For all of you well read peoples who have read Ivanhoe post here.

I'll begin:
Ivanhoe is the very first historical fiction EVER! The prolouge consists of a letter to the Reverend Dryasdust. Scott tells how society has made history dull and dry as dust.
Anyhoo, it's a great story of knights and the like. My favorite character is Wamba. O man! he is so funny. Scott does a very good job of making Wamba a fool, but not in the mental sense. Itseems Wamba did more thinking than all of the characters combine. I also like the Black Knight. He is very cool at being black.

Really? (because) I thought it was written in the middle ages, well after the Epic of Gilgamesh from 22nd century BC in Mesopotamia, or the Greek plays of the 3rd and 4th centuries BC. Hmm, maybe I am wrong about something here.

According to Wikipedia, the first historical novel was in 1814 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_fiction

Also, isn't Beowulf the first historical (I use that term loosely - there is Grendel, after all, though the rest of the story is set in a real time and place and culture) fiction?

Nope, you're right on the money. I've found that English teachers and Profs are usually less knowledgeable about such things than ametuer enthusiasts.

And no, I haven't read Ivanhoe, but shouldn't this forum be about LEGO Castls stories?

As a mod who is sometimes unsure of himself, I wondered the same thing. Ooh... there's so many "mod only" buttons I want to press right now! However, Glencaer posting in this thread as if it was completely normal made me rethink that.


So... Ivanhoe. I have it. I want to read it sometime soon. It comes highly recommended by George RR Martin (my favorite author, who writes some historically detailed fantasy). I hear it has a very good account of a medieval tournament.

Heh heh heh... the same thing happened with me.

I've heard of Ivanhoe since I was a "wee lad", but I have almost forgotten what it was about. I can only remember the basics. Not a bad idea in mentioning it, this would be a good read, although the old english can be a bit of a challenge.

In case anyone is wondering, the author is Sir Walter Scott (in case you want to actually find it somewhere).

My copy is a 1939 edition illustrated by Milo Winter, originally given to my mother by my great grandfather as a christmas present.
