This set is looking pretty cool. Well, at least the figures. The set itself seems to be lacking. Ah, well, with new minifig elements, who cares?

My first impression, and still is, "what?? Since when am I buying megabloks?

Seriously, the ad setup and the way the figs are made is just waaay to close to me. it's revolting! Whatever happened to classic lego sets? Why is lego leaning for the megabloks approach when they make good money already?

I'll say I was just happy with the old swords back, but the dwarves...I guess they're all right, but the swords on those goblins...no. Those look to much like megabloks.

I guess I'll have to wait and see.
I ow it to wunztwice for directing me here.

I'm really not digging the new swords. They just look plain silly. But I must say they've struck gold with those dwarf figures. They rock. I hope they continue in this vein and don't take these dwarfs for granite. I'll definintely have to buy at least one ore two of these... I just hope I don't get stonewalled by my jewel of a fiancee at the toy store.

Yeah that’s the image.

In case of any confusion this image is from page 30 of the Official Lego 2007 catalogue not some store catalogue.

There are two questions in my mind about this set including 7029 Skeleton Ship;

1. Did the same Lego team design them both and were they involved as well in the other new castle range they both appear somewhat different in design, they lack the theme coherence of the other sets containing skeletons.

This dwarf mining set seem to contain many unique minifig elements. I know that dwarfs and trolls were in the initial castle poster but the execution of design appears different.

2. Has the design of a castle set at release ever changed substantially after appearing in an official Lego yearly catalogue.

I am personally greatly excited about this set, and not only because of the new figs. Those mine carts are a very nice touch, and I believe the ladders connecting some of the levels are a step up from figs having to fly to the next floor. Something to keep in mind is that we haven't seen the other side, leaving the possibilty for more fun details.

Hmm, I have to say that I throw my lot in with those complaining about the megabloksy look of the new swords and troll. I'm actually ok with the set design because, as others have said, it does resemble mine scafolding. I also like the relationship intimated by the use of similar heraldry on the human and dwarf sheilds: it reminds me of the Alliance/Hoard dynamic from Warcraft. Unfortunately, I'm not initially impressed by the new dwarf helm as it also looks somewhat silly to me (I could be wrong but I think it's one piece, which really limits the helm's usefullness IMO).
It seems that the set also has some kind of trap mechanism, if you look in the top right corner, with the big circular rock. Hmmm...
I believe the wheel you're seeing is lego's attempt at building a winch and pulley system which would be used to raise ore out of the mine.

Overall, It would be a good set with minor modifications and improvements, but personally, I'd rather see some elves.

Yes sir! This lattest set just dwarfs many other attempts with all the introductions of precious additions to the line up of nice parts. Those beards and new helms are mine, hoping of course that those wings are detatchable and/or there are two types. Whatever the case the winged ones could work with vikings as well! (ok that one's pushing it.... ).

Really the design isn't that horrible, and looks to be full of playability, but more importantly decent parts (Mmm-more dk colored cheese slopes). As to the mechanisms/wheel it may just be a rock tumbler/crusher too, with the rock schutes on the other side (for seperating the denser gold from other rock, like out west here in the older days)

Not to be too downbeat, but I think that's probably wildly optimistic! If they are not an integral part of the helmet, I'd say it's most likely they use full size pegs like horns do. On the plus side, this would mean they can be used on Viking helms. Going by the complete absence of plumes in the new Castle knights, despite them having old-style helms with the peg-holes, I'd say the old-style peg connector is gone :(
Possible. I was just noting that upon higher magnification the helms of the dwarfs are definitely not the same as those of the goblins, and that (and I may be out in left field) that the silver helmed dwarf shows a profile that has a little dark hole on it just behind the eyes at the mid-section. That's where the wings seem to connect on the golden helmed and the other silver helmed dwarf with the double-axe. New helm, new wings... I just see more useful dulpication of a mold for cost effectiveness of the set. And as far as the old-style peg connector being gone, that's just not true. The Castle sets released thus far have two different knight helms using it and my daughter's 2007 Hogwarts has feather plumes in it that work in those knight helms. I think they're alive, and from all that I can tell LEGO set designers have learned that we REALLY wanted beards and better helms after what we got teased with in the mock-up Viking sets. These had to be in their tool bins you know, like back in 2003 or 2004.

In summary, the picture is small and blurry, so all things are speculative. But ain't it grand to wonder? In all, this set will wedge perfectly into a MOC mountain as the opening gate to the Dwarf Kingdom below the Steel Mountains. And each additional copy can go further back into the King's halls, one behind the other. I wonder if I should begin laying plans for a fully 9v train track and mine cart system??? 8)

As to what I feel about your question number 1, I have to say it feels more like Norse mythology to me. That would put it more as the successor to the Viking line than in the line of Castle 2007.

And on to number 2; Unless you count what changed so radically from the Toy Fair introduction of the Viking line and then the catalog images that showed up as being an official or "final design". I don't think it happens very often unless new part molds are called for, and become out of budget range.

PSSST!!!

Hey, look behind the second cart on closer magnification and then back to normal scale...

Is that another helm?? The silver one!! Do I see a brownish colored beard under the helm? And a pair of eyes????
And another copper single blade axe held at an angle that means a minifigure might be holding it? That means a total of 5 (five) dwarf minifigures may be defending this mine!!! If that's true, then the value just jumped up a notch.

Drooling,
-Aaron-

I kinda like the troll and other figs. Yet another 'rip off' of what I intended to built, but thats a good thing. If half the people dislike it so much, then that means that I'll likely get it at half price sooner :D While I love the fantasy direction Lego castle is going, I'd like to see some realistic medieval life sets made like most people here. Perhaps there's enough market for both? How about the only thing Megablocky that they change is the retail prices

It seems my dreams come true... almost twenty years later, but they come true. Really Orcs (yes, Orcs aren't real but I mean this green people)! I hope they are sandgreen. If so, I have some additions to my orc army.
The second wish: hopefully the troll can move both arms and hands!

I don't know about the dwarfs, do I like them? Never mind. I like that they have a alliance with the crownies. The helmets I think are one piece, like the batlord helmet.
The other helmets seems to be the Vladek-guy-helmet.

But what the %+*#! a mine needs a catapult?

I must say that I'm really intrigued by this one... Dwarfs, Orcs, New Beards? (Hmm sounds like I'm mini-fig pre-occupied!) Let's hope for new faces and torsos though. C'mon lego, It can't be that hard...

As for the set itself, I think we can forgive lego for not making it an enclosed mine - it sems to be a cross between a mine entrance and the inner workings of the mine (without surrounding rock) - an interesting "play" set. :)

Is anyone else thinking of producing a HUGE MOC with a dwarf mine being attacked by Orcs/Trolls with a castle on top being run by humans oblivious to whats going on beneath them?

I'd love to see some smaller dwarf sets though to build an army... or maybe make the first Lego version of THUD! (Board game played in Terry Pratchett's DiscWord series by dwarfs and trolls in memory of the only battle where both sides ambushed each other...). A Dwarf delecatessen... Hmm may need some more rats from bricklink...

This year (and 2008 by the sound of the Indiana Jones sets) is going to be very expensive. If he 2007 castle range is this good, what do Castle sets do Lego have in store for us next year? (A second human faction even if it's all-out evil would be nice!)
My Other sig is funny. Honest.
