The other thing I was thinking for people who cant attend, you could still contribute ideas and designs. As far as a community you can still be represented in that manner. it would be that much better with your contributions.

Well, we could just use the new standard peasant torso: Image
*EDIT: Aliencat, it looks like most of the bricklink lots for these type of torsos are only available in any decent qty in Europe. You might have to be the shipping destination for a couple of orders, if that's the direction we decide to go...

Also, how about peasant figs could have Green/Red hips depending on what side they belong to?
I don't think the peasants need to be 100% true to the game, where they all look 100% identical to each other for it to work. They could have different faces and brown/black cowls just to make it easier on folks. (or, one civ could use black cowls, one could use brown, to further distinguish the two sides since they're pretty generic.)

David, you and I (and whoever else wants to) will have to get together at the next SEALUG meeting to smash this out some more for sure.

Also, what if every type of unit represented in the build were shown in a display area off to the side with a little placard that showed the unit type and base stats from the game? It would also serve as a legend for people to know what they're looking at.

the female villagers all wear dresses. That should be easy to do.
But what about the male? they only wear pants and strut around without shirts on. that would be alot of yellow skin all around.
Bwahahahahahaha. That's awesome. I'm tempted to start making some villagers right now....

I have a bunch of these, if you want to "farm out" (see what I did there?) creation of peasants so other folks don't want to have to resort to buying off of Bricklink to outfit them.

I'll try to make it as well, just to see what else you guys might need or how you want to divide things.

Would this collaboration only be for those who have played the game? Or would reference shots be made available for those whose brothers have played, but who themselves are sadly ignorant? Just wondering. 8)

I might just fire up the game and take some screenshots....

You can see some buildings here for reference:

And you can find a lot of game-screenshots all over the internet so you can see how they look together etc.

Just a few thoughts from my end.

1. With a limited number builders, we may want to focus on one civilization and make it really good, rather than stretch ourselves thin trying to do two.

2. I would prefer the bare-chested peasent, rather than trying to come up with another torso. I'm afraid that replacing the most common figure in the game may make it unrecognizable. Plain yellow torsos should work, in my opinion.

3. We should have it be at least the "Castle" age and probably even go to the "Imperial" age, so that we can actually have a castle.

4. I think it would be cool to have the borders of the landscaping be black, to show the unexplored regions of the game. Doing this may make it much more recognizable.

Thoughts?

I would agree on that Josh great ideas!
As for Ages... My best opinions would be the castle or Feudal age. Sadly to my liking the Man at arms are only awailable in the feudal age...
Since i find the Man at arms much more castly than the Longswordsman in the castle age.

Just so you know, Katie, the regular co-operative layout will still be going on. This is not a replacement.

This may convince me to actually play the game. I played the demo of the first AoE way back when it came out, but never got the second game until recently. It sort of works on my computer, I should actually play around some more with it.

Anyway, on the collaboration, I'd love to pitch in some buildings. I like Josh's idea of sticking to one faction. In my mind, that means making a single city surrounded by wilderness and the 'fog-of-war', like the games, and having characters going about their business. I'd think we'd need to narrow down a particular faction, then identify some of the buildings and forces that should be in it, and have everyone start building from the list.

Of course, I think it's way too early for me to start building anything. I haven't even finished recovering from Brickcon... ugh, more sorting tonight...

Just a heads up for people trying to play it on Windows 7. The colors may go off. The grass might turn red and the oceans completelly strange. Shown in these images: Linky.
If you have this problem use this soulution:
""This solution requires the use of a game crack. Some people call them illegal and deem them unappropriate to use. Cracks are only files that make the CD/DVD obsolete. So that you can play your games without having the CD/DVD in your DVD drive. If you don't want to use cracks this aid won't help you.""
1. Open Notepad.
2. Type in this:
taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
empires2.exe
Start explorer.exe
3. save as AOE2.bat (it's important that you save it as a bat file. Choose another name if you like)
4.Save the bat file whereever you want. like on your desktop.
5. open the bat file and everything should work and the colours should be all clear now.
WARNING! the bat will close all Windows tasks up at the moment, so open the bat only when you want to play and don't have anything vital up. WARNING!

Hope this helps.

I also thought it would be cool to have some "fog of war" areas in the build. I also considered only building one civilization's town, though maybe you could have some enemy soldiers attacking something as well, since the actual battles are the whole point of the game.
As for the peasants, I'm all for doing the yellow torsos, I just don't have any and thought that the other ones would be more readily available. If people have a lot of yellow torsos, by all means, let's go that direction with it.
I'll volunteer to do the Teuton castle, if nobody minds. My collection is pretty limited to mainly grays and blacks, so that would be the easiest thing for me to contribute to. I can also do a stone/gold mine I think.

As for this being open only to those who have played the game, I would say I'm open to contributions from anyone, personally. There certainly are tons of resources online for screenshots for reference.

Just a thought, for the "fog of war", maybe we could elevate the black area to the height of a few bricks to give it a little depth?
