G2- Sorry, but I recently discovered that a whole series of old floppy disks I had my college stuff on have been corrupted. Sadly, the file is gone.

Blue Knight- I agree with your sentiments in general terms. All I was trying to do was throw up a strawman for classifying the multitude of varying fortifications that mankind has built.

That is why I tried to stay away from what a fortification looks like as a defining term. I tried to denote it by function, rather than form.

But to your point, perhaps I need to find another term for what I called a "Castle". In essense, all of these- a mott & bailey, a keep, a 'castle' and a fortress could all be considered castles. And selecting one of them to carry the name castle could be divisive.

Because I did forget Manor/Palace as well. Often these are considered castles in name.

Hey, I'm glad this thread was pulled back up.

I know there are many other specifics as to the types and all, but this is a great short, concise explination of varying kinds of "castles." I'm sure it's very useful to those who don't have a huge background of castle knowledge. I know I'll 'keep' (pun deffinately intended) this in mind while building my MOCs.

A bit of a side note:

I'm sure someone could make mini models to demonstrate the basic ideas of each structure down. I'll try, but I have a bunch of homework.

Sadly, my lego universe has suffered a massive upheaval as of late.

There is this 7 year old tornado wandering about my house who recently discovered the joys of lego. My well ordered and maintained castle figures and bricks have become hundreds of bizarre and grotesque creations that only a young child's mind can conceive as 'cool'.

I love them all, and watching him build has been far more entertaining than doing it myself lately.
