Weekly Set Review: 5138 Castle Equipment

Postby architect » Sun Apr 29, 2007 9:43 pm

Join the weekly Classic Castle set review discussion. Please post your opinions on the set play ability, piece selection, design, etc. Which sets stand up to our catapult of critique and which ones crumble in shame!

This week’s set is 5138 Castle Equipment.

5138 Castle Equipment was released in 1994. It contains various accessories for the Wolfpack, Black Knights, and Dragon Masters. This pack is very similar to 5059 Castle Equipment which was released in 1993.

I love this pack, but yet it still brings memories of incredible annoyance to me. Back when I first saw it, I wanted to get it for the grey Euro armor. However, by the time my parents finally agreed, and I sent off the money, TLG had run out, or something like that. They sent me some other kind of accesory pack to make up for it, but it had no Euro armor. Besides the armor, I like this set because every single piece is useful.

10/10

I'm seriously thinking of shelling out $40 to buy one of these MISB on Bricklink, if only for the white Dragon plumes...

Ever since I first saw them, oh, how I longed for them...

There's some good selection here. I'd buy it for the shields and Euro armor, but I can't say no to anything else there. :D

You might try checking Bricklink first, if you only want the White Dragon plumes. They will probably be less they 40 dollars by themselves.

Nice selection of parts. Hardly anything in there that is unusuable (except maybe those flame pieces, which I have hundreds of). I wish Lego would make something similar again... though leave out the spears (for some reason I have way too way  )

This pack is loaded with Castle essentials. I love it. Wish I had been smart enough to realize how good these things are. The white dragon plumes are very rare and it's great that this is included. I don't use white plumes with my Dragon Masters and Black Knights, but I'm sure a lot of you do. I also like how it includes 3 shields, you can never have too many shields.

Quite possibly one of the best accessory packs ever!!! I would shell out tons of dough for these if they were released today. Six shields, three helms (2 of which I really like) a hood, bow and quiver, two swords, euro armor, plumes AND more! This is huge money right here I don't know whay TLG doesn't sell these any more I would think they would sell faster than the preverbial hotcake.

I can't find anything particularly bad about this "set." The only slight annoyance with me is the lack of a visor/visored helm, but with a pack this good I can't complain.

I'm just drooling now, so I should move on...

By far my most favorite accesory pack. I usually don't comment on these reviews but this one is so awsome I just had to. My favorite pieces are the grey helms, very rare.

This is a set that I would have said was so-so when it came out. In fact I did. I thought (and still do) that it needed a pitchfork, and a visored helmet to go with the armor. In retrospect, it's not a bad set at all. On balance my original criticism stands. $40 really! One could by the peices for less separately I would think. I didn't buy any but I could cobble together many of these, as I suspect most of us could.

That said, it does tend to bring back many fond memories.

Hello!

This accessory pack comes with great parts. And I don’t own it.

When the accessory packs were out I wasn't into castle. If they were out now, I would go buy 5 of these.

Mannnnn, why couldn't I have been born earlier! Dang, this is cool- grey helmets and armour, good accessories... Much better than the most recent one they had during the KK1 vs Bulls, even if it did come with a skellie... Cool stuff, 9 and a half/10 because theres no knight's helm and visor.

Yep it were cool, but I never felt compelled to buy on through S@H simply because it had the wrong arrangement of bits for my needs. My Castle collection was rather small back in the day...

At the time those wand/hat/beard combos were EVERYWHERE due to the fact that Majisto was the leader of the Dragon Masters and in nearly all the sets for that faction.

Personally I never got on the Wolf Pack bandwagon, to me they seemed rather too thugish to be so organized without a clear leader.

Finally what really upset me about this set was that while it had the plate armor, it had no proper matching helm to go with it. I had missed out on sets with the Black Knights or Crusaders that wore the full armor and it just bugged me endlessly that I had almost NO armored Knights with visored helms (or grill helms). Personal gripe, really.

For me it was simply the wrong arrangement at the wrong time.
