“What are they?” he shuddered.

“Bloodwolves?” guessed Viktor, remembering the tales of the fearsome vicious beasts that were now haunting the Neverwood.

Solesstorn shook his head impatiently.

“Get on the horses. They’re wolfriders, orcs with wolves as mounts.”

“Orcs?” growled Viktor, “We wiped them out years ago…”

They had been walking for three days now and had covered a great distance.

They had stopped a few minutes ago to rest for the evening and now rain had begun to fall.
Takemasa tried to hide behind a stone. "Tyco weather. I wish we were on our shi..."

He was interrupted by a wolfhowl in the distance. He glanced around at Hidemitsu and Kor and was about to say something but Kor gestured at him to be quiet. Hidemitsu lay down with his ear to the ground. After about ten seconds he raised his head and looked at them.

"There are many of them, too many. I think they are chasing something. Sounded like horses." Kor gazed at him.

"Which direction are they moving?" He asked. "Directly away from us", he whispered. He stood up and gazed out into the darkness.

Everything was completely quiet except for the distant howls for a few moments but then Hidemitsu turned to them again. "There´s a stench in the air. These are no ordinary wolves." Kor raised an eyebrow. "What are they then?"

Hidemitsu shrugged slightly. "I don´t know, but there something foul and wicked about this. I wonder who they are chasing. They could need some help."

Takemasa gazed at his brother. "Are you mad? They could be anyone! Why don´t we just stay here and wait for the tyco wolves to dissappear."

"As I said, these are no ordinary wolves. Their intent seems wicked." He was interrupted by an inhuman roar in the distance.

Kor nodded seriously. "That´s certainly not a wolf."

Hidemitsu looked at Takemasa. "Give me your sword." Takemasa stared at him. "What?" Hidemitsu stepped forth and grabbed it from him. "Just give it to me or do you want me to fight the wolves wit this intellabrix dagger?" He handed his dagger over to Takemasa. "Now hide. I don´t want to lose you, I trust your ability to get away."

Takemasa stared at Hidemitsu for a few moments and then turned angrily and dissappeared into the darkness.

Hidemitsu turned to Kor. "I don´t want to force you to do anything, Kor."

Kor looked determined and Hidemitsu smiled slightly.

"Well, offer a prayer for the Sun and the Enlightened One", he said and grinned at Kor who had grasped the hilt of his sword.

Sharkey returned a grin, at least it was a grin for Orcs, a normal man wouldn't be able to make anything out of that move on his face.

"Are we going to strike?"

"Of course" Sharkey replied with a lot of snoring.

The Orcs made a hellish noise, slamming their swords, daggers or axe on their iron shields. Their wolfs added howls to the chorus. People in nearby villages crawled under their bed at the hearing of such a noise.

TheOrk wrote:“Don’t ye venturin’ off the main road unless one of yer mates are in danger. Don’t go near and any old ruins ye find. And most importantly don’t ye get caught outside after dark!”

Valric nodded in understanding. He had been in the Batlands before…
Grid: K-12
Location: The Batlands

The group encountered no strange ruins in their first day of travel. In fact, they encountered nothing at all. The gray land was as quiet and dead as a tomb. The only difference being that tombs are more homely.

The small group traveled all day, stopping only a few times to rest. One small stream, little more than a trickle, was the only water they came across. After testing it first, Valric let the horses drink. They then filled up all the water containers they could. For there was no guarantee that they would meet water again.

As night approached however, things got far worse. Despite ample warning, and reason to stay indoors during the night, the grouped camped it out. It was not their choice though.

During the entire day they had met no one. And, despite there best attempts, no shelter had been found. Not an abandoned hut or cave, though Valric warned them against caves.

In the end, with the sun almost completely set, their horses worn out, and no shelter found, the company had to make due with where they were.

Their chosen campsite was a small dell in the side of a cliff. No being could attack from behind, for the cliff rose over a hundred feet. The edges of the dell ran from the cliff and tapered off just before they met. It was the best they could find. At least they would have their backs protected, though, as Valric commented, if they met anything dangerous, it wasn't likely that it would do much good.

At Valric's directing, they built a large fire in the middle of the dell. It was fortunate for them that there was enough bramble to feed the fire.

After a miserable supper of cold meat and biscuits, the company put their horses against the cliff, and then sat down with their back against the horses, leaving the fire between them and the night.

Valric took first watch ("I'll never sleep anyway.") while the other three settled down into a fitful doze.

It was near midnight when it struck. It came at them from behind so fast, that Valric couldn’t even have cried out. He need not have anyway. The horses, upon seeing a dark shape descend from above, gave a whinny and bolted. One of them didn’t make it, the strange shape, which had landed right behind the horses, leapt onto the horse’ back and killed it with a swift bite to the neck.

It was then, in the glow of the firelight, that Valric saw what had attacked. It was drazard. About half the size of a dragon used for riding, it was slightly larger than a human. It, in most respects, was like an overgrown lizard. The only difference being that it breathed fire and had wings. Though the wings were only part of its heritage. They were far too small and scrawny to lift the drazard. The creature had got at them from behind by climbing down the cliff, as only a lizard could.

Valric, drew his sword, readying for battle. The other three were jumping to their feet, looking around for their weapons. Valric raised his sword to strike, when another sword flashed in the night. The weapon sped from behind Valric and buried itself in the creature’s throat.

Theodore walked up to the dead creature and drew his sword. He flashed a smile at Valric. “I never got around to showing this little move of mine. It can’t be done in practice.”

Rodney and Stickle laughed. Valric smiled, but said grimly. “Great job Theodore. But I sadly must break the mood. Drazards always travel in packs.”

The other three whirled to look up at the cliff face, but that was not where the danger lie. From behind the fire, now almost dead, came a chorus of growls.

K-12 The Batlands

The four warriors turned to look in the direction of the growls. Less then ten yards away under the dark tree line a shape appeared but quickly vanished. The four tensed and moved closer to the rock wall. Theodore, Valric raised their swords wearily. Rodney raised his frost spear, poised to throw it. Jother didn’t have a useful weapon so Rodney handed him his sword.

Valric muttered something angrily under his breath. No one’s gaze could penetrate the dark canopy infront of them.

“How do you slay these beasts again?” Asked Jother uncertainly.

Rodney looked at him “in all the ballads I know, the hero simply strikes off it’s head.”

“Aye” Laughed Valric.

Appearing under the treeline were several sets of glowing red eyes. A moment later three of the beasts charged into the clearing. Theodore’s sword whistled over Valric’s head burying itself in one of the drazards.

What happened next came as a blurr to everyone. Valric swung his sword at the lead drazards face. The thing lashed out with it’s claws and tail. Half the armour on Valric’s left shoulder was torn off, drawing blood. Then the drazard’s tail came up knocking Valric’s sword far from his hands.

Before he had time to swear the tail lashed out again, knocking him off his feet. Wrestling a drazard was not on Valric’s to do list but he had no choice now. Stumbling away from the thing’s claws he grabbed a fairly large rock and bashed the thing’s face in.

Rodney stabbed the third one with his spear. To Theodore’s amazment, ice seemed to form over the drazard’s wounds. Ice so cold it burnt. Theodore circled around it to retrieve his sword.

Once he recovered it he saw he wasn’t needed for the rest of the battle. The one drazard was frozen solid. The other seemed to go down under the pressure of Jother’s frantic thrusts and Valric’s cracks to the head.

Once they were all dead and the four seemed secure again more growls filled the night.

“Sadly must break the mood. Drazards always travel in large packs.” Growled Valric…

Hidemitsu and Kor silently approached the orc encampment. Both were dressed in pitch black clothes and they wore black masks. They saw a huge bonfire on a peak and orcs were standing everywhere. They were about 100 yards aaway from the encampment and they could barely see the orcs and wolves. But it was clear that most of the force had left and was chasing their prey. Hidemitsu gestured for Kor to stop and then he whispered:

"If we´ll approach further on, the wolves will be aware of us. Stay in this cleft and be aware. When they start to attack me, announce your presence and be prepared to fight."

Kor met Hidemitsu´s gaze and looked rather confused. "But, what are you going to do?"

"Oh, maybe I didn´t speak clearly. If you will approach further on they´ll be aware of us. I´ll try to sneak into the encampment and cause as much trouble as I can. You can help me best by standing here and distract them. I don´t think you´ll have any trouble defending yourself if you stay in this cleft. They look like orcs. They are tough but not good fighters."

Kor nodded and positioned him in the dark cleft. He had rocks on both sides and had barely enough space to move his sword without trouble. He bowed to Hidemitsu. "Good luck."

Hidemitsu returned the bow. "I wish you the same. Now the board is set. Their move."

He turned and lay down on the ground. Then he began to crawl towards the orcs. After a few seconds Kor couldn´t see or hear him. He just hoped that the wolves and orcs wouldn´t be more aware.

After about 5 minutes he suddenly heard loud shouts from the encampment and saw something that looked like a flash of lightning and then a thick cloud of smoke rose up from where the fire had been. Kor smiled and draw his sword. He let out a loud cry: "For the Emperor!"

He couldn´t see much of what was going on in the encampment but he heard a lot of voices and saw some shapes moving in his direction.

We have begun. Now it´s your move, greenskins.

“Milord?”

Lord Void groaned and lifted himself off the cot. He had been sleeping, trying to regain his energy after the obstruction fiasco.

“What is it?” he snapped, his temper rising.

He swung his feet to the floor, stood, and popped his monocle into place. He was still dressed in his black robes. He was always dressed in black robes. Lord Void looked irritably at the flap of the pavilion. He could see a bulky shadow outside.

“Enter!” he said, and at once Caimlin pushed away the flap, taking two steps into the pavilion.

“What is it?” he repeated.

Caimlin reported, “Sir, there has been a disturbance.”

Caimlin hesitated.

“Go on!” snapped Lord Void.

“Sir…” Caimlin did not seem to know how to go forward, “Sir, a Dragonar town has been captured.”

Lord Void did not outwardly react. So, he mused, the peace BloodVaine inadvertently created has at last been broken.

“Which town?”

“Gulaan, sir. It’s Dragonar’s third largest source of ore.”

“I am aware of that.” said Lord Void dryly, “Who are the attackers? Royals? Ninjas?”

“Actually…sir…” Caimlin scratched his chin, “It’s Dragon Masters.”

This time Lord Void did react. He stared at Caimlin.

“What?”

“This,” Caimlin said, “was sent to Madadelillon, a neighboring city.”

Caimlin handed over a package. It was bulky and something inside it rattled. Lord Void tore it open. A board of wood painted in a black and white checkerboard pattern was revealed. Written across the board were the words, “Your move.”

Something else slipped out of the shreds of packaging. Lord Void picked it up.

“What is it?” asked Caimlin.

“It’s a chess piece.” said Lord Void slowly, “A white king.”

“What does it mean?” asked Caimlin.

“It’s a challenge…” said Lord Void.

“From who?” asked Caimlin.

“I…” Lord Void looked blank, but inwardly his mind was clicking and whirring.

“Dragonsbane.” he spat out, “Ajaxx Dragonsbane. The fool. He’s hijacked the Dragonsbane Brigade and has bent them to his will. He plans to overthrow me.”

“How do you know/” asked Caimlin, agape.

“I know…” said Lord Void, “I know.”

Jaythus was scared, even more than he had been during the escape from Orion. Orcs...? What are they? And on wolves? he thought dimly. Viktor and Santis are great warriors, and I can tell Solesstorn has a lot of power, but Orcs...they might be magical as well... Jaythus shuderred.

"Where are we going?" Santis hissed from behind.

"Out of these plains," Solesstorn answered.

"Umm..." Viktor began.

"What now?" snapped Solesstorn.

"What's that smell?" Viktor asked.

Suddenly, the tense silence was smashed as a howl broke out across the plains. Santis was about to speak, but the words died in his mouth, as a huge, mottled beast, an awful mockery of a wolf, ridden by some ugly creature that Jaythus couldn't make out, but he assumed that it was an Orc. The Orc gave a guttural cry, raising a dark sword, and then the wolf sprang from the rock towards the group. Despite their deadly peril, Viktor and Santis were frozern with fear.

"FIGHT!" Solesstorn roared, swinging his staff, rousing Santis and Viktor from their shock. Santis and Viktor both unsheathed their swords, and then, with a wild shout, charged at the approaching wolf rider chieftain.

A dozen more wolf riders followed him.

There was a pause, and then Caimlin said tentatively, “What are you plans, milord?”

Lord Void snapped out of darkly brooding.

“Crush him.” said Lord Void at once, “Squash him before he spreads.”

“Shall I gather a force, then, milord?”

Caimlin started toward the flap.

“No.”

Caimlin stopped.

“Milord?”

Lord Void looked at the chessboard thoughtfully.

“Organize three windships.” he said, “have them fully equipped by tomorrow.”

“Yessir.”

Though the Fright Knights built and owned and used 90% of all the windships in Dametreos, the Dragon Masters had their own fleet of fifty or so, spread throughout Dragonar. Lord Void would have much preferred to take his airship, the Arklyndellys Vulondur, but it had been destroyed during the BloodVaine War. And Lord Void could not acquire another airship. There had only three airships ever built in Dametreos, and all had been destroyed within the last two years. Of course, there was the option of buying and flying one from Ikros or some other distant country, but not even Lord Void could afford that. So three windships would have to suffice.

Caimlin left the pavilion. Lord Void returned to bed. He needed his power for tomorrow…

Ajaxx Dragonsbane was sitting outside, on top of the roof of the cookhouse, staring at the sky. It had been four days since he had captured Gulaan.

There was a scrape, and Japheth pulled himself up beside Ajaxx.

“Why ye be here, Ajaxx?” asked Japheth, “There be much more enjoyment below.”

Ajaxx murmured, “I’m waiting.”

“For what?”

Ajaxx said nothing. Japheth shrugged and took a bite out of a pastry he had brought up with him. He ate noisily. Ajaxx appeared not to notice. Minutes passed. The sun neared the horizon. The mosquitoes began to come out. Japheth finished his pastry, wiping away the crumbs. There was a sudden cry from one of the lookouts, perched atop another, higher roof.

“There be something coming this way!”

Ajaxx was at once on his feet.

“By land or air?” he called.

“Air, milord, three of them!”

“Dragons?”

“Aye, big ‘uns!”

After a pause, the lookout called, “Windships! They be windships!”

“Fright Knight or Dragon Master?”

“Dragon Master, by their colors!”

Ajaxx leapt off the roof.

“DRAGONSBANE BRIGADE!” he bellowed, “TO THE MINES! TO THE MINES!”

Out of the longhouses, recruits stumbled into the main street hastily, pulling on shirts and snapping on armor. They were slightly confused.

“Be we attacked?” murmured many.

“TO THE MINES!” Ajaxx bellowed, “TYCO IT, TO THE MINES!”

The Brigade began to fumble their way, following the tracks, to the ore mines. Ajaxx continued to bellow at them all, hurrying them along.

“DEEP!” he cried, “GO DEEP!”

Ajaxx looked up. He could clearly see the three windships now, with the muscled dragons laboring under the weight of a heavy woven basket. Ajaxx rushed forward and pushed the remaining stragglers into the mine mouth, and continued pushing until he, the last one in, was fifty feet from in entrance. Then he ordered all be quiet. No one knew what plan Ajaxx had, or if he had a plan at all…

Viktor had been frightened when he first saw the ominous and ugly figure of the chieftain, but Solesstorn’s shout shook him out of his fear. Then he began to feel anger. And a sort of bloodlust. It had been many a month since Viktor had cleaved an orc in two. Nasty, evil, filthy creatures orcs, with no moral and a taste for human blood. Viktor had lost many soldiers to orcs. Many of the soldiers had been friends.

“GRAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!”

Viktor and Santis shouted in unison, their Orkosanian blood rising. With a shing, their swords were drawn -- Santis’ a metallic-gray Eastern Knight’s Kingdom sword, and Viktor’s a battered Crusader broadsword. They charged forward, while Solesstorn remained slightly behind, rearing his warhorse and wielding his staff. Jaythus, the only unarmed one, clutched at Solesstorn and watched, wide-eyed and pale.

Seeing the two bright-red, armor-clad men coming toward him, the orc chieftain kicked his wolf mount and drew a two-foot-long scimitar, rusty and pitted. He charged, a dozen more wolf riders followed him. Santis and Viktor did not halt their charge. Anyone who ever thought or called Eastern Knight’s Kingdomers cowardly should have been there, in Santis’ and Viktor’s place. Would they had stayed the course? Perhaps, perhaps not, but Santis and Viktor did.

Right before they clashed with the orcs, there was bright, painful flash of light. At first Viktor thought lightning had struck, but a moment later he realised Solesstorn had released a burst of magic, incinerating two wolves and their riders. Two down, eleven to go. Viktor plunged his sword into the chest of an orc.

Khorne ran down the hill and plunged his sword in the belly of a wolf. The surprised Orc on top of it made a yell and soon three other wolves charged him. The first one jumped over Khorne, but in a swift move he had removed the legs of the beast. The two others charged, firing arrows at Khorne, but with some jumps and turns, he dodged them. At the sight of him dodging the arrows, the Orcs' fragile morale broke and they wanted to flee, but the dark voice of their master sounded in their heads and forced them to keep on fighting.

The rain kept on pouring, a lightning flash illuminated the plains, followed by the hellish noise of thunder. The rain started to fall even harder. Khorne black hair stick on his face, smudging his sight.

The riders charged again, now with their rusted blades. Khorne parried one with his sword and dodged the other. He threw the Orc of the wolf and incernated him with a flaming ball. Solesstorn was busy finishing of a wolf, while suddenly another rider jumped over the corpse. With one of it's huge claws, it instantly killed Solesstorn's steed and threw him and Jaythus on the ground. Solesstorn rolled away, but Jaythus got the full weight of the wolf on him. Jaythus was terrified and screamed, he yelled at Solesstorn, but suddenly noticed a small line of blood running over the wizard's head. He was sure the wizard wasn't dead, for he was still breathing, perhaps he was just out for a few seconds. Jaythus was desperate.

Why was he even here? This is not a place for an ambassador!

The wolf that killed their warhorse stood with it's frontlegs on the horse, it's head was pointed right at Jaythus. The beast roared and opened his big, smelly beak. Spit and drool flew in Jaythus' face. Jaythus was scared, no way he would make it alive out of this one. The wolf raised his head and howled. It looked back at Jaythus, opened his beak and was ready to strike. Jaythus closed his eyes, waiting on the final moment, but it didn't came. He opened one eye and then another. The wolf lay dead on the horse and it's rider almost entirely covered Jaythus. From what he could see, the wolf got riddled full of arrows. Beautiful arrows, made out of oak and finished with a dark green plume at the end.

Jaythus looked around and noticed a man on a hill to the left of him. The man's bronze hair was carried on the wind, just as his black cloak.

Thank Chodan, Jaythus thought, we aren't alone over here

Next to him, Solesstorn crawled back up. The man on the hill ran down towards him, followed by two others, judging by their forms, a woman and another man. In the distance, Jaythus saw another man fighting wolves and not so far of him, Viktor and Santis were holding out.

"Solesstorn, I, eh, could use some help here" Jaythus managed to bring out. The weight of the animals was almost killing him.

After about 5 minutes he suddenly heard loud shouts from the encampment and saw something that looked like a flash of lightning and then a thick cloud of smoke rose up from where the fire had been.
Hidemitsu rolled out of the cloud of smoke and got on his feet. He held the katana in one hand and a shuriken in the other. He was on top of a peak and the smoke was quickly spreading downwards from the fire. He quietly thanked his old mentor for his alchemical training and glanced around the camp. About a dozen orcs were running towards Kor and approximately the same number were runninmg around and screaming in the camp. Another ten orcs were getting on their wolves.

Hidemitsu wouldn´t wait longer. He had already cut the throat of the guard by the fire but it wouldn´t be the last orc who died tonight. He he screams and sounds of fighting from the other direction too but it was too close too be the orc´s prey. But he didn´t have time to think about that.

He fixed his gaze on one of the running orcs and threw his shuriken at him. He jumped off the peak before he saw where it hit and landed right in front of the orc who let out a loud cry when he felt the cold blade of the shuriken scratch his face but his suffering was short. With one graceful sweep Hidemitsu had ripped open the orc´s body from shoulder to hip and he fell forwards. Two more closed in to him and he cut off one head and thrust the katana through the other but he saw that he would stand no chance. The ground before him was getting black from the blood but now the ten wolfriders and the other orcs who had remained in the camp were approaching him. He relaxed and focused his mind...
Kor smiled and draw his sword. He let out a loud cry: "For the Emperor!"

He couldn´t see much of what was going on in the encampment but he heard a lot of voices and saw some shapes moving in his direction.

We have begun. Now it´s your move, greenskins.
Kor had never seen orcs before but he had heard about him. And they were exactly as disgusting as he had been told. He beheaded the first one who came up to him and then he cut the arm off the next who walked atop his fallen comrade. He still felt quite secure. They couldn´t reach him more than one at the time.

Two more orcs approached him but he didn´t see that they had throwing axes before it was too late. He managed to dodge one of them but the other hit him in his left shoulder and his left arm became totally paralyzed. The pain overwhelmed him at first and he fell down on his knees but he managed to overcome it and stood once again. He kept the katana in only one hand and readied himself for the attack. He parried the scimitar which came down at him but he couldn´t resist it with one arm and was pushed to the ground again by the force.

He was lying there and saw the scimitar coming down again and was sure that his last moment had came but then a dagger hit the orc in the chest and it stumbled backwards. Kor didn´t care about where it had come from but raised up and quickly finished off the orc before it had time to react. The next one was coming for him now and he raised the katana again. But then he heard a voice behind him:

"Don´t worry, Kor. I´m with you."

Kor didn´t have time to look who had spoken. The orc jumped at him but he managed to dodge and thrust the blade through the stomach of it. Another one was coming but it fell down a couple of yards away. Kor gazed at it but it was hard to see anything in the darkness but he could hear a few choking breaths and then the umistakable sound of a broken neck. A small shape emerged from the darkness and smiled at him. It was Takemasa. Kor couldn´t help but smile back.

"Thank you, Takemasa." But Takemasa shrugged. "We haven´t got time to talk. Now let´s fight these... things."

He bent down and took the dagger from the chest of one of the fallen orcs. More orcs were coming. A flash of lightning illuminated the carnage and then a hellish blast of thunder drowned all sounds of battle for a moment.

The three windships were now directly over the city of Gulaan. Lord Void, in the lead windship, peered over the edge of the wicker basket.

"Maintain position." he ordered.

"Yessir."

The Dragon Master sorted through a pile of signal flags and waved a particular one to the other two windships. All three pilots of the windships tugged on ropes and the dragons stopped flying forward, their wings beating.

Lord Void reached out a head and closed his eyes.

"They're in the mines." he murmured.

Then he blasted a powerful wave of deadly magic at the mountain. A moment later he got the biggest shock of his life.

The magic bounced off the mountainside like light off a mirror and blasted the windships instead. Lord Void barely managed to throw up a shield of protection around his windship, but the other two windships were incinerated. Completely panicked, the dragon began to fly away as fast as it could, pulling the rest of the windship with it. Lord Void stared dumbly at the rapidly dissapearing city of Gulaan. Then his face darkened.

"That megabloks!" he snarled.

Inside the mines, the Dragonsbane Brigade was cheering. But Japheth was befuddled.

"Why be we protected?" he asked Ajaxx over the din.

In the dim light, Ajaxx smiled.

"These hills be full of a crystal, a powerful crystal. This crystal repells all magic. It be a shield agaisnt Mana magic, Earth Magic, Megabloks Magic...all. And now...it be time for my next move..."

TheOrk wrote:“Sadly must break the mood. Drazards always travel in large packs.” Growled Valric…
Grid: K-12
Location: The Batlands

"What?" cried Theodore. "How many are there usually in a pack?"

"Around two dozen." Stated Valric flatly.

Theodore gulped. “Then why haven't they all attacked?"

"Testing us," replied Valric. "First one attacks, then four or five. Then the whole pack."

As if to illustrate his words, the rest of drazards moved from the shadows into the firelight. The group moved more cautiously than the previous monsters. They spread out in a half circle, trapping the travelers against the cliff.

Theodore made a mental count. Seventeen left. This was not going to be easy. With no hope of escape or rescue it looked rather grim. The only good thing in the whole mess was that the drazards, being as close as they were, could only come at them eight at a time.

The knight, however, had not entered the thought of fire into his mind. Stopping within five yards of the men, the creatures rose on their hind legs and spewed a mouth full of flame at them.

Theodore and Valric crouched down and raised their shields, giving a fair amount of protection. Jother was whispering something and appeared to be unharmed. Rodney, being without a shield was the most hurt. His arms and legs had slight burns all over them, but he didn't seem too injured.

The fire had barely stopped when the drazards leapt at them. Valric, Theodore, and Rodney jumped to their feet and each caught a leaping drazard on their weapons.

From that moment onward, Theodore lost track of the others. His whole mind was focused on the monsters assailing him.

The knight/general caught another of the creatures in stomach, but the drazard's momentum nearly wrenched the sword out of his hand. Rather than lose his weapon, Theodore fell with the body. He pulled it free and tried to stand up.

He didn't make it. Two drazards leapt onto him. One tried to hold his legs down, while the other tried to bite his throat out.

The knight thought quickly. Grabbing the drazard going for his throat, by the neck, he kicked out at the other one. His feet caught the drazard solidly in stomach. It rolled a few yards away.

Still holding one drazard by the neck, Theodore staggered upright and threw his sword at the drazard he had kicked. The weapon drove into the animal’s skull, and the body fell down dead.

The weight, plus the struggling, of the other drazard became too much, and the knight again fell to the ground. However, he managed to fall on top of the drazard, into which he dug his knees. He then drew out his dagger and stabbed the creature in the throat.

Panting, Theodore sat on his heels and looked for the others. He hadn't even gotten a glimpse, when his right arm exploded in pain.

A drazard had latch onto his armored limb and was attempting to rip it off. Unfortunately, that was the arm which held the dagger. He reached round with his left arm, and attempted to strangle the creature.

The drazard, seeing what he was going to do, beat him to the punch, literally. A clawed hand smashed into the side of Theodore's head, making stars appear. The knight might have blacked out, but the pain coming from his arm kept him conscience.

Fearing he was soon going to die, Theodore tried one last move. Rearing up, he fell backward onto the drazard. It might not have done much good, save that the drazard's head landed on a particularly hard rock.

It didn't do much damage to monster, but dizzy with the pain, the drazard relaxed its grip on the knight's arm a little. That was the opening Theodore needed. Wrenching his arm out of the mouth, he drove his left fist into the drazards throat. At the same time, plunging the dagger into its chest.

The creature gave a few week growls, and then stood still.

The battered knight looked about. Only one drazard could be seen alive. And it was running away from the men as fast as it could. It didn't even get a few yards before Rodney's spear embedded itself into the creature's back.

Theodore slowly got to his feet. Apart from multiple scratches and small burns, only his arm was in bad shape.

Of course, that in itself was not too good. He could barely feel his arm. It was probably broken, or at least pulled out of its socket.

He hobbled over to Rodney. He had no broken bones or bad cuts, but his legs were a mass of burns. Fortunately none look too serious.

Jother was unscarred, but appeared to be in a magically induced coma. Valric was the best in condition. His worst wound was a long cut on his left arm, which easily bound.

Valric saw to the others. Nothing could be done for Jother at the moment. They would just have to leave him be and hope he woke up. After putting some salve on Rodney's burns, and bandaging them up, it was only Theodore left.

"So what now?" asked Theodore as Valric saw to his arm.

"We keep going. Even with our horses gone."

"Hmm, no chance of tracking them down?"

"No. They'll be eaten by sunrise." Remarked Valric grimly. "Well, your arm is not broken, just pulled out of its socket." The knight grabbed the arm, pushed, and with an audible pop, the arm fit back into place.

Theodore grunted with pain, but experimentally moved his arm. It hurt like tyco, but it moved.

"Hmmm," commented Valric. "I don't think your going to be able to use that arm for a couple of days."

"That’s alright." Smiled Theodore.

"Oh, why?"

"Because I know something you don't." Laughed Theodore. "I am not right-handed."

He bent down and took the dagger from the chest of one of the fallen orcs. More orcs were coming. A flash of lightning illuminated the carnage and then a hellish blast of thunder drowned all sounds of battle for a moment.
The sounds came back to them with a loud roar. Five orcs stood a few yards away. They held scimitars in their hands and roared loudly. Takemasa jumped up on one of the cliffs and took a few running steps to the orcs and then he jumped at the first one with the dagger ready to cut and threw a shuriken at the next at the same time.

Kor rushed forward from his safe place at the same time. He wasn´t really sure what to do but he wouldn´t leave Takemasa to fight alone. He charged the third orc and cut open it´s stomach.

In the meantime Takemasa had stabbed the first orc in the eye and dodged a clumsy cut. Then he stroke the second one who had been hit by the shuriken in the face. It stumbled and fell backwards.

Kor jumped away from the two standing orcs and finished off the lying one. He glanced at Takemasa who threw another shuriken at one of the remaining orcs. It hit him in the eye and it let out a loud scream. Kor instantly lept at the other one and cut off the hand holding the scimitar.

It joined the other orc in a terrible howling chorus and Takemasa and Kor finished off both of them.

Everything became rather quiet now. Almost too quiet. They looked at the encampment but couldn´t see anything. They heard a few wolves roar but otherwise it was quiet.

Kor shrugged off some rainwater and looked at Takemasa.

They didn´t need to speak. Takemasa began to run toward the encampment and Kor followed him.

Lord Void had returned to the Grolling Fortress. He was fuming.

“I am a fool!” he snarled, pacing back and forth, his white hands clutched behind his back.

Caimlin thought it wise not to say anything.

“He’s smart, that Dragonsbane, smarter than I thought…”

Lord Void continued to pace.

“The Terraynsian Mines…of course…Terrayn crystals…CHODAN TYCO IT!”

Caimlin twiddled his thumbs. He had little knowledge of magical matters, and he had no idea what the significance of Terrayn crystals was. He had also not been there to witness the failure. He had little idea at what had happened at all.

“Sir?” he asked quietly.

“What?” snapped Lord Void, still pacing.

“What are Terrayn crystals?”

“They’re a rare form of crystal,” Lord Void explained automatically, “They are useless as a commercial item. They’re muddy-white, and always blemished. No jeweler wastes time cutting a Terrayn. But…for reasons unknown, they nullify all forms of magic.”

“All forms?” repeated Caimlin.

Lord Void nodded his head impatiently.

“All forms. Nothing and penetrate them. Dragonsbane was cunning…he knew he couldn’t stand up to me magically, so…he invaded southern Dragonar and captured Gulaan, a city surrounded by Terrayn deposits. Cunning indeed…”

“Shall I initiate Code Dragon?” asked Caimlin.

Code Dragon was a clever piece of magic-work created by an ancient Dragon Master warlock. When activated, a short teleharm was sent to all Dragon Master males over the age of eighteen, ordering them to congregate at the Fire Breathing Fortress. It was not unlike the Black Knight’s Golden horn: it called Dragon Masters to war when the Dragon Master state was in peril.

“No.” snapped Lord Void.

“But, milord!” Caimlin protested, “This a grave matter of national security.”

“Caimlin!” Lord Void bark, halting and glowering at his brigadier-general, “Leave the managing of Dragonar to me! You are to return to the Fortress and continue to oversee it’s construction.”

Caimlin bowed stiffly.

“Yes, milord.”

“And while you’re leaving, sent a teleharm to the Wyrms. They are to come to the Grolling Fortress now.”

“Yessir.”

The Wyrms were an elite group of Dragon Masters. They were breeders, riders and spies all at once. Their mounts were raised from birth, and were nurtured with an affection each rider showed no one else. It was rumored they could communicate telepathically not only with their dragons, but with other animals as well, enhancing their tracking and spying skills.

An hour later, Lord Void met the Wyrms outside under the scorching late August sun. There were thirteen Wyrms: there were always thirteen Wyrms. There wore all black: dragonskin and scales. However close they were to their dragons, the Wyrms had no qualms about wearing the flesh of dragons. Their were pale: more Fright Knight in appearance than Dragon Master, and none had facial hair of any kind. If they removed their tight-fitting skull helmets, it would be revealed that they were all bald.

Lord Void did not bother with preamble.

“I want you to find a man.” he said, “A Wolfpack. He goes by Morgue. Bring him here, but not against his will. Give him this if he is hesitant.”

Lord Void tossed two large purses to the first two Wyrms. He turned away. His instructions were over. The thirteen Wyrms turned about in unison and mounted their dragons. With powerful thrusts of hind legs and heavy beating of wings, the dragons with their riders rose into the air and soon were gone from sight.
