Being of the ingenious sort, Ted Thug devised a plan to locate the missing sword so that he may claim it for his own. The way Ted figured it, someone out there knew the location of the sword, they were just too scared to get it. He figured with a little bit of persuasion, and a whole lot of alcohol, he could convince someone to tell him where it was at. So, Ted went to a tavern in the capital city in the Shade and started buying drinks for everyone and asking about the sword. A few people threw some ideas out there at first, but Ted wasn't convinced. As the tap flowed and more and more patrons showed up to tell Ted where they thought the sword was, the stories of it's hidden location grew wilder and wilder. Finally, someone shouted out "It'sh under hish bed!"

Image

"Whose bed?" Ted replied.

"The kingsh bed. The old duke hid it there long ago."

Ted thought to himself for a minute, then it all made perfect sense. Of course! Nobody every looks under their bed. At least Ted can't remember the last time he did anyway. Ted couldn't believe it was so simple, yet so clever. The sword was hidden within arms reach of the king, but he would never even know it. Ted was impressed with the cleverness of the old duke. With his new found knowledge (and leaving behind his many inebriated new friends), Ted set out to travel to the king's castle to have a look under his bed.

After travelling many days, Ted manages to sneak into the king's castle and slip into his bed chamber late at night. Crawling under the bed, sure enough Ted discovers an old sword. Scrambling out from under the bed, Ted is sure he has completed his quest.

Lord Kellen has always been a Karlamac sword enthusiast. Over the years he has collected all he could on the subject matter. But, now that the official proclamation has been made by the King he knows it is time to act. Armed with new information from some of his Lendfeld informants he plans to make an incursion into enemy territory.

He planned for some time, consulting with a select few he narrowed the position of the sword to the heart of Lendfeld, the Dragonscale Mountains. A small group and himself will quietly make their way to mountain range and attempt to locate the crypt of Duke Wirklich Nervig, the location of Karlamac's magical sword.

Within a week they traveled north from the Stout estates of East Stowburn to Durrough and followed the Aines east where they cut up along the Dragansruth north all the way to Dragonsmouth. Another couple of days of hard travel through the mountains led them to where they believed the resting place of Duke Wirklich Nervig. No one actually knows what Karlamac sword looks like, but Kellen believes he would know when he saw it.

And then as they entered the tomb he saw it, a great effigy of Wirklich Nervig vanquishing the last of the dragons, and in his hand was the sword Karlamac!

Upon hearing the kings quest, Athalus set out to the Garheim capital of Mikithdar to visit it's famous library, a likely place to find clues about the swords location.
Image

He soon found out that Duke Wirklich Nervig of Lenfald, the last one to wield the sword, made a journey to Garheim, a couple of years before his death. One line particularly caught his attention: during his stay, Duke Wirklich lead a small expedition northwards, to visit the Hot Springs. Upon his return, the Duke told that these natural wonders had made a great impression on him, and relieved him of a great burden. Could it be a hint?
Luck was on Athalus' side: he found a small book, which was written by some unknown nobleman. He claimed to have taken part Lord Wirklichs expedition, and wrote that 'A great treasure' was left at one of the most northern springs.

Athalus gathered a couple of his finest men and set out northwards, following the footsteps of Lord Wirklich. After a couple days they reached the first springs, but it took them another week to reach their destination. They felt the heat long before they found the spring itself, hidden in a small ravine. It was a small ravine, filled with many brightly blooming plants, which could only grow so far north because of the heat of the spring. The small expedition, however, paid little attention to this. They could only stare at the great sword, which was placed in the middle of the small spring.

Here is my entry to the Global Challenge...

First MOC...

LCC-GC2-Part 1-The Vow of Silence by Fireglade, on Flickr

Hopefully this story will come later. I wanted to enter this entry before the deadline passed so I do not have a story for this MOC at this point of time.
Basically my character found a hint that points him to a monk who took a vow of silence after killing a man. He is said to have a clue to the whereabouts of the mythical sword of Karlamac. This is Brother Henry giving me a map as to the whereabouts of the sword.

Second MOC...

LCC-GC2-Part 2-The Finding of the Sword by Fireglade, on Flickr

I was in the wandering woods. The map that Brother Henry gave me led to an obscure place in the wandering woods. Because I had lived in these woods I understood the dangers, and how to navigate through it without becoming lost. I could only imagine the difficulty that Wirklich must have faced traversing the same path. On the 6th day of traversing through the forest I came to a stream and heard the rushing of water. I glanced at the map again, I was close…very close.
I followed the river for a few more moments until I found the waterfall. The water flowed quickly here, and the rocks were slick. I squinted toward the falls for a moment in the noonday sun, then a glimmer caught my eye. The sword of Karlamac was so close to me. Then my heart sank as I examined how I would get to it. It was on a rock outcropping on the waterfall. The only way to get to it would be walked through the rushing water to it. I smiled as I thought “Magic makes this task easy. I waved my hand over the water and chanted some words of ages long ago. As blue fire spread from my hands then I tossed the fire onto the water. Instead of freezing the water like it was supposed to do, sparks flew off of the water and my magic had no effect. After trying a couple more spells I realized that magic was not going to affect this challenge. I then decided to test the water. 3 steps in and my feet were already numb with cold. I quickly got out of the water to warm myself before I tried the actual attempt.
After camping out for a night on the shore, well rested and warm enough, I decided to get the sword or possibly die trying. I stepped into the water and started to walk. Sure enough after a few steps my feet were like lead and it was difficult to feel the rocks beneath my feet. Suddenly a my foot slipped and I started moving toward my death. Swimming to the middle of the river for the best chance to get the sword, my whole body started to sink with the numbness spreading to my limbs from the cold mountain water. My fingers finally hit a rock and I grabbed hold of it for dear life as I caught my breath still freezing. I calculated the waters path and where the sword was closed my eyes and let go. I opened them a moment and made one final attempt to grab the rock. Hauling myself onto the rock, took all my reserve strength. As I landed there and felt the burden of the water leave me. I looked at the sword. It was of golden color and it shone in the bright sun slowly setting. I kneeled and picked up the sword…breathless from my ordeal to reach it.

Terrific Contest!!!

Chip Oakenbrow had decided it was time to leave his home and take part in the epic search for the sword of Karlamac. So, he packed his things and took off through the forest with the agility of a deer. Ever since he was little, Chip's grandfather used to tell him stories of how there was a secret clue hidden at the very heart of the Forest, which would lead the finder to the lost sword of Karlamac. When Chip arrived at the dark, seldom-trodden center of the forest, he began to become discouraged, for he did not see anything that resembled a clue. Just then, he came upon a small pool of clear water, and from the center of the pool rose a small statue. Chip gasped when he saw what was standing atop this stone structure. It was a forest fairy! Chip had heard tales of them when he was a child, but he had never thought that they actually existed. Slowly Chip approached the small creature, and abruptly it took off into the sky, leaving behind it a trail of glowing sparks. Now all Chip had to do was follow the fairy, and it would lead him to the sword.

The fairy lead Chip deep into the heart of the Forest, farther then he had ever gone. Suddenly a small clearing opened up, and at the center of this clearing stood a stone pedestal. Mounted on this stone pedestal was a great wooden statue of a Forestmen, and in the statue's hand was held a great and powerful sword; it was the great sword of Karlamac.

Squeeking this one in I know, but here's my entry!

These are the words of Robert of Felwood describing the year of the great search.

Three days ago I received a summons from my former masters at the College of Magic. The message was brief giving me no information as to the reason for my returning to the school. Upon my arrival I was shown to the private chambers of Algernon, one of my favorite teachers. He was with another teacher Oryn who spent most of my schooling launching me around the practice room in mock combat. Both are extremely powerful and both looked especially grave.
Oryn started “Robert, it has come to our attention that the lords and heros of Roawia are abroad and searching for something. We fear it is the Sword of Karlamac.”
This meant nothing to me, but Algernon filled in the blanks. “You may not be familiar with this weapon, Rob, but it is no ordinary weapon. It will give any bearer with the will to wield it the ability to crush whomever he chooses. If the weapon is found, no kingdom, or band outlaws for that matter, will last long.
Oryn stepped in again at this point “We are sending the experienced and powerful mages that we know of to search for the weapon. There have been several rumors that it may have been hidden with the dwarfs that originally resided in the north. We want you to follow up on this lead.”

…and so I found myself searching for dwarfs. I had heard that several bands of exiled dwarfs had been seen roaming the western regions of the unclaimed lands. As dwarfs are not known for their stealth it was not long before I found a group. Among them was an ancient dwarf who had heard of the sword but did not know of its resting place. The best he could do was tell me where to look. Deep within the ancient northern dwarf kingdom there is a chamber within the halls of lore. The Chamber of Scrolls, one of these scrolls may hold the answers I seek.

After many travels I came to the old dwarf kingdom and entered the hall of lore. Where most of the dwarf halls and even the hall of lore had clearly been looted, the Chamber of Scrolls showed little damage. Only a few gems had been pried from the columns. When I entered, the torches along the wall ignited themselves, a remnant of the old magic that lay heavily on the room.

Image

Many of the scrolls were damaged or missing, but in my search I stumbled upon one that had the information I sought:

Image

“…and the sword of the human king will lie where it was forged, in the Room of the Anvil.”

The reference was not very helpful, but it seemed to suggest that the room was a familiar thing to the dwarfs.

Searching deep beneath the mountain roots I spent many days roaming, hoping to find the Room. At last, when I had descended the last stair I found a small chamber with the dull glow of a forge and waves of heat coming through the door. When I entered, there could be little doubt that I had found the Room of the Anvil. Indeed it could be nothing else.

Image

Image

The sword was not guarded. No enchantments or curses protected it. I found this strange until I remembered the words of the ancient dwarf who had guided me to the Chamber of Scrolls. He had said “…the sword is lost in the minds of dwarfs and men. Men wisely gave it up for fear of its power and the dwarfs forgot about it through fear of madness.”

Surely the dwarf lords had tried to wield it for its power, but had not had the will or the purity of thought to wield it without being corrupted. Now I had found it. The question I now face is what to do with it?
