Good lunk on your venture, conductorjoe. I probably won't be visiting your site as it's not specifically geared toward me, but I think you've targeted a niche that hasn't been covered before.

My one gripe is with the name iBricks. Makes me think Apple Inc has released a LEGO clone brand.

A YALF, as I have coined the term, refers to a non-specific general LEGO forum created by a single person that, consiously or unconsciously, wants it to be LUGNET - ie all things LEGO.

If iBricks had been announced as a community effort of the XYZ Fans then it would not be a YALF and I would not have posted the question.

Honestly, every new forum starts out as a just another LEGO forum. This includes CC. Simply put, if the forum finds an audience, then it has value to someone. Briefly looking over at iBricks, it looks to me as though that forum actually has alot of traffic in the past 3 months. Obviously, this forum has found an audience in younger FOLs.

And honestly, in today's environment, is LUGNET really that accessable to a younger audience. Its elitism even puts off alot of adult fans. I don't think many fans today are looking to create another LUGNET.

Safe and friendly? Are you implying that other Lego websites are not safe or friendly? Your website displays it like some sort of award.

Its like how the CC banner says,"The Source For All Your Lego Castle Needs"? Are we really? No, occasionally I have to go somewhere to buy actual bricks.

Or how Lugnet used to say it was the Friendliest Place on the Internet. Was it? Not always.

Almost every forum out there has something like this in its banner. Its not a big deal.

Just a gentle personal (as opposed to some CC admin officialdom) request that we not spend a lot of time debating the merits of a particular other forum. We're all part of a big community, and if some people find they enjoy a particular forum, more power to them.

That said, Tedward does raise an interesting discussion on the proliferation of LEGO forums. I wrote a fairly long essay on LEGO forums a while ago.

I tend to agree with Chairman Mao - "Let a thousand flowers bloom." Back in the day all we had was the alt.toys.lego Usenet group, then Lugnet, now a myriad of sites. When new forums spring up, some will find an audience and become an important part of the community (CC, Classic-Space, Eurobricks), others will not and will die off (Dragonhall, Zerostuds, maybe the Legofan forums).

I find this all really disappointing. I am a member of iBricks, just as I am a member of many other LEGO sites and forums. I have never encountered any hostility or negativity from any of the members both on and of the forum. I can only speak for myself, but I have had some religious discussions with at least a couple members (off the forums), and it was all very civil and mature. If there's no malicious intentions involved I really can't see any problems arising, from my point of view.

It may be another "YALF" (Congrats on a new term, Ted!) but I think it has potential. I know the administrator/owner personally, and he's both talented & enthusiastic...and a great guy. It's really sad that when a small, new and younger forum pops up and it has to be villanized by a few individuals for no apparent gain.

iBricks may not have found it's place in the LEGO community yet, nor does it involve the best builders or the most mature members. It is, in my opinion, a place where the AFOL's of the future may be residing, and I think it's important to encourage that. When I first entered the LEGO community I was far less mature than many of the members there of equal age.

I'm not saying the said events did or didn't happen but as Bruce said, we're all part of a community - We all love LEGO. Why can't we all work towards building a more cohesive & friendly community, than work towards further separating it?

I don't have a problem with YALFs simply because I don't frequent them. I was ignoring iBricks until I was alerted to a thread for posting prayers which included people praying for someone to be 'saved'. Now that, in my opinion, is a pretty strong suggestion that the forum is strongly biased towards Christianity of a certain variety. I very much doubt a non-Christian would find that thread 'Safe and Friendly' nor a forum that hosts it. That is not a problem per se but it is a problem when the forum does not advertise the fact.

My suggestion would be that the forum identify itself openly as Christian and be done with it. That has the added advantage of positioning itself in a new niche which may keep the YALFers happy

Anyway, my two cents.

I see exactly what you mean, and in some ways I agree. What I'm worried about is that we'll end up with dozens of generic, lackluster forums scattered around the web, with little or no connection between them or their members. A few solid forums with a single, large community shared between them is worth a lot more than a dozen random forums with nothing in common other than their subject, IMO.

I've so far resisted posting in this thread, but I really can't take it any more. This arguing is rediculous. CC is being associated with this as it has filtered thoguh several LEGO forums and blogs by now.

Hey man, I never wanted this to make it over here at all. I was actually hoping this thread would die, but since so many people keeping replying and mentioning things, it's better that people know the truth. Sure you can say it's uncalled for, and I wouldn't have made that post if I didn't feel they deserve it in every way.

I do hope you actually read the screenshots I took the time to compile. I can't see how anyone would side with people like that, but that's just me...

P.S: I'm going to come off as a megablocks-hole for this, I know that. but this is my opinion and I felt they deserved the smack they got.
