Top Ten Medieval RTS Games.

Post by friskywhiskers »

Edit:

I have decided to conduct a poll to see what people think are the best purely medieval RTS games. Please reply with the name of the game(s) that you would like to see on such a poll. I will take these nominations and create the poll once there are at least Ten. Then maybe we can use it to compile a top ten list that would be stickied as a resource for those looking to buy an RTS game.

So Far the list contains:

1. Age of Empires II: Age of Kings
2. The Stronghold Series
3. Medieval: Total War I & II
4. Knights of Honor
5. Settlers Series

I've really only played AoE extensively, but I love it. Especially AoE2 - "Age of Kings"

All hail AoE II (Though the expansion 'The Conquerors' is better in my opinion), it comes out on top of my list of RTS games as well, and I've played quite a few. Other RTS'es I've enjoyed include Warcraft III (more fantasy than technically medieval, though) and Medieval II: Total War.

AOE II is great! But, as you said, the expansion is way better! :D Medieval II total war is a awesome game too! :)

For whatever reason, I think I've only played AoE II. I tend to prefer turn based games like Lords of the Realm 2 (it does have RTS elements) and Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3 (which is fantasy, but they both have knight factions).

If you're into turn based stuff, check out the Total War series (Medieval II primarily) and Civlization V. On another note, that's one of my favourite (partially medieval) games as well.

Wow, we'd almost have to have a game one day with all these AoE II players around, what do you think?

Hmm Civ V is indeed fantastic, but it's really only medieval for a small duration of the game. After that it's all nukes and tanks :P . In regards to a multiplayer Aoe 2 game, I'd like that! only I'm afraid that I'd get creamed!

Anyway, Maybe I should attach a poll to this to find out what people think are the top ten, and maybe we can get this stickied as a resource for those looking to buy a good Medieval RTS. How does that sound?

Sounds like a fine idea, for purely medieval (non-fantasy) games, my suggestions to the poll are:
AoE II (+ TC, of course)
M2:TW (+ Kingdoms (expansion))

I'll ad those then. Note that the First Post is edited with a list of Ideas for the poll.

Question;

If you list the Stronghold series, should you list Medieval: Total War as a series as the origninal was also excellent?

I'm keen to see how this develops as I'm not sure how many titles exist in this genre. I remember giving the original Stongholds a crack but for some reason I never got hooked and I haven't tried anything else other than the two Total War games. Just started learning how to play MTW2 a few weekends ago as I now have a machine good enough to play it :)

Ah, good point! I must have missed that. Revising the List now!

Not to be picky, but if this list was for realistic medieval games, I somehow doubt that WC3 with its dragons and undead, while a great game in itself, deserves a place on the list

Well, yes. I guess I don't differentiate between the two. The Spanish cannon galleons were practically unstoppable in the expansion. It would be fun to get an AoE II party going sometime between us forum members. I haven't played in forever but recently got it set up on my laptop, so I'm game :)

Sounds like a plan, but who would host the game? What time would be suitable for all who want to play? Maybe we could have a tournament of some sort! This is kinda off topic from what I'm trying to accomplish with this thread though, so maybe someone should start a new thread with a Discussion/Signup.
