FOOD!!!

Postby Bluesecrets » Thu Feb 06, 2014 10:17 pm

Food?!? Food you say?! What is this crazy concept??? And daaaaaaaaang Blue you are making me hungry. Oh if there was any question about it...Blue is a pretty good cook/baker.

Anyway..to the topic...I am making some LOTR/Hobbit food right now...like literally right at this exact moment. And I wondered why we hadn't discussed food. We discuss it in chat ALL the time. Why? Food is the universal language...except when someone (Johan!!!) starts linking me to awful things like sheep's head or something that is nasty and makes me not want to think about food.

So having said that...I'm always making some kind of "nerdy" food...whether it is LOTR or Hobbit or Harry Potter or the like. I've even made this medieval pie that had 12 eggs in it and steak with saffron and all kinds of interesting stuff.

Got any medieval foods you want to share or discuss?

Here is a LOTR/Hobbit recipe collection:

And for the record...if you go to Universal and are getting butterbeer...go frozen.

So Blue, out of that list of recipes what have you made? What tastes good?

I've always thought the idea of mutton sounds fantastic (Even though the word sounds gross). I've always assumed mutton was like a turkey leg of sorts, but I must confess, I have never had "genuine," honest-to-goodness mutton.

Curt has compiled quite a list as well. Roast corn... mmmm, that sounds so tasty.

Seems like medieval food has to incorporate potatoes somewhere. Cheap, quite easy to grow, very necessary for the survival of peasants. Hmm... I just wonder how many different ways they got creative with potatoes. You can only eat the same food for days in a row without getting ill on it, right?

Very interesting topic Blue.

Well I just made the Po-Tay-To Onion Soup. It's pretty good. The mulled cider is good. I'm making more tomorrow, so I'll let you know.

I have made a lot more Harry Potter recipes. Butterbeer is fabulous. And I even had a recipe that made brussel sprouts taste good.

Well, not to be the party crasher but if we're thinking European medieval, things like potatoes*, turkeys or corn were unheard of (all being American in origin). Unfortunately I'm not quite an expert in this field though, so I can't give you much else to have instead (oh, I suppose I could dig up this weird song that a byzantine monk wrote of all the food that was in his monastery, but I have no idea where I have that one stored).

When it comes to HP and LOTR it's of course quite different. I also have a Butterbeer recipe that I dearly love. That list of LOTR recipes sure is charming, never seen that before. I wonder how much in common it has with Tolkien's idea of what their food and drink tasted like though. In particular I've always had a hard time imagining what these elven foodstuffs were like, since most of the descriptions are just that it's incredible, oh yea, but in what way I wonder?

*Actually bringing potatoes to Europe was quite a controversial affair. Some of course realized that it was very good and useful, while others thought it would make farmers little more than animals (living of potatoes, the horror!). It was a very big deal in England and Ireland at least. I read an article on that a few years ago, I'll see if I can dig it up.

Now i tried to post this yesterday but it wouldnt take.
So trying again. What time period an what location are we wanting too talk about?

Corn, turkey, etc... were and are not native to europe. They didnt come about till mid 1500's early 1600's. However phesant, rabbits, deer, boar were the main meats avaliable in england at the time of the early midevil era in england. So in order to know what to talk about we need a time reference.

The reason I listed corn, turkey, potatos was because I was referenceing Rennasance england, which is middle 1600's. So to further delve in this discussion, when do we wanr to talk about.

I don't own the book myself, but A Feast of Ice and Fire apparently has a lot of great recipes from A Song Of Ice And Fire.

Yes, these Medieval cookbooks sure have some great, mouth-watering recipes in them! I may try some, actually :)
On a slight tangent, I had venison the other day (not for the first time, though), and it was very good! That's another tasty food from the 'castle' era!

What now then, Sheep's head is a really old dish served for centuries, It's a fine art crafting one as each head takes days to prepare and cook to perfection.
On another note, Old Viking dishes are great meals that often give off a "oldy" feel, so I'd recommend anyone interested to check some of those out, here's a nifty webpage.
