hah, great post. signed up just to say perfectly sums up what's been on my mind for the last few months (and to take a shot at that new contest of course). Can't get anything even slightly decent-looking together and even though my Lego supply is far from excessive it should be enough to build up at least an average nifty little castle. In my head I've built tons of pretty things but with bricks in my hands I'm clueless thusfar.
well, guess practice makes perfect so off I go then.

Dont get boged down!! Keep your hopes up. I have a large brick collection, but i started with very little! Like everyone does!! I would sugest the Pick a Brick at Lego.com/shop, you can buy 1000 bricks there for about 80$!!!
