This looks like an incredible movie. I certainly hope a domestic distributor picks it up as I would love to see it subtitled and brought over here. With so many duds on the historical epic front, it's nice to see something with some real promise.

I was a bit confused but man, the movie looks worth it for the *stunning* battle scenes alone. I will definitely have to see this at some point.

It is probbaly impossible for you to see this movie outside of china becuase china stopped letting their people see movies from the usa, europe, etc. They did this so their people watch Chinese movies. China also said that after a while they will let non-Chinese movies able to come in China.

As like as Crouching Tiger, HERO, or Curse of the Golden Flower, the main target market of The Warlords are China, Hong Kong and USA.

I haven't seen this movie yet, although it is out in theaters here in Hong Kong and Taiwan, that I have seen. It seems to be very popular and is in every theater that I've gone to in the last couple of weeks.

I actually don't want to see it; I have a sort of informal ban on Chinese movies (:P) because I haven't liked any of them that I've seen made after the early 80's. I didn't like "Crouching Tiger" that much, and I thought that "Curse of the Golden Flower" was abysmal stuff, although the battles were impressive.

That said, all of my friends (even female friends) really want to see this, and it has English subtitles, so I might break my rule and try it out - it looks as though it might be a good movie.

ericgizmo - There was, I believe, a ban on movies that are not Chinese in mainland China. I'm not sure if it is still in effect, but I did hear about it. As far as I've seen, this ban does not affect Hong Kong or Taiwan. I just saw "I am Legend" in Taiwan last weekend.

China is putting the ban in affect to boost their own movie industry. It is similar to a tactic used earlier by the Koreans, that worked very well and led to the development of a very healthy movie industry.

Without getting too political, I do find the law a bit hypocritical and unfair, but I am not really upset by it and understand the logic. I don't think it's worth debating.

A ban or a selected ban on movies are taken in Mainland China. The main reason is all about trade and China government would like to protect its movie industry. People in China still can enjoy the western moive as most of them download from BT and buy illegal copies. I think China government is encouraging this phenomenon. So it is all about the trade problem but not about the freedom of speech.

All of these only happen in Mainland China. Hong Kong don't affect. Because the system is totally different between Hong Kong and China. All systems in Hong Kong remain unchange as same as ruled by England.

I didn't know there was a HKLUG, but I wish I did! I would have loved to check that out! I actually went from Hong Kong to Taiwan from 20 Dec to now, so I missed the Hong Kong Brick Show...

Excellent point! I hadn't considered that at all? Is it really true I wonder? I know that Crouching Tiger was pretty popular in the US, but not sure what everyone thought about it. Anyway, that made me laugh.

As for the film ban, I had TOTALLY forgotten about the black market for movies in China. It is HUGE. My friends who live in a city in China but very near to Hong Kong always ask us what movies we want them to get for us when they come to Hong Kong, and they always come with 10-20 DVDs for us to watch!

I also have a lot of friends in China who just watch movies online...

OK, I don't mean to get too far off-topic, sorry for that.

Sometimes I think we should have some kind of rule like that here - the UK has tons of actors and yet many of them leave for the US and American movies, and these American movies then fill up our cinemas, and as a result the British movie industry is pretty small because it doesn't have much to work with. There is the occasional good movie (Children Of Men) but many are just cheap romantic comedies (Notting Hill, Love Actually, etc).

Don't want to get into a huge debate about this as the thread is about the "Warlords", so I'll just say this little bit and then not post about it again...

...but to make a long story short, I think that if the US banned the few Chinese movies that made it to our shores, there would be an uproar in China and a lot of people feeling victimized and saying the US was being unfair, or perhaps a bully.

I don't consider it fair to say that just because one nation's industry is stronger, the other nation can start using protectionist laws and rules to favor their industry, and then get upset if there is a reaction (although their won't be).

I agree. The potential for new CASTLE ideas is always a good thing. So its not so much that one likes a "guy" movie, we can call it "research."

This movie looks interesting.
I've seen a couple good movies coming out of China in recent years, I'll have to check the reviews for this one.
