Richard Cœur de Leon. Richard th Lion Heart a good choice.
He was strong, tough and fought with his men, the enemy did'nt know what to think.
He never captured Jerusalem on the third crusade because he was clever enough to realise that once it was captured, there would not be enough men to defend it, just like after the first crusade. However he did hold on to Acre and Jaffa, he also secured Christian pilgrims safe passage to the Holy land.
If only he had not have died in 1199 :( then King John might never have started his evil  reign.
There can be no triumph without loss,
no victory without suffering,
no freedom without sacrifice.

My favorite monarch is D. Afonso Henriques. He was the first Portuguese King. His rule was from 1112 (Portucale count in the kingdom of Leon) 1143-1185 (Portuguese Kingdom). He is the patron of the Portuguese Army. In the battle of Ourique, Afonso Henriques is known to have defeated 5 moor kings.

He is considered a personal hero by me and most of the Portuguese People. Another hero but from roman times was Viriato.
