Popular Medieval Sail Styles?
Hi,
I was wondering (for CCCVII) what the predominant sail styles in medieval times were. I was leaning toward a lateen rigged boat(http://www.sail-home.com/boats/images/classLateen.jpg), but I didn't know if a Gaff rig would be more historically accurate.
Thanks,

Re: Popular Medieval Sail Syles?
Where? regions use different sails.
When? sail design changes alot over the medieval period.
Lateen sails are either a Mediterranean, especially Southern Mediteranean, occurrence or a late one.
This is of course a bit vague but with more info I can help more. If you just want reference to use during the medieval period anytime any place you are OK but depends what you are going for.

Re: Popular Medieval Sail Styles?
Sorry, I guess it wasn't very clear. The boat was going to be more of a sleek elven/forestmen design. I just thought a lateen rig would look better with the boat style. It will use this hull technique: http://www.flickr.com/photos/38779557@N ... otostream/

I think that'd work fine.... especially in a fantasy setting.

Re: Popular Medieval Sail Syles?
Are you sure you can handle sail syles?
Between plotting to kill you all and chasing balls of yarn, I also build MOCs

Sorry. I didn't realize that. Is "syles" a word that I can't handle?

I think the lateen sail there looks good for the ship. But how are you gonna connect a deck to that hull, and how are you gonna make it going straight along the edges?

The original builder does it, and he uses wedge plates on the ends. Is that what you meant by "keeping it straight on the sides"?
I also have a new question: Would this sailboat look okay in whit with an off-white sail?
Thanks,

Re: Popular Medieval Sail Styles?
Yeah, that was what i meant.
Ps. with off-white, do you mean a completely other colour, or just a slightly beige/tan white? Cause i think the last option may look pretty good.

Off-white. such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buff_(colour) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champagne_(color) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_latte
Which of those would be best for a sail color on a sleek, white boat?
Thanks,

Re: Popular Medieval Sail Styles?
Of some reason the link to the first one isn´t really working, and the second one looks a little bit too pink, so i think the last one will be best.
