If it had just fired that bolt, there is no way it could have been reloaded that quickly.

One of your soldiers at the barricade isn't looking at the enemy as he stabs at them

Also the mage's cape is blowing back behind him rather strongly. If the wind was blowing like that, he would have gotten singed a bit.
Dang, Josh, this attention to detail is amazing. I have no idea how you combed through 100 entries at this level of scrutiny, especially when you didn't limit the number of images per entry.

Thank you, Bruce, but its not that difficult actually. I was looking at the entries pretty hard as they came and I kept track of the best. It only got difficult after I'd narrowed it down to the top thirty or so. Then I had to examine the details very closely. Also having a lot of pictures helps in judging these kinds of entries. They tend to be on the large size and I am really picky when it comes to fig posing. So lots of closeup shots helps me see what is going on. The only problem is when the builder doesn't take an overview picture. Its really hard to get an idea of the whole battle when you have piece together a bunch of closeups in your head! :)

Take care,
Josh

Battle at Kaladan`s Hollow

Not bad. The scenery is good, I have a soft spot for snow scenes so that helped you. The problem was the sequence of events and some fig posing issues. The ballistas aren't firing even though a horde of cavalry is attacking, your defending knights are hanging way back out of the fray, your very cool polar bear chariot is way late to the battle. Things seem too spread out. If you had cut down the size of the MOC a bit and got those figs crowded together more, I think this would have been an exceptional MOC.
dell_wood wrote:Just wondering what I can improve on :).
If this is an ambush, where were the bushwhackers hiding? Your fig posing is decent. But the old sequence of events problem got you. It is hard to tell how things got to this place. One of the ambushers (with the arm cut off) is practically facing away from his prey and the angle is incorrect for his arm to be cut off by the guy who is doing it.

You have a decent MOC going there, but two issues jumped out at me. The first is that the Vikings are attacking a Viking village, with an English church in it. That threw me off a bit. The other is that there is still significant fighting going on upon the beach but some Vikings have time to begin loading their plunder all ready. The timing seems to be off.
Tinch wrote:Hello Josh, I would greatly appreciate any advice you have. This was one of my first attempts at this sort of thing, so I'm willing to hear anything and everything.
The landscaping could use some work and the wall is a bit bland. You have a couple of good fig poses (I like the knight doing the backhand with the spear) but the flow doesn't really work for me. Like the attackers carrying the ladder through the garden and over fences. It would be easier and faster to go around.
Kingpeteri wrote:Please comment.
The problem with all your entries is that I stated in the rules that I didn't want progressive shots of the battle. "One scene, frozen in time" is what they say. So they were disqualified right off the get go.
paleotaur wrote:Comments if you don't mind sir judge. :)
This one was interesting. The Lizardmen idea appealed to me and your landscaping was pretty good. My main issue with it was how close the Lizardmen where and hadn't attacked yet or been seen (except by the one guy, of course). It just didn't seem plausible.
Jansen wrote:Could you put your two cents in concerning my entries, please? Criticize away!
Over the edge was a fun entry and your landscaping is quite good. I just think that the assassin and the forestmen would have done something by now. After all, there are a lot of guys in the water already. This has been going on for some time.

Your siege is okay. The landscaping is rather uninspired, especially after seeing what you could do in Over the Edge. The castle itself is rather bland. Regarding the battle, I think your cavalry would have been outside fighting already. There isn't really that many attackers. And the attackers have a magic floating ladder... ;)

Paddlewack Fields:
I like that this is a small crowded scene and the buried skeleton is a nice touch. However, too many figs are fighting with their feet firmly planted on the ground.

Thanatos:
Again, too many figs aren't moving. Both feet stuck to the ground. I did like the guy throwing rocks! :)
man at ye old well wrote:Hey, Congrats to the winners! I thought I did pretty good with my entries, so what do I need to differently with my entries next year? :?
Try to work on your sequence of events. Think "what happened prior to this scene? How did each of these figs get to where they are right now?" Some of your figs are not in very plausible locations, based on their starting points. Also I think that fisherman would have hightailed when the skeleton ship pulled in...well before the kraken got him. Lastly, all your crownies look like they are falling backwards or slipping on something. They don't really look like they are running.
The dark tide wrote:I wish to throw mine onto the pile as well. Josh you are such an addition to this community, I don't know what we would do without you. Thank you SO much for throwing this contest.
Thanks! Your landscaping is very good. I especially liked the rock outcropping on the right hand side. You have a good pitched battle there in the middle but the figs heading into the battle don't seem like they are in a hurry. Not much sense of urgency. They got the stroll thing going on.
Elephant Knight wrote:Hey josh,

I will comment on all seven but will be brief, okay?

Crown Fortress:
Good sized battle, but way too many figs are just standing there, not moving or doing anything.

Chess:
Interesting idea, pretty original. But again, too many figs just standing there. Especially the baby blue guys.

Crown Battle:
Didn't seem plausible. Obviously there was fighting on the near side of the river as there are dead crownies rather hacked up. The crownies pushed the enemy back across the river, but there are no dead enemies. Seems rather odd to me.

Final Battle:
You have cavalry leading, being backed up by infantry. Its usually the other way around. The one classic guy outside struck me as odd.

FFF:
The forestman looks like he is just hanging there, not climbing.

The Bridge:
I like the bridge itself. The pileup has me confused. I couldn't figure out how it got that way. There is no plausible way for those people to be like that. The dead would be spread out along the bridge more, I believe.

The Armory:
This was your best entry. I really liked how the assassin is posed, looking around the corner. The problem is that the dead "scribe"(?) was killed with a sword. That doesn't make for a quiet death. The knight would have heard.

Hope this is helpful!
Josh

PS. Thomas, I will get to yours. Its late and I'm tired. :)
