I'm looking to expand my herd after buying the Medieval Market Village I think. LEGO is so naughty for making their own bovines and then plunking them two by two in sets costing $100 (USD), and without a bull in sight. I like them, but I'm leaning away to the fan-product simply because those udders are awfully obvious. I don't mind having many ladies in the field, but it sure would be NICE if LEGO could get out a decent $30 farm field set for either the brown or black & white herd, pop in at least two more ladies, one bull, a well, some fences and a modern or Castle farmer with a pitchfork & hay bales.
What do you think about these cows? Those fan-products sure look mighty impressive with removable (?!?) udders. Would you hit up this Toys R Us sale (buy 1, get 1 50% off) just for blk & whts, or go with something else? I'm sort of open to non-LEGO as long as they are seamlessly blended into my creations, but I would rather go pure. The trouble with purity is that it took about 30 years to get the official beef, but still not enough bull, from LEGO.
Almost enough to make me a fan of brick-built animals permanently. And yet there are those cows in the Farm and Market sets...
Quite the eNiGmA, is it not?

Being in posession of the Brickforge animals, I have to say they're top notch. But the LEGO official cows have grown on me, too. I think they both have their place.
Why not order a few animals from Brickforge to try? If you don't like them, you can always trade them later.

Re: Your Opinion of LEGO offical cows
I have both types of cows. I happen to be partial to the LEGO cow.
Price wise, good luck trying to form of either type. I have been building my own herd. I now have 4 brown and 5 black and white.
The LEGO cow is a bit more cartoonish than the brickforge cow. The gap in where the 1x2 goes is very noticeable. But I still like this cow better. That is just my opinion. You can find the cows on bricklink between $7-$10 each.
I actually think LEGO did a wise thing in placing them in expensive sets...sold more sets now didn't they? Good business sense.

I actually like the BF cows better, but since they're not official parts, I think I'm going to opt for the official Lego ones. I agree we need some more options to acquire them. I'm thinking about picking up a second MMV, anyone want to trade two brown for two holstein?

Official cows are nice. I'm glad to have them. The BF ones are more in line with the classic Lego ideals IMO. If Lego were to offer the official ones at a better price, then either option is a win. The only real loss here is the fact that the official ones were so late to make an apperance. Try both, you can't go wrong.
