Hey all,

It looks like CoWLUG put on a display last weekend, and Dave O'Hare's castle was a large part of the display. Legozilla's Flickr gallery:

So, Dave, how was the show?

Holy cow! That castle is amazing. I can't even think where to start...

There is a ton of detail and it would take forever to say everything I admire about it. Oh, and there was a display...?

It's massive! This begins to approach a scale that Minas Tirith would need to be on. There is great detail, such as the dragon head coming out the cave mouth.

But I can't help to be under-awed. Aside from the amount of grey, nothing really reaches out and grabs me. There is too little (aside from the ring of flowers at the base) that looks organic. There's a heavy sort of industrial feel. It's like someone built a castle-ish building covering two city blocks. It feels more like a Medieval Times restaurant/facility than a castle. There's not enough rounded off, no towers that catch the eye (and the imagination), flags, fountains and so on.

Dave I hope this post isn't taken to heart. I don't want you to take this as negative or some kind of attack. Indeed, I marvel at the size and scope. I love the decorated floor of the courtyard and such touches. I also like the continuity you carry throughout evidenced best by the dark gray window detail. I hope to be able to build so big some time.

This is a hugh castle! I like the courtyard in this pic, although the walls facing it don't do much for me. The outside is rather repetitve, but it still looks well fortified and strong. I really like the base.

If I am correct, this happened quite a while ago. Way back when I saw this display on flickr. So I don't think it is new news. But...
That thing is awesome. It looks better on display then the pictures he took at his house of the whole thing (probably because it is not elevated on a table at his house)

Awesome.

This is an undeniable masterpiece. The builder must have had a lot of time on his hands; time that was definitely put to good use!

Heya all!

I think I missed this thread! Thanks for all the compliments, comments and criticisms!

I agree -- there is not nearly enough detail in these pics. I had to remove a lot of the best stuff to transport the thing, and there was just not enough time.

I do indeed promise there will be a LOT of fun detail in there -- but I have two small kids and they tend to remove any cool bits I add (and replace them with cats for some reason). Alas.

Anyway, the outer walls are quite repetitive, but, I actaully wanted a pretty standard look to the outside. I will be adding a lot of detail - figs, rubbish, etc, here in a bit.

So, def love all the comments (Blue Knight) -- all comments are good!

Thanks again!

Dave
