End of the Road for Sir Gerrod - My first post-dark-ages MOC

Post by sjarvis »

First, thanks for all the great MOCs and discussions here! I found this place in March after coming out of my dark ages thanks to two things (a) needing to get my 5-year-old a birthday present in March and (b) a business trip that took me to Minneapolis and (c) my iPhone dying on that trip, necessitating a trip to the Apple Store at the Mall of America, which just happens to be right across the hall from the LEGO Store. And the rest is history!

Unfortunately, I just had time for a quick browse and to buy a couple of sets for the Boy for his birthday, but we're BOTH hooked now.

I hadn't built any LEGO seriously since the early 80s when I had a number of Classic Space sets (all long gone now, I fear).

But, we really love the new Castle sets (and BrickLink, or CrackLink, as I like to call it now!), and my first real MOC is Castle-themed:

Any and all constructive criticism is welcomed.

Thanks!

I like it. :)

It's minimal in it's color selection and that helps give it that forlorn feeling.

One suggestion I would make is have the bad guy walking away but I like it either way.

Welcome to CC! I am glad to see another AFOL, it's always interesting to read the different stories we each have to tell.

Anyways, not a bad start for a first MOC, I like the snow-covered hill.

Hey Steven,

Welcome back to the hobby and welcome to CC! I like the landscaping (snowscaping?) in this - you avoid the problem of most new builders who tend to have too many straight lines so everything looks artificial. I like the way you cap the flower stems with 1x1 round plates so it looks more like three little weeds poking out through the snow.

Hello! Welcome to the CC!

I must second everything Bruce has said--the landscaping here is excellent! Though if you built in a trail of footprints behind Sir Gerrod, I would love it even more!

Just one photographic tip: pictures taken from the corner of the MOC usually do the best job of showing most of the major elements of the scene and how they relate to each other.

Thanks! and thanks for the walking away suggestion. I thought about that, but the intent was that the dark knight had finally caught up to Gerrod after wounding him and tracking him through the snow, with Gerrod still feebly crawling away. I didn't get enough of that motion in the placement of the crown knight fig.

Thanks! I intended to put tracks, but I discovered I didn't have any 1x1 white tiles. I thought I had ordered some from BL, but I didn't.

Thanks for the tip. I know I need to work on my photographin' skills. This is the first time I've photographed LEGO like this, and it's a LOT more challenging than it looks!

Thanks to everyone for the feedback and the welcome!

Good job, simple but cool, probably, as already said, the bad guy should go away or going toward the dead.

Great job! For a beginner, it looks great. As Munchy said, it does give a forlorn feeling. Keep up the good work!

I like this MOC for a few reasons already mentioned, but for two cents, here they are. I like winter MOCs in general. Even though I live in a frying pan I do vaction for winter where there is lots of snow. The second thing is the "uneven lines" for the snow drifts and the flower stems are very cool. I hope that I can remember to use them (if you don't mind me borrowing the idea). This has plenty of story ideas that could be developed from it. Nice Job!
