Lego Podcasts
Lego Podcasts
Is thier such a thing? Either created by TLG or us? It would be pretty cool having like a CCPodcast wouldn't it. We could like discuss sets or recent MOCs, contests and upcoming sets. What do you guys think?

Well, there are (or were) some Bionicle ones on BZP, and then there's also Bricks in my Pocket. I don't know about any others.

Yeah but I'm thinking more about just building techniques and models. A more fun for everyone kind of thing. So what kind of podcast is Bricks in My Pockets? Also my favorite podcast, a Harry Pottercast, Mugglecast is free so I'd be really interested in a free one.

Why, when you have articles that were written up for your pleasure to explain such things, you just have to be willing enough to look for them. I know CC has quite a few and mechahub.com has some as well.ZIGGY! wrote:Yeah but I'm thinking more about just building techniques and models.
Besides, can you imagine: "And now connect the half pin to the 1x1 technic brick. After that youblahblahblah" It'd be easier to just build instead of researching the part names so you can understand what they're saying.

Hey,
If you go on itunes and search the podcasts for "lego" you'll get a few. Bricks in my Pocket was the first one that I know of, but they seem to be off line (presumably until the Legofan revamp is finished?). You should check BrickNebula, though it seems they haven't posted new episodes in months.

Allright, my second question maybe wasn't so clear. What do you guys think of a CCpodcast? Discussing recent MOCs and techniques, not how-tos more of a discussion on ups and downs etc. Discussing sets like a live Weekly set review, discussing upcoming stuff like this summer and beyond. What do you think of it?

Interesting timing... I'm in the middle of making another podcast right now.
Anyway, this isn't a bad idea, although it would face a few obsticles.
CW made a few (2) podcasts (we called castle-casts ) a while ago that was meant to focus on events on forums/blogs and how to write a good LEGO story.
However, where CW can write about how to write a good story, I think CC would face a bigger obsticle in talking about how to make a good MOC/Vig. Not to say that it wouldn't be possible, but it would be a bit difficult to describe pieces and arrangements, IMO.
Other problems CC would face relate to editing... for example, my voice sounded strange and squeaky on the audio file, which wasn't a huge deal, but not really a wonderful thing. Also, one has to learn how to use the software (such as audacity) and hardware, and where to get filler music without breaking the law.
Then, one has to learn how to upload and manage their podcasts, and that can be suprisingly complex. Ourmedia, the site that hosts audio files for free, has some glitches with it's uploading software (or did).
Finally, because all of the research, recording and editing takes time, it's hard to do this kind of thing on a consistent basis. CC would have to get some dedicated folks on board. CW did 2, as I said, and until recently hadn't done anything.

Well, if anyone is using a Mac, like me (not volunteering...), very good quality software is built right in; for recording voices and making music. In fact, the music making software (Garageband) has an easy to use podcast-making feature. (BTW, I'm not trying to advertise Macs here.)ottoatm wrote:Other problems CC would face relate to editing... for example, my voice sounded strange and squeaky on the audio file, which wasn't a huge deal, but not really a wonderful thing. Anyway, on topic, I'm not sure a CC podcast would be all that good of an idea... I mean, I don't think there'd be that much to talk about. But that's just my opinion.

You might be right, unless it was a video podcast showing building techniques, it would be a little hard to find content.

I personally disagree, as I (think) I've said, the topics would be more discussing and help not a step by step (Nerd voice) "Uuum so now take the jumper plate and..." Discussion of recent MOCs (Izzo's dragons would be a good topic), discussion of a small technique (Wunztwice's new cross archer slit) and sets new and old. Additionaly most shows have shownotes, in them can be references. Furthermore while most of this does happen on the forums there is something (I find) enjoyable about hearing them live (or recording but living, you know) and discussed good naturedly instead of HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ~ZIGGY-the end.

I've just never found non-musical podcasts especially appealing. If I'm working or watching TV, I can't listen to podcasts like BimP, and if I'm building, I'd rather listen to music. I think the key thing for me is that podcasts aren't scannable the way blog posts or forums are, and I don't have time to listen through consistently. (Besides, my iPod is full and I was running out of hard drive space on my Mac so I stopped downloading them. )
Nothing against podcasts in general or the great ones I *have* listened to (I do recommend both BimP and BrickNebula if you have the time) -- just my personal opinion based on my own time and resource constraints.

Hey,
I used to always listen to the BimPcast on my computer while surfing Brickshelf and checking the forums. Since Steven posted show-notes with links to the things he was discussing I could kind of follow along with the MOCs he was discussing.

I listen to a lot of podcasts, since I spend hours or even days at a time sitting in front of the computer when I've got a painting deadline to hit. I'd love to have more Lego podcasts to add to the mix. I even thought about trying to make one of my own, but I think there are clauses in my contract that prevent it somehow.
One of the nice thing about podcasts is that they allow you to mix media - an audio podcast would be good for news and events, but it's just as easy to slip video clips or graphics into the feed when you want to show off a cool model or technique. And I think PDFs as well - BimPCast put whole issues of BrickJournal in the feed in the past, if I remember right.
Finding filler music that's free to play in podcasts is no trouble at all - there's piles of it on the podsafe music network at http://music.podshow.com/ .
