Night Lords castle last night. This isn't a review or anything so I do I didn't feel it should go in that thread.

I am more bamboozled on what to do with this set, it really looks inferior next to my King's castle siege and my Black Monarchs castle. I guess I could use it in correlation with the Evil Wizards Tower. Or the Manor of the Undead...hmmmm

it is more a manor house than a castle.

that being said, it is unique and kind anifty i think. I like this thing!

This series came out when I was in my dark age so I have little experience with them. All the large fright knight sets looked.... odd to me but from what my younger brother said, who had several, he found them very fun to play with.

I wish I had got some of the smaller sets though. The minifigs for the lesser soldiers and such are very nice and generic. The small set designs are fairly good as well, I love the flamethrower cart and crossbow cart.

funny, you're the first person I've ever met who has ever said that.

Night lords castle seems a bit strange to me. Its too detailed and it looks like the slightest tap will bring it crashing down (note: this is something to avoid if building a castle).

I agree, the minifigs are cool...I don't much about them, but I have seen them.

I was never a very big fan of the Night Lords series. I bought one or two of the larger sets for the assortment of darker bricks, but otherwise the structures themselves were not incredibly appealing to me. Also, the figures of the series were nothing too special. All in all, the sets were decent for extra bricks to create MOCs...

They were cheap and evil; the formula for buying mass quantities. At the time they were first released I was not as enthusiastic as I had been for the Royal Knights, Dark Forest or the Dragon Masters, but I did get a few. After the theme ended and was mostly replaced by the Ninja theme, they began to pop up everywhere at very affordable prices, so I did begin to like them a lot more as they were easy to army-build. Some of their parts were odd, like the lower element of the Witch's Windship, that hidden wall element at the top of the Night Lord's Castle and some other assorted pieces, but they did have a lot of design elements that I like very much (the arched window pane, the bat, the dark gray bits). I still think however that the Witch's Magic Manor was a horrid set design given the name, and if LEGO had billed it as the Stone Circle Ruins or something vaguely Stonehenge-like it would have been more exciting. Overall, the Night Lord's Castle was great, especially after KB Toys began getting them in cases of 10 at $39.99 each!!! I wish I had pictures of the expanded Night Lord's Castle I made from 4 complete sets.

OK, I often wonder if people would dislike all of the Fright Knights figures solely because they dislike the Batlord's ridiculous batcap or Willa the Witch's toothless grin.

Let's see what we got there (pics = links):

Image
The batcap is quite cartoonish, but other than that the torso might be useful.

Image
Willa's sideburns... Her one-tooth-grin... I understand why people don't be too fond of her. But then again you get a female black dress or at the least a black 60 degree rooftile. And don't forget the black wizard's hat.

Image
A goatie and eyebrows. Still useful. I personally don't like that style of helmet too much, especially its rear, but it definitely has its use. The breastplate looks kind of bib-ish to me, but at least it's a generic torso.

Image
I really like this fig, mainly the torso, but also the face. It's hard to tell if the red markings on the torso are meant to be a stylised bat or a fleurs-de-lis design. Either way. It's a generic soldier.

Image
You may either play Connect Four on this torso or accept it for kind of chain mail. I prefer the latter. And it comes in a somewhat rare colour, especially for its time, when dark grey was an unusual colour except for burps. And it's still good for generic soldiers.

All in all I don't dislike the Fright Knights figs too much anymore. Admittedly I used to, when I was all for Black Falcons.

Jojo,

I love those helmets.... though I agree Black Falcon is by far the best faction!

I thought Fright Knights was a fair theme. Certainly not worthy of the harsh feelings towards it. The sets were less than expertly designed (though I do like the tower), but the figures were good. I even like Willa and the Batlord.

To partially revise my post, I would say that certain figures from the fright knight line were nothing to special. The basic soldiers from the line were rather generic and as such rather useful for army building. One or two of them would have been great to have in bulk. However, the building designs did not interest me, and the bat lord figure (mostly his helmet, plus not exceptionally fond of his torso) was not appealing to me at all. I have a feeling that if I was more aware of the massive discounts on the sets when they were still around, I would have most likely tried to buy more...
