I'd keep it lightweight, with lots of visibility. That leaves me with either a nasal helmet (or some variant of, such as Viking helmets with the guards around the eyes) or a kettle helmet.

A big, heavy helmet won't be of much use if you can't move around with it!

That's very true! If you can move around with it, though... ;)

I've just saw this thread, very interesting BTW :)
In battle, I think I would wear a islamic styled helmet, such as this:
http://art.thewalters.org/detail/14181/ ... ose-guard/
I gives a relativly good protection with good visibility.
And it also has a very nice design :)

Looks intimidating, like that of the elf guards in DOS, but I would worry that if you took a blow to the face the chain mail rings could get hammered into the skins and cause injury and possibly infection. It has happened to people wearing mail before, and if that happened to your face.... :o But it's a cool looking helmet nonetheless! :D

Better than the direct blow to the face, which would ensure there'd be an injury! :twitch:

I really woudn't like that to happen! Chainmail really had some problems, but, overall, I provided good defence against the weapons they had on that time.

Agreed, I would definitely wear chain mail on the body, as it looks way cooler than plate armor, and with some kind of leather padding underneath to cushion the blows and prevent that injury.

I would choose a close helmet; a bit heavy, but a lot of protection :) : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Close_helmet

Those helmets are pretty cool, and rather effective too!

I'd likely go with a morion: lightweight, wouldn't impare visibility, hearing, or movement, and with enough odd angles on it to deflect incoming blows.

The 15th century armet in my view is the best looking and also most effective. In the previous century the basinet was the best looking, especially with a decent surcoat to break up the mass of plate armour

Well, 15th century armour was created based on centuries and centuries of medieval helmet and armour design, so it makes sense that it would be better than the rest! Unfortunately for the bearers, that perfected armour came at the moment when firearms started being increasingly common... Crossbows were already a dangerous thing, but muskets and other early firearms didn't forgive.
And to come back to the topic, I'd go for a kettle helmet as well (as close as the WW1 Brodie helmet design as allowed by realism) with a thick chainmail hood!

I think I'd like this knight helmet the best:

I'd like it especially because of the flap-up visor style.
