There is something I noticed soon after the forum was upgraded, but it's taken til now for me to muster up the energy to mention it (I'm a lazy old sod).
Previously, when I would browse into the forum section, the subsections that contained posts that I hadn't read since the last time I'd been there had the little red/white shield icon to alert me. Within the subforums (subforae?), a similar icon highlighted threads with new (since last visit) posts. Conveniently, when I would come back the next day (or so), only those forums (forae?) and threads that had new activity since my last visit would be similarly icon-ed.
Now, it seems that in order for only new activity to be highlighted on my next visit, I either have to have read every new thread the last time, or remember to have clicked the little "Mark Forums Read" thingy before I left the last time. Otherwise, everything starts to be marked as "new activity", no matter how old.
I've poked around the User Control Panel to see if there is a switch to flick in order to make this function automatic, but I have thus far failed to find it - if it exists.
I rather enjoyed the automatic "mark as read" function. Having to remember to manually click the thingy with each visit is slightly more annoying than overseeing gong farmers.
Is there any respite available for an aromatically challenged, lazy old sod?

Second declension neuter: s. forum, pl. fora (of course speaking of within the subfora would in Latin mean that it should be declined in ablative, giving the form subforis but let's not get over the top here...)footsteps wrote:Within the subforums (subforae?), a similar icon highlighted threads with new (since last visit) posts. As for your actual question I've also found it mildy annoying but I don't know what to do about it...

Someone (I think it was Sava) told me that the feature you're referring to was a glitch in the old forum programming and there was no way to replicate it in the new.
Which is a real pity, since I liked it too.

Re: Technical question - Mark Forums Read
I'm actually happy with this the way it is. The old way, occasionally when I logged off it would suddenly mark all forums as read. Since I pop in and out of the forums throughout the day, it's not like I read every thread when I'm here, so it was always annoying to have to try to go back and figure out which things had new content that I hadn't seen. Especially annoying from the standpoint of moderating, I suppose, since I do try to at least peek at the active threads.
