castle 10176 and 10176 special edition
What is the difference, (besides the box) between the 10176 castle and the 10176 special edition castle.

I believe the special edition comes with a set of flags and antennas (flag poles).

are they special in anyway? or they just tossed in some extra standard flags. Are they cloth or do they bear a standard picture etc. that is unique?

I don’t think their is any difference besides the box, they both have 12 figures.
I suspect that the special edition box is the last production run box
:
I was sent the 10176 castle (not the special edition box) from SAH to Australia with the flags, the set I purchased was one reduced down to $90.00au so with shipping it cost total $130.00au (114.502 USD)
It seems to me that the 10176 special edition box castle is mostly available from US sellers; I brought one form bricklink at a total with postage to Australia $108.99 USD. (better value then the reduced set from SAH)

Hi folks,
I bought one of these in the UK.
From the top of my head 10176 was the castle. Here in the UK you could order K10176 (just like you can order groups of sets). It cost the same as 10176, but I got the boxed 10176 castle and a loose bag of (Off the top of my head) 25 black flagpoles, 25 red flagpoles, 25 blue 4x1 banner flags and 25 yellow 4x1 banner flags. It was possible to buy the flags set seperate for GBP3.95, I think.

Before Christmas, they were selling the 10176 Special Edition set at Costco stores in the US for $70. I already owned the original, so I did not purchase any of them.

I looked at both boxes last nightwildcatjdh wrote:are they special in anyway? or they just tossed in some extra standard flags. Are they cloth or do they bear a standard picture etc. that is unique?
The special edition box print is copyright 2007
The non special edition box print is copyright 2006
This is a bricklink link to the 2006 box with flags they are additional to the castle box and come in a plastic bag. If you count the minifigs on the box you can see their are 12 also(including skeletons):
http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?S=K10176-1
The peeron/lugnet guides say there are 11minifigures.

Lego's reply
ok I have the official reply from lego
Thank you for contacting us on 01/09/08 and for your interest in our LEGO® products.
The LEGO Group is committed to providing our consumers with the finest possible products and service, so whenever a consumer's expectations are not met in any way, we want to know about it. Even though our original efforts "fell a little short of the mark," we're pleased that you gave us another chance to assist a valued friend.
Set #10176 was a special edition set that recreated the classic Royal Knight's Castle Set #6098 with updated parts and colors however there was only one version released in the United States and one in Europe. The only differences were in the packaging and building instructions. The same elements are in all the versions. Set #6091/6098 was originally released in 2000 and contained 524 pieces but the special edition Set #10176 released in 2000 contained 871 pieces. Additionally, there was a special kit available through LEGO Shop At Home (K10176) which included another bag of extra elements in addition to the King's Castle.

There seem to be random other sets that get a "special edition" or "limited edition" banner on the box in the US but not in Europe. Didn't the '07 City cement mixer have such a banner on the box in the US? The ones here were/are normal City boxes.
My Skeleton Ship Attack did come in a box with a "Limited Edition" banner.
If the image on S@H is true though, there will be a normal banner-free boxes with the Dwarves Mines in my S@H order that I hope arrives tomorrow (no post at the weekend here in Ireland, so I'd have to wait till next week if it doesn't).
