Red Cliff (history based movie)

Post by JPinoy »

From director John Woo.

The film is about the Battle of the Red Cliff, around 208 AD between the Three Kingdoms. Battles on both land and (wide) rivers.

English trailer (with few scenes from John Woo's previous work)

Longer trailer with different scenes (and no previous J.W. movies).
In Chinese with English subtitles.

There are Kongming Lanterns (early hot air ballons) shown in the movie trailer. Albeit they weren't for manned flight, but for lighting up the battlefield sky at night.

Seems interesting. As long as the movie doesn't have all this ninja stuff, then I might, with a little hope, watch it. It reminds me of another movie I watched once, but I can't remember the name. It was about the Crusades. Oh well.

There's no "ninja" stuff. This is 3rd Century China, not 15th Century Feudal Japan...

Martial arts however is involved between some heros, note combat between the main characters. Afterall, how can you fight with weapons without martial training? These are trained soldiers, not peasant conscripts.

Looks very good. I sure hope it comes out here in the UK. Who is the lady in it. Some of the actors and actresses look familiar but I could not remember from where off the top of my head. Partially because the trailer moves so fast.

imdb page for Red Cliff which features a cast list. Indeed, this one features some pretty big names in Chinese and Asian cinema.

I'm willing to be Blue Head mean some of the more fantastic wu xia elements that often appear in Chinese films (read: extensive wire work).

This is a film I'm really looking forward to (although losing the promised Woo-Fat reunion did smart a bit), and everything I've seen seems to indicate Woo is going for a much more historical film rather than one that relies on fantasy elements, like Hero or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

That's what I was hoping. Some films have that , quote myself, "ninja stuff", which ruins it as it is always the hero who flips over a wall and stabs 2 guys in the process while throwing two knives into 5 guy's chests. See what I mean.

Thanks though. I'm now starting to look forward to this movie. :D

Enigma,

I had not even thought to look it up on IMDB. It does have a strong cast doesn't it! Looks like a great movie.

This looks excellent. John Woo is a good director from what I have seen of his films. I am definetly going to see this one.
