Army Builder or Not?

Post by Horak the Great »

Hi there folks,

Just curious about how people at CC feel about army building... Not sure where this poll belongs... I figured MOC would be the proper place. I guess this question is contingent upon an understanding what constitutes an Army. For me, those who possess 20 or more of the same minifigs, but not necessarily have more than one faction, would mean that he or she is an army builder.

Of course I am! One of the main reasons I build lego is to gather a large horde of men and just stare at them all lined up for hours! I dunno if anyone else does this but to me it just looks so awsome to see an army of lego men. Its like in the LOTR films when the armies are about to clash and you see how many men there are you get this extreme adrenalin rush. You just want to shout YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! THAT IS SO COOL!! Ok so maybey I let my true self out a little too much.

I'm kinda weird because I love the minifigure in general but more individually. Massive armies always seemed pointless (no one around here to Brikwar to death) and I can give them more custom attention individually.

Well it is nice to have a large collection of Lego men, (a castle looks kinda drab without them), but if they came in minifig packs, then they might be appealing to me. Unfortunately as a teenager without a job, the sets with lots of castle minifigs cost way too much for me.

Army building seems to satisfy the urge of collecting soldiers (army men). As a small child I had an assortment of the cheap plastic army-men that most boys have, and Lego army building feels that void. Buying minifigs in bulk is such a rewarding pastime, as I think it makes up for not having enough minifigs as a child.

I am an army builder, although my armies are all between 10 - 20 guys each, and slowly growing. The old minifigs just cost so much. 3-4 buck on Bricklink, it's just hard to buy lots of them.

According to your definition, I am an army builder. So, I voted 'yes'. But, the funny thing is that I have never considered myself one before. I have always thought of the army builders as having factions that numbered in the 100s and I try to keep mine around 25 or so. Although my Vikings are an exception to that. Thanks to the Viking Chess Set and an awesome sale last week at the Lego Store, they took off on me and now number around fifty.

By your definition, I probably fit the description of an army builder. I have a large assortment of classic minifigs, which could easily be arranged into a decent standing army, however this is not (nor will it ever be) my main focus.

Of course, an army is nothing without a suitable fortress, citidel or castle to inhabit.

I'm an army builder.
My largest army consists of around 30 of my custom Goblin figures. I need to spend some time and amass the army to around 100, I have all the parts, I'm just lazy when it comes to brassoing and decalling 70 figures. :P

I have also been trying to get my paws on more and more official castle figures as of late, only problem is that it's expensive.

I am most definately a builder - I have at least 5 of all the major minifig packs of the cc era - 6102, 6103, 6103 and 6105 (yes, both 6103's).

Mainly I find that new era of minifig heads (ones that are not too cartoony are great for providing differentiation to the old armies, and the old smileys are great to take away the monotony of the newer armies.

I never actually had that many figures as a kid, but recently aquired the above lot (as an unadvertised bonus) on a large auction that I won, along with around 30 baseplates that I wasn't made aware of.

I still have problems however where I will post men in every nook and cranny, and then run out to have any standing defence - though I have taken to merging factions (as I will never use more then 3 factions in a model anyway) to build up their numbers.

As most people said - By your definition, I am. But I don't consider myself an army builder, and have little interest it. Figures lined up on baseplates, or sitting around with nothing to do are rather pointless in my opinion.

I would like to have enough figures to fully populate my models, though - Ideally, this would be somewhere upwards of 30 figures or so, depending on the model. Right now I have maybe 20 Shadow Knights, and 25 Black Falcons. I'd like to have enough figs to be useful, but I have no interest in excess amounts.

I would have to admit that I too have a small passion in watching multiple factions ally together to fight it out. Most of my Castle MOCs have been built to accustom large armies at war. Once its set up, I cant help but gaze at it for a while, mow the lawn, wash the dishes and then gaze at it again for a while, wash my clothes and Iron, then have another little gaze for a while. You could probably call me a Daydreamer...................

Cheers

Following your definition I'm an armybuilder. The most of my Minifigs comes with the sets. From the newer Minifigs I bought some armies when I have the chance to get them cheap.
I love Minifigs, but mainly I use them to bring life into my MOCs. A few years ago I wantetd to get an army/faction (between 50-100 men) for every shield-design Lego released. But If you look at the last year and the high count of different shields... Now I only take the Minifigs from the sets and every few years I build all on a baseplate and have my pleasure with watching at them.

Although I have several factions that are above 20 figs, it's more of a effect of my real LEGO activity, set collection. If you collect all the sets, your figs turn to armies quickly.

I voted "no", though, because that is just a side-effect.
