Well, I don't know about a coat of arms, but my mom's side of the family is strongly Scottish, and we have a family plaid. Buchanan Plaid, it's called.

Hmm, sadly my family doesn't have a coat of arms, but still I think it's interesting how shurguals is plaid, I would never have expected to see plaid on a person't crest. Oh well, that just shows how ignorant I was, am, and will be.

My two cents,

Actually, I should have said "tartan", not "plaid". It's just that when my family talks about the tartan, we say plaid, it's just a habit. Anyway, a Scottish tartan works kind of like heraldry, but it's not exactly the same. A clan could register a tartan, and that tartan would identify the wearer as a mamber of that clan. However, their were tartans for certain geographical areas as well; they weren't just for families. There are a few different versions of the Buchanan plaid, the one previously posted is the one originally registered to the Highland Society of London.

I have no idea if my family has a crest, since my great-grandparents changed our name when they came to America.

Any idea what the name was before they changed it?
Maybe you can find the crest on the internet.

My family is from Northern Ireland. We had a castle but it was destroyed a few centuries ago. the clan name was Ray. I havent been able to locate the coat of arms as yet (though). But most Coat of Arms and Knights Heraldry are recorded still in England. I cant remember the name of the website.

This is interesting. House of names has mine with the crecents set facing upward, not addorsed (facing away from each other) like the description from the New World book of Haights: "azure, a saltire with a mullet in chief and in base and two crecents addorsed in the flanks argent." Haight is one of those names that has half a dozen different spellings. I can't be sure this is mine since all paternal history past my great-grandfather is nonexistant, but it looks pretty darn cool.
