Is there any news as to a US version (English)?

It's times like these I wish I was able to speak Russian.

Looks like the quality is decent enough although there haven't been very many Russian films making it "big time" in the US for that matter. Too bad. This looks good enough to go see. I guess Russia has been caught up in the Breaveheart-Gladiator-Troy-300 craze.

I didn't really think the fight scene was that great. The fighting style of the smaller group was too Hollywood for me. I would like to see the whole thing though.

There are other Russian made movies that has some medieval fighting in it, and goes beyond "Hollywood" style. Recent examples include:

Nochnoi Dozor (Night Watch)
Dnevnoi Dozor (Day Watch)


Both these films had limited release in the US and are available in DVD. Although both films are in the modern era and fantasy, they do have "flashbacks" into the history of the Light Others -vs- Dark Others. The first one deals with medieval armies for Light and Dark, and the second deals with Tamerlane, complete with Tengu warriors.

Sumerechniy Dozor (Twilight Watch) comes out on 2009.

I'll have to ask my bestfriend if she knows anymore Russian (modern) films with battle scenes.

This looks pretty good, and if possible I will see it, though there has got to be a better way of distroying a peasent cavelry devision than sacrifising your best troops.

Great news... I found through MySpace, that Mongol is considered one of the best foriegn made films and will be released in US theaters JUNE 6th!!!

Why restrict yourself to modern when a Russian film features on the best battle scenes in the history of early film?

If I choose to restrict myself to a particular genre, culture, food, music, type of women, or whatever its because its my choice to do so. The same way you have LEGO Fans who like Castle only.

Anyhow, Im busy trying to collect movies from ALL cultures with battle scenes. I also lean towards the more modern ones, as some of the older films tend to be rather... Campy. Like "The 300 Spartans" (1962), or "Cleopatra" (1963).

That's certainly you're right to do so, but if you're willing to expand your horizons a bit, you may find you enjoy the experience. While I, too, find myself focuses on certainly genres and themes (I've been on a Hammer Horror kick lately), but it's sometimes worthwhile to try something different if you think it might have some value.

Well, those two are probably some of the weakest in the "sand and sandals" epics that were the rage in the 60s. You've said elsewhere you liked the Bronston epics (El Cid and Fall of the Roman Empire), and those are of the same time period.

Here's what I'd recommend in terms of great international and domestic films that also feature some good, epic action (of the non-firearm variety):

The Seven Samurai
Ran
The Emperor and the Assassin
Kingdom of Heaven: The Director's Cut
Spartacus
Zulu (bit of a cheat, but a great juxtaposition of the modern and old)
Die Nibelungen (Lang)
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Fire and Ice (Bakshi animated film)
Lawrence of Arabia
Henry V or Richard III (Olivier)
Henry V (Branagh)
Krzyzacy

I think you'll like any of those. Enjoy!

I already have half of the movies in that list.

Anyway, it seems that MONGOL for now has a limited release.

I have to go all the way to East Village along East Houston Street (between 1st and 2nd Ave) in Manhattan just to see it. But hey, I get to enjoy some awesome dining after the movie.
