Hey Tony,

This is looking really cool. I assume there is going to ultimately be a lot more white on the ground? Looking forward the the finished display.

If those are the actual white leaf pieces on those trees (and it looks like they are), I think you control most of the world's supply of them. Leave it to Sava to build something bigger than anyone else's MOCs with "spares".

This is a great use for that shade of gray... it would seem that this gray is much better for natural slate/rock than for castles and/or towers. I hadn't thought to use it for that purpose, but seeing your MOC has helped in that way.

This should be a great scene for vikings - water, snow, rock and a dragon... I can't wait to see the final.

I really like the frozen river idea, very creative! The scale is huge, can't wait to see the end product.

extremely cool. as someone already asked, is there going to be more snow on the ground? the effect it gives the trees is fantastic. the cave i nice touch; further, the red dragon really is the best one lego made with the vikings line, isn't it? the armored dragon is a bit too childish and the green one, while it's neat that lego tried to make a bigger one, just ends up looking to silly to be taken quite seriously. they got it nearly perfect with the red one - fearsome enough, proportional, et cetera.

Nothing short of awesome, and this is WIP!
I really like the lanscaping thus far. The trees look a tad large, but if it's going to be followed by many smaller ones, it'll definitely be a treat to behold. Can't wait to see it with minifigs in place!

Well I just logged in to post this picture, but it looks like you beat me to it. :)

I built it specifically for this event, so it's finished the way you see it. I have more pictures of it that I will upload to Brickshelf later tonight. I may take another picture or two if someone wanted a close up of something in particular that I didn't already capture, but otherwise it's slated for demolition.

Sounds great Tony, but I would love to see that bridge up close, even if it is just a "basic" rope bridge! Looks great from here, can't wait for the other pics.

Re: Work in Progress - Winter Waterfall with Vikings

An excellent start.

I love your frozen river. The broken ice is a nice touch and the snow covered trees are fantastic. A couple of suggestions though. The entrance to thet cave is two rectangular. It looks like an exit way for the Batmobile rather than a natural cave. I suggest using a few bricks or inverted slopes to give it an irregular look. Right now it just feels a bit off. I know your putting a dragon out front, but such a change would only sacrifice a few bricks. The rest of the landscaping looks spot-on, so why stop there?

Have you considered doing a mosaic at the two ends where the grey walls are? It could be a very effective way to continue the landscape. By creating a simple mosaic with plates and bricks, you could give the illusion that the scene extends beyond the retaining walls.

Finally, I have no idea about the Viking Fort your going to add, but MAKE IT BIG. A corner of a large fort would look great here. All in all, an most excellent start to a wonderful scene.

Keep building.
I added a few bricks to the mouth of the cave as per yer suggestion, it does look a little better, but I would have had to totally redesign the cave in order to drastically change it.

I thought about doing a mosaic for the walls, but as I said this MOC was built out of spare parts, and I meant it. All I really had to work with were castle wall pieces (I never use them for actual castle walls) and 2x2 bricks in dark grey and light grey. All of my other bricks are being used elsewhere, so I really didn't have any way of doing a nice mosaic for the walls.

As it turns out, LEGO's viking fortress was just big enough, I think. I only had room for a third of the whole set on my mountain!

Thanks for the feedback.

supernova wrote:I personally don't like to comment on WIP stuff, but I guess its a good stage to get feedback :)

Overall, this looks like its going to be a really promising display. The trees are nicely done (saw (you) post them some time ago), and the frozen over lake is a good idea.

Some nitty gritty details:

I personally prefer a slightly less monotonic ground colour, so maybe a little bit of brown/grey/bley together with the black? or more snow here and there to break up the monotonicity.

Also, it looks like the trees are rather tall, so the viking's fortress has to be relatively big so that it doesn't look overshadowed by the trees :)

Last but not least, have (you) considered using trans-clear plates on top of the white to do the frozen-over lake? the effect might be better, and the cost will soar, but it might be really nice :)

But overall, I like it, and I am looking forward to seeing the completed display.
The whole mountain is dark grey, rather than black, but as I said before I didn't have much to work with. However, I think had I added a mottling of light grey, it would have distracted from the mottling of ice/snow I added to the rocks.

The gates of LEGO's viking fortress ended up being almost the same height as the tress, so I think it worked out well.

I thought about trans-clear bricks, but the white *IS* the frozen over lake. The blue in the waterfall is liquid water, as waterfalls rarely actually freeze thoroughly (moving water is harder to freeze than still water).

Thanks for the feedback.
smcginnis wrote:Very very cool. Me wants. I definitely agree with most of what BlueandWhite said, especially that the viking fortress should be huge. A way to do it would be just to unfold a regular one and make it span the corner, maybe enlarged and strengthened a bit, with a central building of some sort.

I love those trees.

Thanks. I added the central building that I had built way back when I redesigned LEGO's viking fortress, I think it worked out well.

Thanks for the reply.

Lord Felix wrote:MAN! I was just saying I needed Dark Grey by the bucket load... And here you are, building a display with "extra" parts!?! That is more dark grey then I will ever have!

Great job. It will look great when it is all the way completed.
Thanks! I got most of the dark grey used in this MOC at one time at Brickfest 2005 from the PaB boxes they were selling. 2,500 old dark grey 2x2s for $90, hard to pass up.

JPinoy wrote:Nice landscaping work! You might wanna using some white bricks for the knee-deep snow.
Thanks. I don't have much in the way of white bricks free, so I had decided early on that this would not be a snow-covered scene, but rather an fall-freeze or spring-thaw MOC, where most of the snow or ice that collected is clinging on the the shadows where the sun hasn't melted it yet. Where it's still cold enough to freeze water, but its nice and sunny. Had I more white I would have piled snow/ice under the trees.
The dark tide wrote:Looks excellent. You don't see many winter MOCs so its a nice refresh.
Thanks!

I love the ice and the river, as well as the caves. When it's finished and populated with minifigs it promises to be excellent. :)

Nah, I know of many people who have ALOT more than me, trust me. That said, I have about twice as many as you see on those trees, I just don't have the trunk pieces to use them all up.

As for spares, I bought a lot of bricks for Ulmaris (the light grey) and the dark grey from brickfest. Ulmaris, after all, uses nearly 6 or 8 times as many bricks as this little diorama.

That's exactly what I was going for, the natural slate/rock style of mountain. I did the same thing with Stonebarrow keep, though I mottled it with green instead of white like I did here.

I hope you liked the final product.

Congrats and keep working.
For a closer picture of the trees, see above. I've gotten the tree building down to a science, I can knock one out in about twenty minutes as long as I have the trunk pieces to work with.

Thanks for the reply.

See above about the snow. I really like the green one as well, especially as made into a hydra as I did. I haven't seen the armored dragon in person yet, so I will hold of judgment on it till I do.

Thanks! I don't have any small white trees built, so there weren't any on the diorama.

This is indeed very awesome now that it is completed—but any chance of some more pics, with a less distracting background? Or is this already dismantled?

Great finish. Did you have any trains in the display?
BTW, the whole camera-in-the-train thing looks pretty darn awesome. Do they do that at Brickfest? If not, you should bring it to them! :D
