Dragon Masters Explained

Post by Dragonlord Esq. »

I've always thought of the Dragon Masters as being the remnants of the Black Knight empire, sort of like when Rome relied on barbarian tribes to fight for them. The sets always gave me an impression of decentralization somehow, like there was no grand nation to hold the faction together. Basically after so many years of presiding over the former domains of the Black Falcons and the Crusaders the empire became decadent and fell into a state of decline. After a while the empire became so powerless that the wizards were able to take control of local areas and act as warlords. The barbarians who moved into the region during this time co-opted the symbols and acted as the empire's army, although the current Black Monarch had little power to influence them. Anyway, that's my version. Tell me your version, or what you think of mine!

I never really thought of it like that, but I really like it!!! 8) It brings the dirrferent periods togather in a timeline kind of way. Really good Idea!!!!

That is a good version... I hadn't thought of that.

For my version, I have the Black Knights as being the empire of a Black Monarch/Wizard who uses the Dragon Masters for something like a buffer state... kind of like the USSR used the Easter Bloc states. The Dragon Masters live in kind of a rough forest/mountain terrain that seperates them from their rivals, the Crusaders. As such, all the skirmishing, raiding, and etc come from the Dragon Masters, and they are the first to feel the blunt of any attack...

I made them kind of rough around the edges, kind of like barbarians might be - and they aren't the best fighters either. But they act as a good way to hide the Black Monarch's real empire and his crack troops from others. As for the dragons... I took them away from them ;-).

When I think of the Castle line, I usually think of being out of production as being conquered, or simply not existing as a nation anymore. I have a completely different storyline for my army and all my characters, that amazingly has only slightly changed since I was a kid. There are no factions in my army. Different emblems such as the Black Falcons or the Crusaders merely represent different houses in my empire.

With me ... Majisto is a 'subject' of the Black Knights. The Black Monarch is dead, a ghost, actually. (He haunted everybody from the Wolfpack to some of the higher ranking Black Knights, trying to get some revenge for his murder).

The realm is ruled by the Dungeon Master, who was a shady character when Black Monarch was alive. It was he who hired a Wolfpack assassin to sneak into the castle and kill his king.

Anyway, Majisto lives in the mountains and the Dragon Masters are his personal troops, who, like the name implies, handle dragons. They're a lot grittier and less formal / regal than the Black Knights. After all, they live in the mountains, have less supply and handle dragons. They're rustic, by comparison.

Anyway, while the Black Knights are normal soldiers and knights, the Dragon Masters serve as animal handlers, cavalry (dragoons ... hehe), and Majisto's honor guard, all at once. That explains the ornate axes, helms and outfits.

I've got loads of criss-crossing characters too. Ex-Dragon Masters who are Wolfpack, various knights, all sorts. No Medieval Lego theme goes without representative.
