custom axe
Giving up my life as a purist (again ) and I'm a customizer again
I was tired of the soldiers not having a proper medium sized axe, I made one. Looks a bit like a viking or norman axe...

I'm busy on other customs too, like a Roman legionnaire and a knight.

Re: custom axe
Nicely and cleanly done. How long does it take you to make each one?

about 10 minutes i'd say if you want it clean like this. It does look like TTK's work, hadnt seen that yet... where is TTK BTW?footsteps wrote:Nicely and cleanly done. How long does it take you to make each one?

back on topic, you take a halberd (I call it just a big axe), a sharp and easy in your hand knife, a nail sanding... thing (use one with a rough, flat side) and... thats it!
use the knife to cut off the top pin, the upper half of the axe' blade and a piece of the handle (you can choose where). Try to cut it straight by laying it on a table. You now have your rough axe.
Now use the nail sanding thing (:p) and try to get the axe head and the top of the handle running in a straight line. Also get the bottom of the handle straight. Now hold the nail thing diagonal (like this: / ) and softly sand the edges of the handle bottom, top and the blade.
A annoying side effect of the cutting is that there sometimes will be a white spot because the plastic was forced. No problem! You can use a little water on your finger, and rub it on the white spot. Suprisingly, saliva works even better! (I hope you dont need instructions to get it on the axe :p ) Now the white spot camouflages with the colour of the axe.
There you go, a nice clean axe for your minifig to chop in someone's body

It lasts, and you have to wipe it off with something. (mostly my t-shirt :p)Mr. D wrote:Nail sanding thing = file.
That's an interesting tip on using water. Does it last, or do you have to reapply water every so often? Of course, if you make sure to use a very sharp knife and take it eeeeeeasy, stressing the plastic can be avoided.
D-Man
It gives a nice clean look.

It isnt THAT huge... I dont know how to put pics in pixels, so I dont understand what most admins say...Blixen wrote:I like it, especially the smooth and realistic look achieved. It would look better with a yellow fig, though. Oh yeah, and mods or admins will likely remove that picture since it's so huge.
Once you go flesh, you never want to see yellow again

That's such a good job I didn't even notice the fleshie.
While I generally hate modifying parts, in this case if definitely gives it a thoroughly authentic LEGO look. I wish they'd save a little plastic and start making these. Shame that would mean a new mold.

And I made a bunch of these for BrickFest 2004. You put a bit more work into it. I cut the poleaxe down where the upper edge of the blade came back into the handle. Try leaving some of the handles a bit longer and you get the axe the Saxon housecarls or huskarls used.
