I just typed variations of "Europe during the Crusades" until I found one that wasn't old fashioned, nor too detailed.
On an aside ... the Kingdom of Leon was TOO perfect a place for the Lion Knights of King Leo to reside.

I feel That the black Falcons are some what English (of any sort)
