Weekly Set Review: King Leo
I still don't own this set, I don't want any more Leos and I've actually got more than enough kettle-helmet-dudes.
If you wanted to build an army, this would be a nice set for it - and the Leo's could make good royal troops or castle guard or something.
I guess I'd give it a 6/10 for that.
Funny, KK1 still seems like one of the newer lines to me, but I realized after reading some of the other posts... it's not!

I never did own this set but I owned King Leos Castle (which I lost in a flood). Like everybody else is saying, the soldier is the best part about this set.

Agree with this observation.TwoTonic Knight wrote:
The standard complaint about making what should be an uncommon figure common. Putting that aside, I'm quite happy swapping out the crown for a real helmet. The king makes a fine looking crossbowman
Maybe it should have been that the castle crowns should have been uncommon not both the kings torso and crown.
I much preferred this set then the 1996 stand alone King set:

Because of the additional Richard figure this set was my Army builder set of choice for KK1. It was a great source of mounted knights and I too armed the extra King Leos (minus crowns) with crossbows, they were very common in 2000.
Typical Lego cliché, those good KK1 knights all ended up having white horses.

I purchased this set but there were other sets like the defense archer that were better for army building. The figure design is excellent, along with the others of KK1. Doesn't hurt to have an extra Royal figure. Nice set. 10/10. The last (imo) of the Great Lion factions, I would hope we see them again reborn.

Ah, one of the best army builder sets of the line. No it didn't come with a vast array of weapons and I concede that the crown becomes a bit useless as you acquire 50+ of them, BUT both knight torso, leg and head combos work well for building an army. $5.00 was the average price in 2000 and you got the two aforementioned figures, a small weapons assortment, a white steed with saddle (and the back-bricks) and the incredibly odd by itself Imperial Outhouse. Luckily LEGO was overproducing these sets and the clearance prices I snapped them up at ran between $1-3 USD each. I ended up with a few score. LEGO S@H and Bricklink provided weapons, helms and plain smileys for a true neo-lion knight army.
Long live King Leo... or at least his legs and torso.
8/10!

Anyone else have trouble building that tower, due to the lack of instructions? No? I must be lame....

This set looks dumb, but I must sadly admit that I would have bought it if I was collecting at the time.

The king would be a lot better if he came with a cape and plume. Though how many crowns do we need? The soldier is pretty nice.

I like this set it has two nice figs. (by the way I call the king nice because if you swap out his crown and his head with a helm and a another face he looks like a half way desent fig) the tower can be used for anything realy. the kk1 figs are my favoret figs in the history of lego. 8/10 for now and 7/10 back then
