Suggestions to the CCCVI - for admins

Post by Michal H./gearcs »

Hi, all! Last year I joined the CCCV as a beginning builder and this year, when CCCVI aproaches, I have some ideas. First, the photos size - it is limited to 800x600 px, but no limitation in size. I found, that many details can't be captured on the small photo, but you have only three contest pictures... I know, the work of judge in this contest is very difficult, so many pictures... But wouldn't be better the photo size 1024x768? The size isn't too big to be used. Whole photo is visible without rolling and moving, the details are better visible. Second, I suggest the size limitation to make this work for admins easier. E.g. 300 - 400 kb, this size is tolerable, isn't it? It helps with browsing photos and absolutely with watching the details. What do you think about it?

without rolling or moving - that is irrelevant as it is dependant on the screen resolution.

as for the rest of it no ideaas Im not a mod, just felt I would point that last bit out :)
If you are reading this it means I have posted! - congratulate your find and remember this day

I think it's not irrelevant, not for judges. Try to think, what will the situation be, if you're the judge. Hundreds of pictures and every picture moving...uhhhh
Has someone today the screen resolution so small? Maybe, but I think, it's minority of pc users. That's why I think photos are better transparent;)

The admins will discuss this option and get back to you. In my opinion as a judge, 800x600 has been adequate for grading purposes. Enforcing image file sizes would be yet another duty for the admins.

Please keep in mind that the size limits are only in place for the folder with contest images. You are more than welcome to post a link in the forum to another folder with additional images and larger images.

Thanks, Ben. The reason, why i wrote it, was that I try to build a large creation and make all the details, which isnť on 800x600 so good visible and can't be all included in three photos. So I will create another folder with more photos and hope that it will be recognized.

Given this is related to the contests/competitions, I have a question...

What if Classic Castle had a forum section solely for contests and CC group activities? Limit thread creation to moderators so that sanctioned activities are posted, as well as notification and links to external competitions.

This would clear up some of the clutter which comes from having too many pinned topics and multiple threads per contest.

Hey,

On Michal's original question, after judging a whole lot of contests, I think that 600x800 pics are pretty reasonable. The issue you raise only really comes in with MOCs that are huge layouts, like a whole village, and those are generally not a huge factor as they don't fit the contest categories. In general I'd rather see a smaller thing built really well than a huge layout built less well. When there is a big layout, I'd suggest taking one overall pic to show the scope of the MOC, then a couple more close-up, maybe at the figs-eye-view level, to show some of the details.

As to file size, I don't want another thing to police. The thing you need to reallize about running a contest is that you spend 90% of the time on the very worst creations, as it is usually the least experienced builders who also don't know how to read the rules about number of images, image size, etc, and so you go back and forth sending them messages to fix their submissions. The people who take the time to build and photograph well also take the time to read the directions (in general).

On PP's suggestion, we'll talk about it, but I think the current forum structure is okay. I try to be pretty good about pruning stickied threads - there are usually only a couple at a time. Discussion of entries belongs in Castle MOCs anyway, so the only things that would go in a hypothetical contests forum would be two threads per contest - one for announcement of the contest and questions about the rules (and general griping about the unfairness of the rules), and a second for the actual entries. Since we only run a half-dozen contests a year, counting the semi-un-official ones (e.g. battles and mini), it wouldn't be a very well populated forum.

My sugestions:
1) Is it possible to extend the duration of the competition? For 2 months for example, or 6 weeks at least? One month is too short (not only for me).
2) Is there posibility to use custom weapons in all categories (for example Brickforge`s khopesh would be great in any butcher shop :D ) ?

The CCC has always been a two month long contest.
