LEGO Dimensions annouced

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

LEGO has been teasing this on twitter, and some leaks came out a few days ago, but yesterday they announced LEGO Dimensions (see the official announcement on Brickset and the new website on lego.com.

I haven't read everything, and I'm not a gamer, but it looks like this is like Skylanders or that Disney Infinity game, where you get a little model - e.g. this
Image
and put it on a electronic thingy, e.g. [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/tormentalous/16880895227/in/set-72157649529408293]this

and then that model becomes part of the game world. You can buy additional pieces that bring different characters or vehicles into the game world.

Some points and questions:
-I do not know if those models are solid plastic, glued together LEGO, or actual LEGO pieces you can take apart.
-Interesting mix of themes - LEGO movie, Batman/other DC heroes, Lord of the Rings, Back to the Future, Ninjago, and ... Wizard of Oz?????? I'll start another thread in General LEGO on that question
-From the released screencaps I assume these figs all mix and match in various worlds. E.g. this pic shows Marty McFly and Gollum in Oz.
Image
-Does this mean that the Collectible Minifig game is no more? It seems that this is essentially a souped-up version of that. Will these compete with each other? Or will one or the other die? If the CMF game dies, will CMFs come down in price? It seemed that the increase in price was part of the monetization of that game.
-What, if any, other themes will come into this game? I saw a comment that we probably won't get either Marvel or Disney themes in this because this directly competes with Disney Infinity. Surely all non-licensed themes are potentials, so we could get pirates or general castle guys.

Anyway, what are your thoughts? Are you excited? Disappointed? Feeling meh? Looks like it releases on September 29.

I'm not sure if I agree that "all" non-licensed themes are potential candidates - the only two I particularly noted were The Lego Movie and Ninjago, both of which have a heavy entertainment side. If Legends of Chima wasn't ending (as I heard it was), I would think that might make it in, but I don't think we'll be seeing any other classic Yellow guys except, perhaps, under the banner of The Lego Movie - and its sequels, if this project lasts that long.

As for the game itself, I'm waffling as to whether I'm going to pick it up, though I'm definitely in for the Back to the Future pack and maybe one or two of the others, depending on the prices and availability. The Gimli one, for example, seems to have some differences from the "standard" Gimli, and if so I'll probably end up grabbing one of those (assuming, which I don't think is unreasonable, that these are in fact compatible with regular LEGO sets).

Now for the fun part - speculating about other themes! As I mentioned in the other thread, I think there a strong probability that the Doctor Who set will, when announced, cross over into this project. A close look at the box art (specifically the bubble in the upper right) suggests the same for Scooby-Do. The use of what I think is a PKE meter in the trailer alludes to the Ghostbusters set, and I've seen others claiming seeing allusions to the Simpsons and Jurassic Park in the background - either of which wouldn't be unlikely, given their current or upcoming set presence. Star Wars and Marvel are conspicuous by their absence, which lends credence to the thought that Disney is probably disallowing anything they own that might conflict with Infinites, which also rules out Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lone Ranger, and probably Indiana Jones. On the other hand, it would be super funny if the "Bad Dude [who] wears a helmet" ended up being Darth Vader, but I suspect the Big Bad for the game is going to end up being homegrown.

The helmet must be conditional.

Anyway, that picture comes from a Flickr set from one tormentalus, which has not only a bunch of screenshots, but also shots of the expansion packs.

Great Scott, this is heavy.

Hey guys,

A lot of stuff has shown up online in the last 24 hours. Apparently LEGO posted instructions to the Dimensions packs online, but it seems they've taken them down now (fair game for discussion based on our site policies). Lots of stuff and pictures can be found here:
Brickfan
Brickset 1
Brickset 2
Follow those for tons more information, but here are some of the key points IMO:

-Further existing/upcoming licenses added to Dimensions - Simpsons, Wonder Woman (maybe later other non-Batman DC heroes?), Jurassic World, Scooby Doo
-More Ninjago sets, also more LEGO Movie sets
-Dr Who (Peter Capaldi)
-Portal 2! Hint of upcoming sets? I'll start a separate thread on this -edit- here is that thread
-The figs definitely, and presumably the little cars etc, are buildable rather than being glued or molded hunks of plastic
-It seems there will be three types of expansion packs:
--The little two piece sets will just be characters and vehicles you can import into the existing Dimensions worlds.
--The three piece sets are 'Level Packs', where you unlock new worlds your characters can explore and conquer (Simpsons, Back to the Future, Doctor Who, Portal 2) (Hmm, will this last essentially be a LEGO version of the original game?)
--The four piece sets are 'Team Packs'. I haven't seen discussion of these yet, but presumably they will be for linking play together with other people (maybe online?).

BTW, my favorite bit so far is the micro Mystery Machine from the Scooby Team Pack.

This Lego Dimensions thing almost makes me want to buy some platform where I will be able to play this game.

Almost.

Either way, it's a great way to get some otherwise unattainable things, and hey, cute little models and DOCTOR WHO!

I've just discovered that that there's a Wikipedia article about the game, and it's got a couple neat tidbits. First, the Doctor character regenerates when you die. :) Secondly, the existence of this Cyberman/Dalek Fun Pack. Not to mention the Doc Brown/Time Train one. :D
