MocPage: Should I stay or should I go ?

The years are passing and it seems mocpage is less popular every year  I love this site. It is where I discovered the lego online community but the bugs and the desaffection of many great builders makes the site less and less attractive for an AFOL like me :?

I am wondering if I will continue to post my creation there or just use my flickr account. It is not really time consuming to put it on MocPage but it is not really rewarding in terms of visibility since a majority of AFOL have moved to flickr a long time ago. And nostalgia is not a reason to stay somewhere.

And you: Do you still have a MocPage account ? Are you an active member ?

I want to have your input on this.

Thanks

Good question!

I have a page there but I have completely neglected it in favor of Flickr. Just like I have done with Brickshelf. Why? MocPages...just takes SO long to load that I really don't find myself enjoying it. But to be honest, the latest upgrade to Flickr doesn't have me singing it's praises either.

So stay or go? I guess that is a personal choice based on if you have friends there.

I hardly ever look at MOCpages any more. The only thing I really follow there are the two major contests - MOColympics and the MOCathalon. If those migrated over to Flickr or some other service, I'd probably just delete my bookmark.

Well, I personally will always prefer MOCpages. That is where I started, have grown in building skills, met new people and friends, and have gotten more-or-less well known. Even though MOCpages takes longer to post a creation, I prefer it because in one post, you can have as many picture as you want. On flickr, that just clutters your photostream, since every picture is a post by itself.

I do like flickr as well, since it is so quick and easy, but I wouldn't leave MOCpages, it is a great community, and there are still tons of great people building and posting on there, for instance, Luke Watkins, Simon Liu (he just joined earlier this year for the MocAthalon), Blake Baer, Sean and Steph Mayo, Legonardo, etc. :)

Yes, I still have a MOCpages account. I am active in the sense that I compete in contests, judge contests, comment on other people's creations, find new great builder's, etc. I just don't post a lot in groups, like I used to anymore (mostly because I am very busy now). :)

I hope that you don't leave MOCpages, you are a fantastic builder, it would great to still have you on the site.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as Bruce, I only ever check in at MOCpages during the MOColyimpics and MOCathalon.
I do have an account there, but I have yet to post any of my builds or even comment on other people's builds.

Honestly, I love the idea of MocPages, that it being a site completely devoted to LEGO creations. I had an account there at the beginning of 2009, but I can't remember the last time I actually logged in. I think that's where it excels over Flickr, in that it is a purely LEGO fansite, involving nothing more than LEGO. While Flickr is great for sharing images and does have the majority of the LEGO community using it for photo sharing, I always like the idea of a site run by AFOLs for FOLs.

As others have stated, though, MocPages takes an unbelievable long time to load each creation. If, somehow, this issue was worked around and the site was made more accessible/user friendly, I'm sure there would be a mass migration (or remigration?) to MocPages, considering how recent changes on Flickr have been getting sour public reception.

Agreed, that would be great if we can get them back to MOCpages. But you forgot the main reason it seems why everybody moved to flickr, MOCpages tends to crash quite a lot! :? That is one of the main reasons I see lots of people move to flickr (I have never seen that crash),

I have two other thoughts about why people have moved:
1) it is maybe an age thing
2) MOCpages takes so long to load that while you wait for one page to load you could make a whole meal from scratch and then eat it..and maybe your page will finally load. Sure that is an exaggeration, but how accurate is it? Actually closer than truth than fiction.

I think MOCpages has become saturated with young teenagers posting badly photographed builds, as the more "serious" FOLs are choosing other sites because MOCpages is not as stable as these other sites. It's a shame really, I always enjoyed MOCpages system of creating a page where you can so easilly post lots of pictures of your MOCs with a long description and arrange it any way you want.
It's just so slow and buggy these days that half the time I don't bother looking at it either, and I guess that goes for a lot of people.

I have always used MOCpages, and have yet to give flickr a try. I do agree that it might be an age thing, but could it be the other way perhaps younger builders prefer flicker over MOCpages? I guess I will keep using Mocpages and check these events that you guys mentioned, but also consider signing up with flicker as it sounds easier and less time consuming.
