Content management software? PHP?

Post by Jibbajaba »

Hi. I was just wondering if you guys use and kind of CMS to manage the non-forum part of the website. I am trying to learn more about web design so that I can put up a site (not a Lego Castle site), but I don't know very much.

I am talking about the news that gets posted on the front page, moves it's way down, and ends up in the archives. Do you guys do all of that manually (like use a text layer for the news, and then just cut and paste it into archive pages at the end of the month) or do you just have a CMS program doing it all?

Also, is the site written in pure HTML or do you use PHP? (I guess I can just look at the source code for the front page.)

Thanks,

Chris

I'm actually not asking about the forum, but rather about the rest of the site.

The main site started off with everything manually updated. Some things may have been automated in the past few years, but it's not as automated as it should be.

I see. Thanks for the response. I chose to just use Wordpress. I don't know much about customizing php/css driven web sites, but this will be an opportunity to learn.

Wordpress isn't tough if you're sticking with it's built-in functionality. I find it's frustrating to add custom PHP code into a wordpress site though. As such, I prefer to just write sites from scratch using PHP, MySql, XHTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

Of course, if you don't know all that stuff, Wordpress is a good way to get something up quickly.

Joomla is good for basic CMS stuff as well.
Typo3 is the best but not easy to learn because it's very huge and you can do nearly everything with it.
