I have been sort of wondering this myself lately. Although they are made for displays, I don't see to many around anymore. I still build with CC often, or at least something very close (as my gatehouse shows).

I was just curious as to any responces folks have.

I don't think the CC Standard is dead. It is designed for displays and we still see it used in displays. Sure, not a lot of people use it in web published MOCs but that isn't what it was for.

My 2 cents,
Josh

PS. The Medieval Marketplace Project is dead though. I think I was the last person to build one of those!

The CC standard is simply not great for individual MOCing. The limitations it imposes on you as a builder simply aren't worth it if your not going to display your work publicly at a large event.

Much like the Moonbase modules, I think that the city standard has become a bit stale. That's not to say it isn't a great solution for larger community events like Brickfest. Its just that by conforming to the standard , you limit your building options.

What is exactly this CC standard? Is it Tudor-style houses in the vein of the Blacksmith shop?

I think its the scaling of the MOCs. They have the same standardized height for things like castle walls, civilian building roof-to-ceiling space, and etc. I know this as my giant wall and tower sections were tad bit too big to be placed next to the other Castle MOCs. Heck, standing at four-and-a-half feet tall, it literally would have towered above all other Castle creations during BrickFest 2004.

IIRC.... I never have seen anyone make a CC standard MOC of a non-European building. Lets say there's an Ottoman, Arabic, or maybe even Chinese structure that houses a rich merchant or merchants, or maybe the emissary/ambassador from either of those cultures.

The Classic Castle City standard is a set of standards that allow people to join together in a group display. By building to an agreed upon set of standards, they insure that their creations will fit together. You can read more about the CCC standard here.

It's a nice concept, but I bet some builders feel restrained with building 8,1/3 high walls.

Working within a specific set of constraints can result in significant creativity and innovation, actually. Just look at the contests we have around here, and needless to say "standards" like vignettes and *cough*moonbase*cough* also result in a lot of interesting creations.

(The rules of art also apply to LEGO. For example, poetry wouldn't be poetry if it didn't follow certain conventions. But "LEGO as art" is a whole 'nother discussion. :D)
