GIMP Editing Help

Post by Sir Erathor »

OK guys, I need your help here! When I've photographed my MOC I want to be able to cut out the image and give it a white background, using GIMP. I use the 'Foreground Select Tool' to select all of the MOC, which turns purple. It's now that I get stuck. What do I do to colour the non-selected part white, whilst leaving the MOC as it should be?

Thanks,
~Ieuan

Alright, once you have the moc selected (that's what the purple stuff is) right-click within the selection and click on invert selection this should make it so then the area around the selection is getting edited, once you have that, all you have to do is use the paint bucket tool to paint the area white.
note: this is for an american computer so it might be different for you, but hopefully it'll work

Or, instead of paint bucket, you can delete the background entirely. Another option if you've shot it on a white piece of poster board and just want to lighten/brighten it up a bit, you can use the brightness/contrast sliders to do that.

Thanks for the help guys! I finally managed to get it to work, by using the lasso tool to cut it out and then filling in the background, then touching up the edges with the paintbrush. Here's the pic (I tried it out on a random figure):

I know the editing's not great, but I did this very quickly, in a spare five minutes!

Nice job. I would use the brightness tool to lighten up the fig (used with contrast tool), and then you'll be an expert!

I know this is an older thread, but I just started into GIMP today.

Here is a picture of two figs I edited using gimp. I lowered the brightness and raised the contrast and I think they turned out good.

I do have other questions though? How does one add text? Is there a way to save the photograph to make it smaller (in byte size)? The original photo was about 3 mb. After editing it came to 15mb.

Finally, is there a tutorial somewhere (in English, Turkish or German) that anyone knows about? I sure would like to find one to help me out!

Thanks!

I don't think I can answer your questions, SSchmidt, and I too want to know how to add text.

To reduce file size, you can do a couple of things.
1 - Reduce the actual image dimensions. Use "Image > Scale Image" and then reduce to an appropriate size. I'd suggest the smallest you want to go is 800x600 or so. Probably 1200x800 is a little better if people are going to want to zoom in for a better look at details (particularly applicable to large MOCs)

2 - Reduce the quality of the image. Use "File > Export" and save your file in the desired format. A box then pops up that has a "Quality" slider that defaults at 95%, I think. You can drop this down to as low as 50% in some cases, which will reduce the file size dramatically.

Adding text:
Use "Tools > Text" and drag a box for your text to go into. Click inside the box and start typing. You can edit font style, color, and size easily using the text tool options. This creates a body of text in a new layer, so after deselecting it, you can drag it around and reposition, resize, etc using the various tools available in GIMP

Tutorials:
There was a pictorial walk through offered by Hrvoje back in 2011 that can get you started on doing white backgrounds: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=477895
Otherwise, try searching for "GIMP Tutorial" or GIMP "Walkthrough" on Youtube and you'll come across several helpful videos, including a "GIMP 101" series that is at least 3 videos long that will take you through some of the basics.

I hope that helps!

Thanks AK, that helped a bunch. I watched all the videos in the 101 series, and they were very informative and helpful. I feel like I can tackle pictures now!
