Carney's Dinefwr Castle

Post by Jacob C. »

Castle #111 from Carney:

I like the shape of this castle and that plump circular keep.
Not his best work but still good.

The plump keep is nice, but those slopes outside are so regular they don't resemble grass at all...

I think those windows are probably home-made decals. Dr. Carney has often used decals in the past to get more accurate shapes for windows.

I really like the effect he gets by using these bricks:

switching them back and forth to get the textured effect on the angled sides of the keep.

I think they are stickers.

Overall I think this is a quite nice castle, but I agree with Norro about the landscaping.

On a different note I am quite sure I have been to this castle, I have to check out the pics from my trip to Wales...

EDIT: Oops, Bruce beat me...

I, for one, like his use of the green slopes. It probably looks even better in person.

Even though some of the outside walls seem to suffer from the big, grey wall syndrome, it is still a great MOC and representation. 8)

Very cool, yet another great castle by him!

The green, well, I could go either way. There was alot of landscaping done to improve fortifications, so it could be showing that, or maybe he just didn't want to put time in to that part, I dunno.

Rather blah to me. I hate that sloped landscaping; it'd be put to better use on a spaceship than this terrain.

I really like the way he did the windows, and the stairs going down in this picture look awesome too.

A very good castle!

I like how he used a large variety of peices. I agree with what everyone has already said about it. I'm not sure if I like the slopes or not. THey are certainly different.

Looks great to me, the slopes arnt too bad either. It's size is impressive in itself. The one thing that it's missing is minifigs!

The good doctor's castles are Lego recreations of the real deal. If the real castle has big grey walls, then his model has big grey walls. There is usually a lack of "life," figs, fountains, trees, markets, you know life. His building techniques tend to set prescedence, and have changed a great deal.

You know how minifig weapons/gear are out of proportion because the fig is just too wide? Maybe his models have begun to do the same. The brick can't be bent in a hyper realistic way, so they look too square, or not rounded enough. They are realistic, but can never be miniatures in the classic sense. I would like to see him take on other castles that would be more challenging, and push his gargantuan skill (and collection). I coached my employees to show their passion at work. You don't always have to be passionate about something to put your best in it. I think this castle is very like many of his previous builds.

All the same, he can build on a scale just simply beyond the economic scale of most of us. His creations are realistic and his now 2 decades-old project is losing no steam whatsoever. He remains an huge inspiration to me.
