If you upload your images to BrickShelf they make the thumbnails for you. The small images you see in the gallery pages are fully functional images, too, and you can use them as thumbnails everywhere in the net, like Classic-Castle. Just rightclick on the small BrickShelf thumbnail, chose "properties" -> "URL" -> mark complete URL -> copy complete URL -> paste the URL just like you would do with the URL of a big picture as well.

If you are using a Mac, which is unlikely, I would recommend Graphic Converter. It will do all of the basic image processing you need without the unnecessary complexity of Photoshop or GIMP. It's also free. I would imagine that something similar (and free) is available for Windows.
