The Perfect Big Grey Wall!!! Losing it's plainess.

Post by Mike Viper »

Yeah, that sums it up. I recieved my very first ever Bricklink Order today. It has gone smoothly, and I built this with some of the pieces I got:

http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/colan ... eywall.jpg

Now, as some of you run away in terror, I gaze in aw. This is a special moment for me in my castle-filled future. This is the very first ever wall I have built using mainly 1x2 bricks. Any previous attempts where a jumble of 1x8's, 2x6's, 2x2's and so on, and it didn't look good. i can finally see and touch a real castle wall.

I am sorry if this seems pointless. I am just too happy for words now, as you can tell because of lack of base or any others. I am hoping for this to be a step into the bricklink world and the larger castle plains.

Thank you, and thanks for your previous suggestions.

(I forgot to get wall-walk plates!  agh  )

Hey, congrats on your first order Mike!
What store did you choose?

The wall looks great to me, definately better than a jumbled wall. (The type I am famous for :P )

Welcome to the Bricklink world! :D

Glad to here that your fiorst order went over smoothly. Oh, and by the way, I, too, just built my first walls using mainly 1x2s :D .

Awesome. I think grey walls are hot...I really dislike the "mottled" look many people try to add in. I think things should be rethought if the wall is too featureless to need mottling. But to each their own!

1x2's are a great look, but they get really flexible over a long distance and height. 2x2's are much stronger, and let you put details on both sides without seeing the backside of headlight bricks, etc, through. 2x4's are what I started with...large, fast, easy to build, but still have a good pattern. 1x2's are definitely my brick of choice.

A suggestion I have is to randomly add in 2x6 or 2x8 bricks if you're adding thickness to the walls. This gives them a defined width, and makes the whole thing a lot stronger. From the outside, it's totally invisible.

Ah, congrats indeed! It is a great thing when one can finally build with bricks of choice. 1x2s are my favorite as they flex a bit to give an uneven look, but 1x4s are also good. Usually if I have a 4-wide wall and am using 1x2s I add some 2x4s in to help strengthen the wall along the way with-out inturrupting the look on the outsides.

I hope you can beef up your 1x2 collection and keep on building!

Thanks Amanda, I chose The Lego Room *Free Ship*. It was in canada, a great store I might add, I payed the raw price, no extra fee.

Congrats Remyth! Feels great, don't it?

J1A3L5: I have the near same thought. Mottling add great effect, but I would mottle light grey against light bley, so the color difference isn't so major. I ordered some dark bley 1x2's in case I mottle. Eventually I will apply different tactics with more orders.

Wunztwice: yeah, I ordered 2x4's to, just to be on the safe side. I probly chose 1x2's because they are the most scaled thing to an actual castle stone, but thats won't limit me to other bricks to!

DARKspawn: Did you mean light bley? That's what these are. I knew how you feel though, before this I had i think 5 2x4's, and 7 1x2's. My greys suffer.

Well, thanks for all the warm thoughts and comments guys! I have another wall fer ya. This one is made again completely from my order, except the men and ladders. I like those lego flowers. They add nice touch, I've never had a lego flower until yesterday, so that's kinda cool.

This time, the new Big Grey Wall is under attack, but the wall.....it has changed!

Sadly, 200 or 250 1x2's and 100 2x4's cannot be enough for a thick wall, just a simple little set, but hey, even my parent's thought it was cool, so that makes me happy. I ordered those heads for ordering. They will find a purpose.

http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/colan ... horde2.jpg

A path cut among the flowers for another siege ladder to be built and deployed. A viking blows his war horn.

One ladder has made it up, one is being assembled, and was knocked down and collapsed. Chaos ensues.

The last pic, one I've always wanted to do and make a comic out of as a view, is the First Person:

http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/colan ... horde5.jpg

watching your buddies climb the long ladder.

Well, tommorow or the day after I hope to post another type of wall. Man, I'm just having to much fun with this! hope you guys like this wall! And perhaps the scene too.

Thanks for the kind words!

I like the new wall better than the old one for 1 reason: it is not as simplistic. I like it when people use their imaginations to make up something completely new.

The scene is really funny, too. I really like the first-person veiw. Also, I think that the red horns are cool. He was using something other than his sword to kill people, me thinks  .

I didn't even realise that it was bley until you mentioned it actually. I am in a fix myself. I have a ton of light grey wall peices but not a great amount of light grey bricks. I was wondering what you guys would advise someone who was just starting to really seriously collect bricks -

which would be the best to start a collection with in this day & age, light grey or bley ?

It's keeping me awake at night ... seriously ;)

Hey Mike. It's looking good. I like the accents you've added. The other wall was ok, but this one sticks out to me more!

The attack looks to be going well, but I can't tell for what side. That's probably a sign of a good action MOC.

As far as which to collect I might say light bley because LEGO will continue to produce it. Grey will get more expensive most likely, but I am a grey fan myself. I think you could probably buy light bley and old dark grey, but agian the prices. So it's more or less up to you and your pocket-book.

Yeah, I think my official collection will consist of bley, but I don't look at that as bad, I think we'll just get used to it.

I like attacks that go about evenly until like the last two guys, that's what I tried to do here.

Heh heh, yup those few viking who used thier horns got to show it. heh.

Expect more first-person shots. I seem to like those two. Once I have enough men and a better cam, I was hoping of making a comic in first-person, placing you as a front-line trooper.

Well, I have made a door-house (theres no gate, just two large brown doors) the scene will consist of a king and his knights once again fighting off barbarians in a last stand. Again, I'm going hollywood. the wall is a prop, because I don't have enough for a back. Man, I can't wait till CCC, I have such an idea for the siege theme....

So the gatehouse will be coming soon.
