Post by E of Alshire »

I know Damien has sont this to his sword hilts and handles- can anyone offer advice on using a pin to connect small peices, making a sturdier connection than glue?

Thanks

What kind of advice do you need?
Forge not works of art but swords of death, for therein lies great art.

I use a pin vise with a pin drill bit, you can find them at any hobby shop. I then use the appropriate thickness for copper wire to do the pinning. As for what type of glue to use, that really depends on what you like. Plastic Cement is a hit or miss with me as I am still looking for the perfect glue.

To do the pinning itself, well... you take 1 piece drill a hole, take another drill a hole, cover the wire piece in glue, and join the 3.Click here for my pieces using the pinning technique.

Max pretty much cleared it up- I was just in the dark on the whole process. I didn't know where to start. If you've got anything to add, please do.

I use gel-type super glue. Regular super-glue is too brittle and doesn't fill gaps. You can use any other number rof types of cement, you just have to wait forever (or forever and a day).

I can vouch for the super glue gel also. I have had great success with it, both with Lego and other applications.

For my "I need it glued now!" super glue, I do use a gel-type super glue, but I still get the oxidation. It's ok if I'm going to paint the piece, but if I'm not, I can't seem to clean it enough. The white power keeps coming. :(

Isn't that kind of racsist?
But back on topic, I really have found no glue that really works. So I use the fastest drying glue I know: hot glue gun. It's not the strongest, but it gets the job done :P !

I use Elmer's Instant (Precision) Krazy Glue. It's amazing stuff. I actually just made a new sword mod and the grip went on a bit angled. I was completely unable to pull the grip back off to try again. I held the grip between my fingers and attempted to rotate the blade with my free hand, in order to crack the glue seal, but it didn't work.

That's a strong hold.

And to point a fact, my sword mods get pretty beaten up, thrown around, and tossed into a baggie in a bin with other LEGO parts when I'm not using them, and I've never had one break.

Wow, thanks for the info :D ! I think I'll go and get some Krazy glue soon, seeing as I haven't tried it.
