My school's principal sent out an e-mail for us not to see it. And not that I would want to anyway. It's very odd (Brits (Matt, I'm Irish) included due to them being mixed up with cowboys and talking polar bears!) and, come on, the guy wants to poison little kids' minds against certain religions (included Muslims, Buddah and other beliefs) finally: This guy (to make it famous) used the most popular acters, best quality stuff, and made it (supposily) 100% amazing. Which, as my English teacher said: it's similar to Naria to make it look bad. (Which it also dissappointed me, they could have done a lot better). If I offended anyone: I'm most sorry, now and will willing take back what I said...

- The Balck Ranger (who is very ticked off by the name of this movie (The Golden Compass, that's very original *sarcasm*)

I must confess I haven't heard of this movie from any other sources than CC so I guess there isn't much I can say about it. Some Steampunk imagery could always be a good thing in my opinion, but I don't think I will go see it, unless I get dragged along with some friends that is..

These reactions always confuse me. I mean, if there was something in a movie that challenged whatever faith I would have, I'd check it out just so that I could prove it wrong, and IF my faith couldn't stand a challenge from a simple Hollywood movie, it wouldn't be worth believing in my opinion.. (like wunztwice pointed out)

Unbelievable that a principal tries to influence the (not even yet formed) opinions of kids. In what country do you live? :?

He said he's Irish:

If you want to tell me why I should be a Christian, by all means send me a PM, but keep those comments out of the forums.
I agree with this. Discussion on Christianity should be limited to the book/film's portrayal. A discussion on why you should/shouldn't be a Christian is not appropriate for the board. We're already pushing the rules as it is.

In my opinion some people should change their signatures as well in that case...

I think there's a difference between a sig and a post. A (non-offensive) quote from the Bible in a sig wouldn't lead to any controversy. Posting that you 'should' be a Christian would (as has already been shown in this thread).

Sir Kohran is indeed right in this - the admins and mods have discussed sigs with a religious tone/reference in the past, and found that as long as they are respectful, they are fine.

Black Ranger, I have the utmost respect for your feelings of faith and your will to bring everyone to Christianity, but would indeed take Maedhros's side here - keeping the discussion to the movie and religion is one thing, but telling others what they should believe is a bit too far for CC (a LEGO website  ).

Now, back to the movie... and everyone play nice! :)

This is a very dangerous conversation IMO, and it certainly has gone far beyond what I'm confortable with on these forums. I can only hope that a moderator locks it soon.

Talking about religion is fine and good, but it does tend to stir the worst of emotions. Judging an author's work without having read it is inherently dangerous. Telling others to do the same is even worse. The fact that one does or doesn't agree with his views doesn't automatically make the work blasphemous or destructive.

I remember alot of similar comments coming out about Harry Potter a few years back. Staying true to your beliefs is sound advice so long as you don't let others start thinking for you.

Agreed. Sorry to all I offended, I get a little ruffled at times, especially when I principal is pushing us away from it and giving it 0/10 ratings. I like good quialty films, and yet, I'm being ordered around. Some demorcarcy.... So forget what I've said.

Hey guys,

I'm not going to lock this, because that's not something I really do, but I did want to clarify something about this forum. The intent of this forum (previously called "real castles") was to have a place to discuss actual castle history and architecture, medieval customs, heraldry, proper weaponry, etc, with the idea that this would help make our castle MOCs more authentic. The forum was originally called "real castles", but the name change was meant to connote that the forum is not just about the actual buildings but the full historical picture. From there, there has been a tendency to step away from true history to talk a bit about what books and/or movies inspire your building. However, this has never been a general place to discuss books and movies that happen to have some castle relevance. Trust me, I spent a lot of years being very involved in Tolkien and Lewis forums, and I could spawn a thousand threads on arcane aspects of Middle Earth and Narnia (and Earthsea, and Pern, and the Land, and and and). So I think we should be very careful about how far afield we go from our original topic areas. We don't have an off topic forum for a reason.

On sig lines, these have been discussed in detail by the admins/mods. We've basically come down on the side of leniency in sigs as long as they were short and respectful and didn't go out of their way to put anyone else down. Essentially it's the difference between "Go UCLA!" and "Down with USC!" (or replace those with whatever two sports rivals make sense to you). We allow "My religion is good" type lines, but not "Your religion is bad." I know, it's subtle, because promoting one belief system is inherently going against an opposing belief system, but there it is. Personally I'd do away with any sigs except links to LEGO related material (e.g. my sig line below), but I understand that sig lines and avatars are the way people personalize their posts.

I do understand, but religion was a very big part of medieval life. So every movie about the middle ages is going to contain religious aspects. So maybe we shouldn't talk about movies and books in this forum at all, but talk about real life medieval stuff (like it used to be ;)).
Becuase the movie IS out.
I wasn't aware of that, I thought is was airing next friday, I'm sorry.
