I'd say that Germany, Austria and France have the greatest castles.
I've been to england an the castle...was more like a palace...

I've visited just one French castle and...uhh In Germany and Austria I visited:
Burg Waldeck, Burg Lichtenstein, Hohenzollern Burg, Burg Teck, Zitadelle Spandau, Burg Hohenneufen, Burg Landsberg, Burg Hochosterwitz, Schloss Tübingen, Schloss Heidelberg! The german word Burg means castle, Schloss means sth like palace, Zitadelle means citadel.

And my favourit is the Austrian castle Hochosterwitz! It has got 12 or 14 gates (ohh no, I forgot  ), it is on a hill and it's huge! The interior contains very many weapons and armours. The castle got never occupied!

And I've seen very many other castles and palaces and ruins from far.

Don't forget the Teutons - Even though I visited a lot of castles around the world, Malbork in Poland is one of the best I saw!

Not being biased to others, but I think England has some of the greatest castles, with styles to compete with a majority of European castles, I should say of those in the British Isles influenced by the English too like Harlech.
I find French Castles intereting too, yet the English castles carry a similar design and flare, but with rugid battled hardened walls.

Hi

I understand that there must be a few portuguese users in this forum, but i would like to introduce the portuguese castles mainly because they are mostly from the IX to the XIII century and unlike most french and german castles still retain the original design.

My two favorites are Castelo de Guimarães and Castelo de Santa Maria da Feira. Monte-o-Mor o Velho has a huge castle. Palacio da Pena is in the same style as most french and german castles.

some of them can be found in here: http://www.360portugal.com/Menu_Castelos/index.html
other can be found here: http://castelosdeportugal.no.sapo.pt/
and here: http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anexo:List ... e_Portugal

i'm afraid that the sites are in portuguese, but it will give you folks the general idea of portuguese medieval fortifications.

hope you like it
