Blocking Troll content?

Post by Sir Nelson »

Dear CC Admins,

Is there any way to allow CC members to block the forum content of certain other CC members using a setting that applies only to your own account? I am sick of reading the "know-it-all" trolling posts from a certain "know-it-all" who refuses to use proper grammar and spelling, and I would like know if it would be possible for me to be able to skip over those posts at all costs.

Thank you.

Haha. Good call Nelson. That kind of an "ignore" feature would be really appreciated.

They have that feature on some other boards that I visit.

I have no clue over the coding and implementation of it, but it is possible, even with phpbb.

Back to the suggestion itself, it would be something that I too would like to see.

Censorship?

I would have to disagree with having this option of a knee-jerk censorship button (even if it is only for my own viewing). I feel that one's (open) mind makes better judgment calls on what not/to read.

I have to say I don't really like this idea as having certain people 'switched off' because they've said something that annoyed you makes for a rather cold community. If you've got a problem with another member then sort it out with them personally.

Censorship?
A topic similar to this came up on another board on which I post. My take here is the same as there.

"Censorship" would be a button that I could press that would block everyone from reading HWSNBN's post.

"Discernment" would be a button that I could press that would free me from seeing HWSNBN's posts, while allowing others to see, read, and respond if they so pleased.

Having said that, I don't believe such a feature is needed on this board, as that feature already exists.

If anyone is interested in knowing more about how this feature operates, feel free to PM me.

My two cents.

It appears that some have misread my initial post, so I have edited it. I was not calling for censorship in any way, but rather for 'selective browsing' options that would be applicable only to one's own account, and not anyone else's.

Hey Nelson,

If I have to read them, you can too. ;)

More seriously, I'm not sure of the ins and outs of the phpBB system, as that is not my area of the site, but in a threaded forum, wouldn't that make threads kind of confusing? Easier to skim and ignore, IMO.

Personally I hope that something like this doesn't come into fruition. We are a small community, and I suspect that something like this could cause CC to become very splintered.

I know that some threads can become very heated, arousing anger in even the most level headed posters. Heck, I'm almost certain that I have been at the centre of that fire on more than one occasion. I've probably said a number of things that have aggrivated others on the forum, and for that I'm genuinely sorry. Having said that, I'm still a bit apprehensive about a system that allows posters to sensor each other. I sincerely believe that as adults we are more than able to rise to the occasion and move past some of these issues.

I'd just like to add that I believe that the staff here at CC do an excellent job ensuring that posts are for the most part on-topic and respectful of the feelings of other members. Even when things do get out of hand, we have a great bunch of mods who keep things running smoothly.

I play video games and often post on the forums at www.gamefaqs.com. That site does have an ignore feature. I was reluctant to use it for the reasons stated above, but I eventually realized that some people honestly have nothing worthwhile to contribute. Ever.

GameFaqs became much more enjoyable when I turned on the ignore feature. However, this community is MUCH smaller than GameFaqs and even the most unpopular CC members have nothing on some of the GameFaqs users. Trust me, we're lucky with the community we have. I don't think anything needs to change.

I have not yet seen this problem, "in my inbox", but I am sure you guys have valid reasons to bring up this topic. I say go on ahead.

Well it would make topics make less sense if you read them over, I guess it would be easier to just skip the post entirely when you see "username" (I think we all know who we're talking about) posted it. I think the option would create more distance between members though.
In this case, maybe a temporary ban would be better? PM an admin if you have a problem with someone.

I haven't noticed it too much (which is a testament to the quality of the board). Not enough to warrant any kind of major forum overhaul. Though I tend to just skim the posts, unless its a topic I'm really interested in.

Besides, an ignore function wouldn't really help to correct the poster's behavior. It would pretty much allow him to continue making crappy posts unhindered.

A better way may be gentle correcting by respected older members or staff. Though this could be labor intensive and easily get out of hand...

The member in question annoys us all (or at least most of us), but he is selling off his collection so I would imagine that he will drift away in short order. With a community this small, I also agree that an ignore feature would not be a good idea.

I don't think people will start ignoring each other the moment we have such an option. Many people get along really really well here despite their many differences, but I think we should be given the freedom to ignore the people that makes us uncomfortable and lower our desire to contribute to Classic-Castle. ;)
