My first(ish) serious castle moc - orc seige tower

Post by miniflea84 »

After several aborted and overambitious attempts, I've got something I can call finished. Some pics:

A few of you may recognize this- I had it at brickfair. Just now managed to put it back together, the car ride home was bumpy. Fig placement is a bit different, but I've tried to make it as close as possible.

Comments, criticisms, anything, very welcome.

I appreciated the scale of this in particular. The siege tower could have used a little work (the sides were a funny version of BGWS, except brown), but the wall and the cross-section of the battle was great.

A note on architecture: usually castle walls that were higher than about 20 feet or so had switchback stairs or spiral staircases rather than straight stairs. They were easier to defend because you could get into a position where your enemy had their strong-side sword arm (or spear arm, etc.) against the wall and you had yours free to bash them coming down from the opposite direction. I suppose the same would be true of a straight staircase to a lesser extent, but I think the curves were of themselves defensive.

Then again, they didn't have to face troll hordes either...

The siege tower reminds me entirely of those seen in the Return of the King, only much more clean/ defensive. Keep it up!

Granted, the stairs were often switchbacks, but I see nothing wrong with a BGW (or variation thereof) when its purpose is to protect troops from defender's projectile weapons such as arrows. But then again, how many MOCs have I posted? zero. Shutting mouth now. :D

For me the thing that stands out about this MOC is the height of the walls. It would be interesting if you maintained that height for the rest of the castle.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Yeah, the tower is kind of simple, and the wall is high, but thats what happens when you start building with more of a general idea than a specific plan. Don't get me wrong, I still love how it turned out. The stairs are a bit too steep for my taste too, and maybe next time I'll try doing the switchback thing.

Muskey15, during the public hours of brickfair, one of the most common comments I got was "oh, look, lord of the rings". Whats funny is that I didn't consciously set out to build a LOTR moc, I just knew I wanted something with orcs attacking a wall. I am a huge huge huge fan though, and maybe in the back of my mind that kind of influenced the design.

Personally I think the BGWS has been exagerated.
Here's a new's flash: Real castles do happen to have Big gray walls :)
Masons did not try to nit-pick off-collor rocks to make their castles look good. Medieval castles *should* have BGW IMHO.

I like this MOC. I am not bothered byt the BGW in brown of the tower...
Maybe that's why I'm a newbie or maybe bringing some fresh perspective.

It just gets under my skin when the first thing people say is OMG BGW!!

Very good! Just pull up a Grond and you'll really have something going!
My only complaint is that the stairs look kinda awkward, being that steep and that high, but besides that I really like it!

Wow thats big. Really, really big. The scene itself look nice. You get a feel for it. Needs more archers and some burning hot water or burning hay and rocks to be thrown at the attackers :D

Nice stuff.
