I've thought of this idea in my head, and I thought I'd share what the voices are saying...

How do y'all feel about the second half of the Picture Captioning process (the voting)?

Is it necessary?
Does it serve a meaningful purpose?
Does it bring out better captions?
Would it be missed?

The basic question being... should CC picture captioning continue to have a vote for a single caption, or should we just have fun with it and go with a pure caption environment only?

I do enjoy the fact that picture captioning is a different kind of contest. There's no building involved for the participants, thus enabling those without a camera or sufficient building skill to have a chance to win. Therefore, the voting isn't truly necessary.

However, I also enjoy seeing who's caption the community thinks is best. Without the voting, the caption contest would just be left hanging, IMHO. Because of that, I vote in favor of voting.

Is it necessary?
No.

Does it serve a meaningful purpose?
I think it gives everybody a chance to pick their choice of humor, but as there's no prize, I think it's rather pointless.

Does it bring out better captions?
I can honestly say some of the better captions I've seen have not been in the poll. Who chooses those?

Would it be missed?
Not by me.

That'd be my vote.

I like that the second thread gives us a bit of a look at the funniest captions, but the need to have some input in the selection of THE caption has never been an issue for me.

The best thing about the second thread, at least in ye olde days, was that we got a chance to COMMENT on our favourite factions (which, for the record people, is frowned on or prohibited on the Captioning thread).

Of course, we didn't see much of that this time around, but it HAS been a year or something...

I feel the competitive aspect (voting for faves) ups the level of fun in creating the captions. Having a "top 5 (or 6)" on which we can comment and vote brings closure to the captioning. Sometimes inspiration hits, and it can be recognized (even when someone else gets the top votes).

All in all it's harmless fun, and I would miss the voting if it went away. So, please keep the votes (and I won't sulk if the decision goes the other way :) ).

I like voting. I like being able to comment on pictures.

I'd be a little sad if it were gone. If there is no thread to comment on the captions, I think people will end up cluddering the forum with the captions, not on purpose. In the end, it will just be work for admins to delete the posts.

I agree. I would like the voting to remain.
