Names of ships

Discussion of topics concerning life in the middle ages around the world, including architecture, history, and warfare.

Postby Jacob C. » Wed Aug 10, 2005 5:19 pm

i meant like kinds of ships not names of ships, such as: Galleon, Man of war. Those are almost the only ones i know

Sorry, I think we all misinterpreted your originial post.

Here's some different types of ships....

Man-of-War - an armored ship that is equipped with weapons and is used in war (basically any ship who's sole purpose is to wage war)
Also referred to as "Ship of the line."

Galleon - a large three-masted sailing ship used especially by the Spanish between the 15th and 18th centuries

Schooner - a fast sailing ship with at least two masts and with sails set lengthwise fore-and-aft

Carrack
Caravel
Galleon
Race-Built Galleon
Bilander
Sloop
Cutter
Brig
Brigantiine
Bark
Barkentine
Ketch
Snow
Schooner
Lugger
Dogger
Fluyt
Pink
Xebec
Pinnance
Corvette
Frigate
Ship-of-the-Line

Sorry - I wouldn't have made the smart-alek remark earlier in this thread if I had realized no one was going to answer the question.

The first two are obsolete very early in the pirate period. The race-built galleon is basically a galleon without the tall "castles" (english vs. spanish armada, for example). Most of the others are various small to medium merchant designs that might get be prey or predator. Many of them are slight variations in sail layout - you couldn't tell be the hull alone. Frigates wouldn't be pirate vessels, but ship-rigged (three masts, square sails on each mast) merchantmen might be upgunned to an equivalent of such. A ship of the line wouldn't be bothered with chasing pirates.

LOL!

That's too funny.

Well, anyway, I really got a lot of value from those links, both the names and the ship types. I never knew some of those resources were out there!

On a sour note, it was sad to hear about the Pirates forum. :( I thought for sure that was going to be pretty hot. I'd love to hear an update if it ever comes back to life.
