Coat of Arms

Hello all,

I was going through some of my old forgotten stuff and found this:

It's not My familys Coat of Arms, but it was purchased at a yard sale many years ago for me....

Some time in the future I'm going to clean it (and its counter part, which is in alot worse shape) up a bit, the felt behind the eagle crest has started to disintegrate :shock:

. Not to mention the swords are a little beat up.

Well anyways I just thought I would share this with you guys..

You probablly shouldn't restore it, crests are considered a period relics from centuries past, it hinders the value if it is cleaned up, sadly

ok - after viewing the picture, i would say go ahead and clean it up. there isn't any actual coat on there. You have a blank achievement there.

Unless your families coat is all one color, and its just not painted...

I wonder: What family does have an own coat of arms at all? Only noble families got one.
Sure, I could go to a heraldician (Is there a name for somebody who is an expert for heraldic?), tell him my name and my family history and he would design a coat of arms for me. I know people who did that. But is that a true coat of arms? And for which purposes does a family these days need a coat of arms anyway?

A person who is an expert, and an official is a herald.

I don't know of any real need these days for a coat of arms, but who knows? maybe someone has a burning need for one of them like we have a burning need for Lego...

Well our family has our very own coat of arms. Its an old dutch one. But I am very proud to actually have one. Let me see if I can find it........................rats, can't find a picture. Anyway it has a red back ground and nine silver dimonds on it.

My family has it's own coat of arms. I don't have a picture but it's silver and black, has a bunch of mooses and a cool knight helmet and the word Sauviter.(anybody know what that means?)

Also. If you got that from a yard sale how much was it?

I too have a coat of arms, atlough I don't have a pic, it's beautiful(and by the way, some generic trees say that I MAY be from the Spanish and Portuguese royal famaly.

Yeah, according to them I have one, too.

Though I still doubt that every person with a surname like mine is from the same family and thus has the same coat of arms.

You know, a thought occurred to me, and if it doesn't apply to you don't worry about it.

Perhaps the reason so many Americans are fascinated with heraldry and coats of arms, and crests and all that are the sense of permanency one derives from it. For instance, if the family of Delaware can prove they were descended from John de la Ware who is listed in St. Georges roll, (Dated c1285. Painted, containing 677 shields) then there is a certain sense of familial history. When you think about how young our country truly is compared to other nations of the world, then you understand what I mean....
I can't speak for Europeans in this,

(understandably) nor even other Americans, but I do think it is an interesting thought.

Funny how I could change the red background on my Italian crest into a blue background and end up with a Welsh crest.

I've suspected that these are sort of arbitrarily assigned and have no basis in reality. Now that I've seen yours, I'm convinced that this is all BS. Oh well, it's still kinda neat.
