POST 3: BACKGROUND, HISTORY AND LORE

* INTRODUCTION *

Lands of Classic Castle is a MOC-based fantasy world called Roawia which is populated by the members of the Classic Castle forums. The world is broken up into four factions: Garheim in the arctic north, Lenfald in the forests of the northwest, Loreos in the central desert and grasslands, and the Outlaws who are scattered throughout the land, but are more concentrated in the southern mountains and swamps.

Each participant creates a character who will represent them in the game. This character can be anyone; a merchant, a power-hungry baron, or a simple farmer. Once you've decided on your in-game persona, you can build MOCs that help to tell his/her story. You can also build MOCs that will help increase your status in the kingdom as well as your faction's standing. This occurs through various contests and challenges, described further down. Choose your faction wisely, and work together to make yours the most powerful in the land!

* MAP *

We are currently working with this map draft:
Image Image

To read more about maps and the map draft process, see the "lands of classic castle map making" thread.

* FACTIONS *

PROVINCE OF GARHEIM
In the north stand the snow-covered mountain the Garhim call home. It is a desolate and barren home, but to the hard-working and honorable Garhims an easy life is no life at all, and with stone for their castles and fish for their mouths, the land provides everything they need.

Creations in this faction should have an "old nordic" feel to them. Stone is plentiful, but wood is scarce and valuable. Due to their difficult terrain, this faction values speed and manoeuvrability and has a strong focus on light infantry.

- Demonym: Garhim (plural: Garhims).
- Colors (primary/secondary): Dark blue/blue.
- Terrain: Mountainous/harsh/sub-arctic.
- Building style/materials: Small fortifications, stone.
- Natural resources: Stone, metal, fish.
- Economy: Mining, fishing.
- Army: Light infantry.
- Navy: Small vessels.
- LEGO sigils: Black Falcons, Crown Knights.
- Faction Overseer: .

PROVINCE OF LENFALD
Between Garheim and Loreos lies the Province of Lenfald, with its rich grasslands and deep forests. Valuing grace and style, the Lenfels prefer to live, hunt and fight with elegance - often using a longbow for all three.

Lenfald has an excellent supply of wood as well as stone. Their castles are often stone and wood combinations, and they utilize wooden siege weapons as well as large ships. If you want to build in a typical "medieval England" style, Lenfald is your faction.

- Demonym: Lenfel (plural: Lenfels).
- Colors (primary/secondary): Dark green/yellow.
- Terrain: Forest/foothills.
- Building style/materials: Medium sized castles, wood and stone.
- Natural resources: Wood, wildlife.
- Economy: Lumber, hunting.
- Army: Archers, light cavalry.
- Navy: Large war- and tradingships.
- LEGO sigils: Forestmen, Kingdoms Dragons.
- Faction Overseer: .

PROVINCE OF LOREOS
From the arid desert in the west to the grassland in the east, Loreos dominates most of central Roawia. The proud and traditional Loreesi are unrivaled in their ability to harness the power of horses, a tradition passed on and honed to perfection through generations.

Due to the harsh conditions and flat land, castles in Loreos are mostly larger constructions of sandstone and mortar. Creations in this faction should be inspired by real world old Middle East and Southern Europe.

- Demonym: Loreesi (plural: Loreesi).
- Colors (primary/secondary): Red/gold.
- Terrain: Grasslands/desert.
- Building style/materials: Large castles, sandstone.
- Natural resources: Fertile land (some areas).
- Economy: Livestock, horses, agriculture.
- Army: Heavy cavalry.
- Navy: Medium sized ships.
- LEGO sigils: Crusaders, Kingdoms Lions.
- Faction Overseer: .

OUTLAWS
Not a united faction but rather a term for anyone not part of any of the three Provinces, the Outlaws consist on innumerable groups, clans and tribes of thieves, bandits, rebels and other outcasts as well as those openly practicing magic and beings of magic origins. Outlaws are found all over Roawia, but they are said to gather in the unclaimed southern lands, especially the mountain area called The Shade and the Magic Island in the east sea.

The Outlaws' style in building as well as combat varies, somewhat depending on their location. If you want to build fantasy elements like magicians, orcs and dragons, or just a gang of good old fashioned bandits, you should choose this faction.

- Colors (primary/secondary): Black/varied.
- Building style/materials: Crude, varied.
- Natural resources: Varied.
- Economy: Theft, magic.
- Army: Footsoldiers, magic.
- Navy: Varied.
- LEGO sigils: Wolfpack, Fright Knights, Skeletons, Trolls, or any other unassigned faction sigil.
- Faction Overseer: .

THE KING'S COUNCIL
The King is a non-player character who will provide a central authority in-game by which challenges and contests are issued. The King and his council are not controlled by any one person, but rather a delegation of representatives from each faction, who together will come up with contests, challenges, and major storyline developments. This faction is not open for builders.

- Area: Unknown
- LEGO sigil: Royal Knights.

* BUILDING *

OFFICIAL LEGO FACTIONS AND SIGILS
The use of official LEGO factions is all about sigils. For example, Kingdoms Lions are assigned to Loreos. This means all LEGO pieces (usually torsos and shields) with the Kingdoms Lions sigil (a lion) belong to Loreos. You do not have to use the official Kingdoms Lions (in fact, making up your own figures is encouraged), and a Kingdoms Lion piece without the sigil (like the gray chainmail torso) can be used for any faction.

Not all your figures have to carry an official sigil either; you can create custom sigils or leave your men without a sigil alltogether. The important thing here is to color-coordinate: Mix and match parts to fit the colors of your faction.

"Protected" official LEGO factions are: Black Falcons (Garheim), Crown Knights (Garheim), Forestmen (Lenfald), Kingdoms Dragons (Lenfald), Crusaders (Loreos), Kingdoms Lions (Loreos), Royal Knights (King's Council).

BANNERS
Each faction has two colors which are to be displayed in your MOCs, signifying your alliance to your faction. These colors can be displayed in multiple ways, either on a basic flagstaff (on the left) or on a faction standard (on the right). Displaying both colors is highly preferable, but if you do not own both, or if your MOC does not easily accomodate either a double flag or the official standard, you may fly a single flag on a standard flagpole.

Note: Faction colors has to be the exact colors listed in the faction summaries. If you are unsure about banner colors, here are some example banners:
Garheim, Lenfald, Loreos, Outlaws (for Outlaws the secondary color (gold in this picture) can be anything).

BUILDING IN YOUR FACTION
Building within your faction is strongly encouraged, but not required. Everyone will want to build something different than their faction style, on occasion, and this is encouraged as long as you try to tie the MOC to your character in some way. Examples could include "scouts in enemy territory", "attending a celebration in another land", or "embarking on a quest far from home". The main idea is to have fun with your MOCs, but try to contribute to your Faction's story at the same time.

* ADMINISTRATIVE ROLES *

FACTION OVERSEER (FO)
An FO is basically a faction administrator. FOs will get together periodically to discuss game development and host global contests through which the storyline is progressed. Working with their fellow FOs ensures that a cohesive vision is implemented in the development of the project. Individually, FOs host regional contests of their own choosing. Other members of the faction may also host contests or challenges with permission from the FO.

Faction Overseers are chosen by the faction members. Being an FO involves a lot of work and will take a lot of your time - make sure you know what you are getting into before applying to be an FO.

FACTION LIAISON (FL)
A Faction Liaison is an assistant to the FO. Faction Overseers can task their FLs with keeping track of scoring, hosting a challenge, or other related tasks. The Faction Liaison is chosen by the Faction Overseer.

GUILD MASTER
The Guild Master is in charge of guilds, keeping track of entries, ranks and titles.

* SCORING AND STATUS POINTS *

There are two scoring systems in LCC: Global and personal.

GLOBAL STATUS POINTS
Global status points are applied to your faction as a result of member participation in global building challenges. This scoring is used to build up your faction's status in Roawia.

PERSONAL STATUS POINTS
Personal status points are how you'll gain titles and status within your faction. You'll gain personal status by participating in global challenges, local challenges, and guild challenges.

GLOBAL CHALLENGES
Faction Overseers will communicate on a regular basis to come up with a global building challenge approximately once every other month. These contests normally should progress the storyline of the LCC in some way, but are not required to do so.

Each member of a faction will be allowed to submit one entry, which will score participation points for his/her region and for him-/herself, assuming any/all qualifying criteria are met. Depending on participation, the top 2-3 entries from each region will be selected by the Faction Overseer of that region for submission into the final round of judging. Once selected, the finalists will be placed into a public poll on the main CC forum for a community vote. Anyone can vote, even those who are not active in LCC. The overall winner will score bonus points for him-/herself and for his/her faction.

LOCAL CHALLENGES
Up to two times per month, the Faction Overseer can arrange a challenge for his faction. Local challenges will not progress the overall storyline of the game. Keeping track of scoring is ultimately the responsibility of the Overseers, but they can enlist someone to help them keep track of it if they wish. With the permission of the FO, the responsibility of hosting and judging a local challenge may be turned over to a member. The host of a local challenge may build an entry, but is not eligible to win.

FREE BUILDS
All members are allowed up to two free builds per month.

Master build - - 5 - [2]
[1]: Each faction has 4 entry points (per entrant) and 12 victory points available for distribution across 1-4 local challenges each month. Distribution should mirror the size of the challenge. The following contest types are available (all challenges must have a 1:3 entry to victory point ratio):

SMALL challenge: 1 point for entering, 3 points for the winner.
MEDIUM challenge: 2 points for entering, 6 points for the winner.
LARGE challenge: 3 points for entering, 9 points for the winner.
HUGE challenge: 4 points for entering, 12 points for the winner.

This makes the following combinations possible for each month:
- 1 huge (4/12)
- 1 large + 1 small (3/9 + 1/3)
- 2 medium (2/6 + 2/6)
- 1 medium + 2 small (2/6 + 1/3 + 1/3)
- 4 small (1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3)

[2]: Special limitations apply to Guild builds, see the Guild Hall thread.

* HONORARY TITLES *

Building up your personal status score will earn you a new title which can be displayed in your CC signature block. The titles do not currently grant you any in-game power, but are a sign of prestige in your faction. Once you have reached a certain rank, you may display it in your forum signature using one of these banners. (Trouble displaying banners? See the FAQ below.)

"Peasant" - Score of less than 15
"Citizen" - Score from 15-49
"Militia" - Score from 50-99
"Freeman" - Score from 100-149
"Soldier" - Score from 150-199
"Captain" - Score from 200-249
"Knight" - Score from 250-299
"Noble" - Score from 300-399
"Baron" - Score from 400-499
"Prince" - Score from 500-599
"Heir" - Score from 600+

* GUILDS *

Guilds are exclusive clubs by which you'll gain entrance by completing a specific set of tasks. Once you gain membership, you are permitted to display guild heraldry in your MOCs. There are three ranks within each guild: Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master. You will increase in rank as you complete the tasks necessary to gain enough experience to progress.

Note: You may only be active in TWO guilds in a time that you have not achieved a rank of "Master" in. For example, you can start out in the Heroes and Masons guilds, but you cannot start to qualify for either of the two remaining guilds until you have reached the rank of "Master" in either the Heroes or Masons guild.

The guilds are: Heroes Guild, Masons Guild, Merchants Guild, Mages Guild.

Read more about Guilds in the guild thread.

* CHARACTER INTRODUCTION CHALLENGE *

When you are ready to join LCC and have (after giving it a lot of thought) figured out which faction you want to join as well as who your character is going to be, the first thing you should do is create an entry for the Character Introduction Challenge. This is where you introduce your character with a MOC and a description of who he/she is. You are not officially a part of LCC (and not eligble for points in other contests and challenges) until you have completed the CIC. This challenge is ever-going - it does not have a deadline - and completing it will earn you 5 personal points.

* FAQ *

I ALREADY SIGNED UP; CAN I CREATE A NEW CHARACTER?
You can only have one active character at a time. If you want to create a new character to replace the one you already have, you can, but:
- your new character must be in the same faction as your old one.
- your old character dies. Feel free to end his story in a MOC.
- your personal score points are lost, your new character starts at 0 personal points (faction points are not affected).
- you can only switch once every four months.

CAN MY EXISTING CHARACTER CHANGE FACTION?
For now, no.

CAN I GIVE MY CHARACTER A TITLE?
Yes, but avoid titles that would single out your character as a person of extreme importance. For example, you can be a Lord, a Duke, or a Knight - but not a Prince, a King, an Emperor and so on.

DO I HAVE TO FINISH THE CHARACTER INTRODUCTION CHALLENGE?
Yes, the CIC is obligatory - you are not officially a part of LCC and not eligible for points until you have finished the CIC.

DO BANNERS HAVE TO BE SPECIFIC COLORS?
Yes, your banners should be the exact color(s) listed for each faction. The primary colors have been selected because they are or recently have been available in sets and are inexpensive on BrickLink. (Note: The inclusion of the secondary color is optional). For a list of available colors, see 4495 Flag 4 x 1 Wave.

DO BANNERS HAVE TO BE SPECIFIC PIECES?
No. The standard banners use 4495 Flag 4 x 1 Wave, but other flags or brick-built banners are also acceptable as long as they are the correct colors.

MY HONORARY TITLE BANNER ISN'T VISIBLE
Some people have been having trouble with their honorary title banners not showing up. This is a forum issue: Make sure you have BB code enabled for signatures (User Control Panel -> Profile -> Edit signature -> Uncheck "Disable BB code"), which is separate from enabling BB code for posts (User Control Panel -> Board Preferences -> Edit posting defaults -> Check "Enable BBCode by default").

CAN I USE A NAME FROM [FAVORITE FANTASY INFLUENCE]?
We've seen a few creations where names and descriptions seem to be ripped almost straight out of various fantasy stories, especially the A Song of Ice and Fire series. We're all influenced by various material, which is great, but please put the effort in to at least make up your own character and location names. We don't want LCC to turn into A Skyrim of Ice and Rings.

MY STUPID &$#&@ FACTION OVERSEER/LIAISON HAS MY SCORE WRONG! Oh Noez!! WHAT DO I DO?
The best way to resolve any scoring issue is to first compile your list of MOCs and how many points you were supposed to get for each. You can then PM that list to your FO/FL and they'll be happy to look at it and make any corrections, if necessary.

Here is the official lore of Roawia (by Koffiemoc). The history of which the game will be based on, and the story progressed from.
Stay tuned for future developments!
Once, long ago, there lived a king by the name of Alphundus. He was a direct descendant of Roawan the First, who was the very first king of these lands that were named after him. The line of kings had never been broken and Alphundus was proud of that. He himself had a daughter with his first wife. And after she died, he remarried and his second wife gave him three sons.

The children were alike their father. True knights, high-spirited, brave and good in combat. Tough Garmen was even taller than his brothers. Grave Lenard had arms like tree trunks because of his work in the shipyards. Swift Lorean was an athletic, for he liked to run and ride on horseback. All had the brown eyes of their mother. Except for the princess. She was much more like her own mother, slender and sinewy, and green-eyed. She didn't like jousts, nor other royal duties. She wandered the woods instead, speaking with travellers, hags and even centaurs and elves.

Times grew troublesome. It happened often now that the king had to ride out to set matters straight. The queen accompanied him, but his children not. They stayed safe at the royal keep. But left alone, the brothers started to argue. They gathered followers and agitated against each other and especially against their half-sister. She was, being the oldest, the legal succesor to the throne. But rumours spread that she was not the kings daughter, that never in history a woman had held the throne, that she was weird, that she was a witch. Though she was truly her fathers child and wielded the sword better than any of her brothers, the three factions together were too strong.

On the morning before winter solstice she had disappeared. Lorean said she must have been murdered. Garmen suggested she had fled away and got lost in the snow and ice. And Lenard argued she might have gone to the isle of mages, to seek allies. The king said nothing and ordered an investigation. The uncertainty and mistrust grew during a week. Then, at sundown, king Alphundus was found dead. He was stabbed with a blade, the dried blood had blackened.

The three brothers all accused each other of murder and the absent princess was prime suspect too. Weapons were drawn, friends and faithful came to aid and they fought all night. At the end they withdrew, wounded, each in his own favorite territory. Garmen went to the northern mountains, where he knew richess and steel could be found in the mines. He named them Garheim. Lenard took off to the western forest lands he called Lenfald, where hunting game was abundant, and wood to build ships. And Lorean felt home on the southern grassy plains, between his horses. He named it Loreos. They didn't dare to crown themself king yet. But they did all they could to clear any trace of their half-sister, and to destroy anything that smelled like magic.

Eight months after the quarrel news came from their mother. She had given birth to a fourth son. The three oldest did not want to give in to each other and certainly not to a fourth. But neither could they neglect the newborn completely. They decided that he could be king, but in name only. He would have no rights on any land. He could perform ceremonial tasks, and act as a judge, though he could not make laws.

And now, eleven generations later, Roawia is still divided in three, though it has one king. The line of ancestry is broken for good, for the current king is the great-great-grandson of a steward. The story of the brothers lives on in the lands that are named after them. The name of the sister is forgotten now. Strange creatures only live in folklore tales and magic has vanished. Some whisper it's still strong on the isle of springwells. But no-one knows if that is real, for few have dared to go there. None returned.

If all of these factions are under one king and are provinces in the same kingdom, why would they go to war? I can't imagine the King standing for that.

I'd like to give this a shot, but if I don't enjoy it, I am not obligated to continue, right? Do I have to participate in every contest? When can I choose what to make from my own imagination and not from a contest catagory? Does that earn me points?

Well, that's a part of the storyline that we felt the community might like to set the stage for in the lore contest :)

2: no, only the ones you want to
3: when ever you like :)

The way they do it on EB is that free builds are scored separately to help the guild out each month (although, if I understand right, they are a bit behind in grading free builds at the moment.) That could be a pretty good way to encourage free builds here too. Honestly some of the free builds over there have basically built the world and have been very promising.

An alternative here - since there is the prestige system - would be perhaps granting 1 or 2 prestige points (maybe one faction point too) for free builds and limit them to two a month. That way the prolific builders can get rewarded, but not too much that the others can't keep up.

EDIT: one thing I forgot to ask - if I were to be in the outlaw faction... could some of my MOCS be attacking other "outlaws" not other builders, but NPC outlaws? I am thinking of creating an anti-magic order (ala Knights Templar or if you are a Wheel of Time fan, the Children of the Light) that has made its home in outlaw territory for the simple t reason of eliminating magic throughout the world.

EDIT 2: Ok, So, something that should be in the FAQ or that I missed - how / where are we posting MOCs? I assume in the MOC forum? Should we have a conventional naming apparatus such as " LLC - FACTION - TITLE" ie: "LCC - OUTLAWS - The burning of a Witch" ?

This is a good idea, and one we discussed a little bit amongst the development team. Not sure if this is what you meant, but we would probably limit the amount of scoring you could get per month for independent builds, as opposed to limiting the number of actual builds themselves. We can certainly take some community input on the subject :)

This is a REALLY interesting idea! I wonder though if, instead of belonging to the "outlaws" and fighting other outlaws, what if you figured out a way to make your Templars belong to one of the other established factions? Something to think about at least.

This is a good point. I think your suggestion for a naming scheme is perfect. We'll have Wobnam add to his general info post to incorporate this.
As for where to post your MOCs, your first challenge, creating a character, can be posted in this thread. After we get enough people signed up, each faction will get their own "stickied" thread, and you can preferably post your MOC both in your faction thread here in Stories, and also in the Castle MOC forum.

I did indeed mean scoring... Too much grading papers for me this evening... can't even write correctly myself now.

As for my "group" I was thinking who they could join, but I kind of saw them as a force working outside the law of a King - much like the Knights Templars while in the Holy Land. The idea just didn't seem to "fit" in the other factions. Although I was thinking about building chapter houses in the other faction territories as recruiting and "confessor" bases.

So basically you have already decided the kingdom names, definied their limits and set the tone for what the lore should be. So doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a lore competition if you guys have already done all that?

Also as has already been mentioned you have stopped any possibility of warring factions by having a king of no province rule over all

No if there is going to be a lore competition, them we can setup a bigger backstory based on the factes that has been give to us. Example all the factions maybe are at war because the ruling king is a temperary ruler, because the real King is in prison, dead or in hiding etc. (there were on some topic discussion about overthrowing a NPC king) And the factions battle of the throne, all are somewhat loyal to it. But in fact one faction wants it for one self, another are really true to the real King and its heir just working their plan how to put the king on the throne. And maybe a new faction will rise from lets say the outlaws, like if outlaw group gets strong enough, it has many members that wear the same colors and arms and are succsesful in contests, they can have a area and became one of the official factions (but this is when this project has many members and there have to be some good explanation and will strenght to build up a official faction etc. This is just my ideas to make the lore. I think we will get good answers to these questions :)

Example all the factions maybe are at war because the ruling king is a temperary ruler, because the real King is in prison, dead or in hiding etc. And the factions battle of the throne, all are somewhat loyal to it. But in fact one faction wants it for one self, another are really true to the real King and its heir just working their plan how to put the king on the throne. etc. This is someway to make the lore. :)
Ah i see 8) Still I can see huge problem of having a king at all though. I just don't see why it is needed and it copies guilds of hisotorica too much IMO

Yea and copying that is something we don't wanna do :)
And the King can be like a temperary king that way too that he rules just in the start of this project makes building it up with the faction leaders and Then gives away his powers.
And if he don't he will be forced down from the throne by sword :D
